The Multi-Blade Boron-10-based neutron detector performance using a focusing reflectometer

The Multi-Blade is a Boron-10-based neutron detector designed for neutron reflectometers and developed for the two instruments (Estia and FREIA) planned for the European Spallation Source in Sweden. A reflectometry demonstrator has been installed at the AMOR reflectometer at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI - Switzerland). The setup exploits the Selene guide concept and it can be considered a scaled-down demonstrator of Estia. The results of these tests are discussed. It will be shown how the characteristics of the Multi-Blade detector are features that allow the focusing reflectometry operation mode. Additionally the performance of the Multi-Blade, in terms of rate capability, exceeds current state-of-the-art technology. The improvements with respect to the previous prototypes are also highlighted; from background considerations to the linear and angular uniformity response of the detector.

Effects of Strain and Buffer Layer on Interfacial Magnetization in Sr$_2$CrReO$_6$ Films Determined by Polarized Neutron Reflectometry

We have determined the depth-resolved magnetization structures of a series of highly ordered Sr$_{2}$CrReO$_{6}$ (SCRO) ferrimagnetic epitaxial films via combined studies of x-ray reflectometry, polarized neutron reflectometry and SQUID magnetometry. The SCRO films deposited directly on (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ or SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates show reduced magnetization of similar width near the interfaces with the substrates, despite having different degrees of strain. When the SCRO film is deposited on a Sr$_{2}$CrNbO$_{6}$ (SCNO) double perovskite buffer layer, the width the interfacial region with reduced magnetization is reduced, agreeing with an improved Cr/Re ordering. However, the relative reduction of the magnetization averaged over the interfacial regions are comparable among the three samples. Interestingly, we found that the magnetization suppression region is wider than the Cr/Re antisite disorder region at the interface between SCRO and SCNO.

Synthetic magnetoelectric coupling in a nanocomposite multiferroic

Given the paucity of single phase multiferroic materials (with large ferromagnetic moment), composite systems seem an attractive solution in the quest to realize magnetoelectric cou-pling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Despite having antiferro-magnetic order, BiFeO3 (BFO) has nevertheless been a key material in this quest due to excel-lent ferroelectric properties at room temperature. We studied a superlattice composed of 8 repetitions of 6 unit cells of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) grown on 5 unit cells of BFO. Significant net uncompensated magnetization in BFO is demonstrated using polarized neutron reflectometry in an insulating superlattice. Remarkably, the magnetization enables magnetic field to change the dielectric properties of the superlattice, which we cite as an example of synthetic magnetoelectric coupling. Importantly, this controlled creation of magnetic moment in BFO suggests a much needed path forward for the design and implementation of integrated oxide devices for next generation magnetoelectric data storage platforms.
