Evolution of localized pulses in the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries equation theory

In this work, we develop, in the Gurevich-Pitaevskii framework, an analytic theory for the evolution of localized pulses in the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries equation theory for situations when a dispersive shock does not eventually transform into a sequence of well-separated solitons. We found solutions to the Whitham modulation equations for the corresponding so-called "quasi-simple" dispersive shock waves and illustrated this solution with concrete examples of an initial pulse. Comparison of the analytical solution with direct numerical simulations showed that the modulation theory provides a very accurate description of the wave pattern even at one wavelength scale.

Supersonic Flow Past an Obstacle in a Quasi-Two-Dimensional Lee-Huang-Yang Quantum Fluid

A supersonic flow past an obstacle can generate a rich variety of wave excitations. This paper investigates, both analytically and numerically, two types of excitations generated by the flow of a Lee-Huang-Yang quantum fluid past an obstacle: linear radiation and oblique dark solitons. We show that wave crests of linear radiation can be accurately described by the proper modification of the Kelvin original theory, while the oblique dark soliton solution is obtained analytically by transformation of the 1D soliton solution to the obstacle's reference frame. A comparison between analytical predictions and numerical simulations demonstrates good agreement, validating our theoretical approach.

Mass-imbalanced Bose-Einstein condensed mixtures in rotating perturbed trap

We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium ($^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the linear perturbed regime, the radial phase separation that occurs in the immiscible condition splits up with the two densities having their maxima at distinct positions. In the rotating regime of both unperturbed and perturbed cases, the minimum rotation is determined in terms of the inter-species interaction to observe vortex structures. In the immiscible regime a dramatic spatial interchange between the species is verified by increasing the rotation.

Tunable spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in deep optical lattices and subjected to equal contributions of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC), are investigated in the presence of a periodic time modulation of the Zeeman field. SOC tunability is explicitly demonstrated by adopting a mean-field tight-binding model for the BEC mixture and by performing an averaging approach in the strong modulation limit. In this case, the system can be reduced to an unmodulated vector discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a rescaled SOC tunning parameter $α$, which depends only on the ratio between amplitude and frequency of the applied Zeeman field. The dependence of the spectrum of the linear system on $α$ has been analytically characterized. In particular, we show that extremal curves (ground and highest excited states) of the linear spectrum are continuous piecewise functions (together with their derivatives) of $α$, which consist of a finite number of decreasing band lobes joined by constant lines. This structure also remains in presence of not too large nonlinearities. Most important, the interactions introduce a number of localized states in the band-gaps that undergo change of properties as they collide with band lobes. The stability of ground states in the presence of the modulating field has been demonstrated by real time evolutions of the original (un-averaged) system. Localization properties of the ground state induced by the SOC tuning, and a parameter design for possible experimental observation have also been discussed.

Stable multiple vortices in collisionally inhomogeneous attractive Bose-Einstein condensates

We study stability of solitary vortices in the two-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a spatially localized region of self-attraction. Solving the respective Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and running direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that vortices with topological charge up to S = 6 (at least) are stable above a critical value of the chemical potential (i.e., below a critical number of atoms, which sharply increases with S). The largest nonlinearity-localization radius admitting the stabilization of the higher-order vortices is estimated analytically and accurately identified in a numerical form. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a setting which gives rise to stable higher-order vortices, S > 1, in a trapped self-attractive BEC. The same setting may be realized in nonlinear optics too.

Bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with field-induced dipole moments

We introduce an effectively one-dimensional (1D) model of a bosonic gas of particles carrying collinear dipole moments which are induced by an external polarizing field with the strength periodically modulated along the coordinate, which gives rise to an effective nonlocal nonlinear lattice in the condensate. The existence, shape and stability of bright solitons, appearing in this model, are investigated by means of the variational approximation and numerical methods. The mobility of solitons and interactions between them are studied too.

Twisted Phonons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider elementary excitations in a Bose Einstein condensate, carrying a finite amount of angular momentum. We show that these elementary excitations are modified Bogoliubov oscillations, or phonons with an helical wave structure. These twisted phonon modes can contribute to the total vorticity in a quantum fluid, thus complementing the contribution of the traditional quantum vortices. Linear and nonlinear versions of twisted phonon modes will be discussed. New envelope soliton solutions are shown to exist in a condensate.

Hirota method for oblique solitons in two-dimensional supersonic nonlinear Schroedinger flow

In a previous work[1] exact stable oblique soliton solutions were revealed in two dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger flow. In this work we show that single soliton solution can be expressed within the Hirota bilinear formalism. An attempt to build two-soliton solutions shows that the system is "close" to integrability provided that the angle between the solitons is small and/or we are in the hypersonic limit.

Interaction of oblique dark solitons in two-dimensional supersonic nonlinear Schrödinger flow

We investigate the collision of two oblique dark solitons in the two dimensional supersonic nonlinear Schrödinger flow past two impenetrable obstacles. We numerically show that this collision is very similar to the dark soliton collisions in the one dimensional case. We observe that it is practically elastic and we measure the shifts of the solitons positions after their interaction.

Matter-wave 2D solitons in crossed linear and nonlinear optical lattices

It is demonstrated the existence of multidimensional matter-wave solitons in a crossed optical lattice (OL) with linear OL in the $x-$direction and nonlinear OL (NOL) in the $y-$direction, where the NOL can be generated by a periodic spatial modulation of the scattering length using an optically induced Feshbach resonance. In particular, we show that such crossed linear and nonlinear OL allows to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against decay or collapse for both attractive and repulsive interactions. The solutions for the soliton stability are investigated analytically, by using a multi-Gaussian variational approach (VA), with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) necessary criterion for stability; and numerically, by using the relaxation method and direct numerical time integrations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Very good agreement of the results corresponding to both treatments is observed.

Spin-1/2 fermions with attractive interaction in an optical lattice

We study attractive fermions in an optical lattice superimposed by a trapping potential, such that fermions may form bosonic molecules. We map the model onto nonlinear field equations depending on the Nambu-Gor'kov propagator. The resulting field equations where solved numerically by a relaxation technique that allowed us to calculate the inhomogeneous densities of fermions and condensed molecules at zero temperature. When the interactions between fermions are strong there is a competition between unbound fermions and bound molecules leading to an unexpected reduction of the non-homogeneous density of fermions at the center of the trap.

Two-dimensional expansion of a condensed dense Bose gas

We study the expansion dynamics of a condensate in a strongly interacting Bose gas in the presence of an obstacle. Our focus is on the generation of shock waves after the Bose gas has passed the obstacle. The strongly interacting Bose gas is described in the slave-boson representation. A saddle-point approximation provides a nonlinear equation of motion for the macroscopic wave function, analogous to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of a weakly interacting Bose gas but with different nonlinearity. We compare the results with the Gross-Pitaevskii dynamics of a weakly interacting Bose gas and find a similar behavior with a slower behavior of the strongly interacting system.

Two-dimensional supersonic nonlinear Schrödinger flow past an extended obstacle

Supersonic flow of a superfluid past a slender impenetrable macroscopic obstacle is studied in the framework of the two-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. This problem is of fundamental importance as a dispersive analogue of the corresponding classical gas-dynamics problem. Assuming the oncoming flow speed sufficiently high, we asymptotically reduce the original boundary-value problem for a steady flow past a slender body to the one-dimensional dispersive piston problem described by the nonstationary NLS equation, in which the role of time is played by the stretched $x$-coordinate and the piston motion curve is defined by the spatial body profile. Two steady oblique spatial dispersive shock waves (DSWs) spreading from the pointed ends of the body are generated in both half-planes. These are described analytically by constructing appropriate exact solutions of the Whitham modulation equations for the front DSW and by using a generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule for the oblique dark soliton fan in the rear DSW. We propose an extension of the traditional modulation description of DSWs to include the linear "ship wave" pattern forming outside the nonlinear modulation region of the front DSW. Our analytic results are supported by direct 2D unsteady numerical simulations and are relevant to recent experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates freely expanding past obstacles.

Formation of soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates as a nonlinear Fresnel diffraction of matter waves

The problem of generation of atomic soliton trains in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates is considered in framework of Whitham theory of modulations of nonlinear waves. Complete analytical solution is presented for the case when the initial density distribution has sharp enough boundaries. In this case the process of soliton train formation can be viewed as a nonlinear Fresnel diffraction of matter waves. Theoretical predictions are compared with results of numerical simulations of one- and three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with experimental data on formation of Bose-Einstein bright solitons in cigar-shaped traps.
