Observation of a cubic Rashba effect in the surface spin structure of rare-earth ternary materials

Spin-orbit interaction and structure inversion asymmetry in combination with magnetic ordering is a promising route to novel materials with highly mobile spin-polarized carriers at the surface. Spin-resolved measurements of the photoemission current from the Si-terminated surface of the antiferromagnet TbRh2Si2 and their analysis within an ab initio one-step theory unveil an unusual triple winding of the electron spin along the fourfold-symmetric constant energy contours of the surface states. A two-band k.p model is presented that yields the triple winding as a cubic Rashba effect. The curious in-plane spin-momentum locking is remarkably robust and remains intact across a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in spite of spin-orbit interaction on Rh atoms being considerably weaker than the out-of-plane exchange field due to the Tb 4f moments.

Inconsistency of the photoemission spectrum with the spectral function in Kondo systems

Kondo effect is an example of asymptotic freedom where the antiferromagnetic coupling between a localized magnetic moment and valence electrons, increases with reducing temperature. The electronic spectral function for such a system predicts a narrow Kondo resonance close to Fermi energy below its Kondo temperature 'TK'. The internal energy level structure of the localized magnetic moment introduces sidebands near the Kondo resonance, each with its respective Kondo temperature increasing as the sideband position moves towards higher binding energies. Consequently, the temperature dependence of the resonance features becomes weaker as we go towards higher binding energies. Here, we show a Ce4f photoemission spectral evolution obtained from a prototypical Kondo system CeAl2, departing from the predictions of the spectral function. Our measurements reveal a uniform temperature dependence for all the well screened Ce4f photoemission features (4f1 final state), which are usually interpreted as resonance features, as we reduce the temperature suggesting that the resonance interpretation for the 4f1 final state features is not appropriate. Instead, the spectral evolution is explained simply by the temperature dependence of the strength of the coupling between Ce4f and valence electrons, which remains uniform over the range of 4f1 final state features. As a possible explanation to the observed spectral evolution, we propose the phenomenon of collapse of the Kondo singlet wave function upon photoelectron kinetic energy measurement, analogous to the wave function collapse observed upon measurements performed on an entangled EPR (Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen) pair. Our proposal highlights how experiments studying single particle properties, when performed on a quantum system, give incomplete information about the many-body physics of the system.

Interplay of Dirac fermions and heavy quasiparticles in solids

Many-body interactions in crystalline solids can be conveniently described in terms of quasiparticles with strongly renormalized masses as compared to those of non-interacting particles. Examples of extreme mass renormalization are on the one hand graphene, where the charge carriers obey the linear dispersion relation of massless Dirac fermions, and on the other hand heavy-fermion materials where the effective electron mass approaches the mass of a proton. Here we show that both extremes, Dirac fermions like they are found in graphene and extremely-heavy quasiparticles characteristic for Kondo materials, may not only coexist in a solid but can undergo strong mutual interactions. Using the example of EuRh2Si2 we explicitly demonstrate that these interactions can take place at the surface and in the bulk. The presence of the linear dispersion is imposed solely by the crystal symmetry while the existence of heavy quasiparticles is caused by the localized nature of the 4f states.

Structural and electronic properties of the graphene/Al/Ni(111) intercalation-like system

Decoupling of the graphene layer from the ferromagnetic substrate via intercalation of sp metal has recently been proposed as an effective way to realize single-layer graphene-based spin-filter. Here, the structural and electronic properties of the prototype system, graphene/Al/Ni(111), are investigated via combination of electron diffraction and spectroscopic methods. These studies are accompanied by state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. The properties of this prospective Al-intercalation-like system and its possible implementations in future graphene-based devices are discussed.
