The EXO-200 detector, part II: Auxiliary Systems

The EXO-200 experiment searched for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe with a single-phase liquid xenon detector. It used an active mass of 110 kg of 80.6%-enriched liquid xenon in an ultra-low background time projection chamber with ionization and scintillation detection and readout. This paper describes the design and performance of the various support systems necessary for detector operation, including cryogenics, xenon handling, and controls. Novel features of the system were driven by the need to protect the thin-walled detector chamber containing the liquid xenon, to achieve high chemical purity of the Xe, and to maintain thermal uniformity across the detector.

The COHERENT Experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source

The COHERENT collaboration's primary objective is to measure coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) using the unique, high-quality source of tens-of-MeV neutrinos provided by the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In spite of its large cross section, the CEvNS process has never been observed, due to tiny energies of the resulting nuclear recoils which are out of reach for standard neutrino detectors. The measurement of CEvNS has now become feasible, thanks to the development of ultra-sensitive technology for rare decay and weakly-interacting massive particle (dark matter) searches. The CEvNS cross section is cleanly predicted in the standard model; hence its measurement provides a standard model test. It is relevant for supernova physics and supernova-neutrino detection, and enables validation of dark-matter detector background and detector-response models. In the long term, precision measurement of CEvNS will address questions of nuclear structure. COHERENT will deploy multiple detector technologies in a phased approach: a 14-kg CsI[Na] scintillating crystal, 15 kg of p-type point-contact germanium detectors, and 100 kg of liquid xenon in a two-phase time projection chamber. Following an extensive background measurement campaign, a location in the SNS basement has proven to be neutron-quiet and suitable for deployment of the COHERENT detector suite. The simultaneous deployment of the three COHERENT detector subsystems will test the $N^2$ dependence of the cross section and ensure an unambiguous discovery of CEvNS. This document describes concisely the COHERENT physics motivations, sensitivity and plans for measurements at the SNS to be accomplished on a four-year timescale.

The transverse momentum dependence of charged kaon Bose-Einstein correlations in the SELEX experiment

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $Σ^-$, $π^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $λ$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

Observation of a narrow baryon resonance with positive strangeness formed in $K^+$Xe collisions

The charge-exchange reaction K^+ Xe --> K^0 p Xe' is investigated using the data of the DIANA experiment. The distribution of the pK^0 effective mass shows a prominent enhancement near 1538 MeV formed by \sim 80 events above the background, whose width is consistent with being entirely due to the experimental resolution. Under the selections based on a simulation of K^+Xe collisions, the statistical significance of the signal reaches 5.5σ. We interpret this observation as strong evidence for formation of a pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, Θ^+(uudd\bar{s}), in the charge-exchange reaction K^+ n --> K^0 p on a bound neutron. The mass of the Θ^+ baryon is measured as m(Θ^+) = 1538+-2 MeV. Using the ratio between the numbers of resonant and non-resonant charge-exchange events in the peak region, the intrinsic width of this baryon resonance is determined as Γ(Θ^+) = 0.34+-0.10 MeV.

Observation of Two-Neutrino Double-Beta Decay in Xe-136 with EXO-200

We report the observation of two-neutrino double-beta decay in Xe-136 with T_1/2 = 2.11 +- 0.04 (stat.) +- 0.21 (sys.) x 10^21 yr. This second order process, predicted by the Standard Model, has been observed for several nuclei but not for Xe-136. The observed decay rate provides new input to matrix element calculations and to the search for the more interesting neutrino-less double-beta decay, the most sensitive probe for the existence of Majorana particles and the measurement of the neutrino mass scale.

Experimental search for radiative decays of the pentaquark baryon Θ^+(1540)

The data on the reactions K^+Xe --> K^0 γX and K^+Xe --> K^+ γX, obtained with the bubble chamber DIANA, have been analyzed for possible radiative decays of the Θ^+(1540) baryon: Θ^+ --> K^0 p γand Θ^+ --> K^+ n γ. No signals have been observed, and we derive the upper limits Γ(Θ^+ --> K^0 p γ) / Γ(Θ^+ --> K^0 p) < 0.032 and Γ(Θ^+ --> K^+ n γ) / Γ(Θ^+ --> K^+ n) < 0.041 which, using our previous measurement of Γ(Θ^+ --> KN) = (0.39+-0.10) MeV, translate to Γ(Θ^+ --> K^0 p γ) < 8 keV and Γ(Θ^+ --> K^+ n γ) < 11 keV at 90% confidence level. We have also measured the cross sections of K^+ -induced reactions involving emission of a neutral pion: σ(K^+n --> K^0 p π^0) = (68+-18) \mub and σ(K^+N --> K^+ N π^0) = (30+-8) \mub for incident K^+ momentum of 640 MeV.

Formation of a narrow baryon resonance with positive strangeness in K^+ collisions with Xe nuclei

The data on the charge-exchange reaction K^+Xe --> K^0 p Xe, obtained with the bubble chamber DIANA, are reanalyzed using increased statistics and updated selections. Our previous evidence for formation of a narrow pK^0 resonance with mass near 1538 MeV is confirmed and reinforced. The statistical significance of the signal reaches some 8σ(6σ) when estimated as S/\sqrt{B} (S/\sqrt{B+S}). The mass and intrinsic width of the Θ^+ baryon are measured as m = (1538+-2) MeV and Γ= (0.39+-0.10) MeV.

The program of research at hadronic beams of ITEP accelerator. (Collection of experimental proposals)

This is a collection of proposals of experiments at hadronic beams of 10 GeV accelerator, situated at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow, Russia). The proposals were presented by the leaders of several ITEP experimental groups and include selected problems of hadron-hadron (exotic states, scalar mesons, electomagnetic form factors, polarization phenomena etc.) and hadron-nucleon interactions (flucton and nuclear matter properties, hadron properties inside nuclei, interactions at small distances). Most of proposals are united by an idea of a common magnetic spectrometer with LiH(D) and polarized targets, wich could be built on the base of an existing 3m magnet. Some of them also refer to the intrinsic accelerator beam and to the new ion ring.
