Slight excess at 130 GeV in search for a charged Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark and a bottom quark at the Large Hadron Collider

Searches for a charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) decaying to a charm quark and a bottom quark ($H^\pm \to cb$) have been carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the decay of top quarks ($t\to H^\pm b$). In a recent search by the ATLAS collaboration (with all Run II data, 139 fb$^{-1}$) a local excess of around $3σ$ has been observed, which is best fitted by a charged Higgs boson with a mass ($m_{H^\pm}$) of around 130 GeV and a product of branching ratios (BRs) given by BR$(t\to H^\pm b)\times{\rm BR}(H^\pm\to cb)=0.16\%\pm 0.06\%$. In the context of Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM) with independent Yukawa couplings for $H^\pm$ we present the parameter space for which this excess (assuming it to be genuine) can be accommodated, taking into account the limits from LHC searches for $H^\pm\to cs$ and $H^\pm\to τν$ at $m_{H^\pm}$=130 GeV and the constraint from $b\to sγ$. It is then shown that such an excess cannot be explained in 2HDMs with natural flavour conservation, but can be accommodated in the flipped Three-Higgs-Doublet Model (3HDM) and in the aligned 2HDM (A2HDM). Upcoming searches with 139 fb$^{-1}$ in the channels $H^\pm\to cb$ (CMS), $H^\pm \to cs$ (ATLAS/CMS) and $H^\pm \to τν$ (ATLAS/CMS) will determine if the excess is the first sign of an $H^\pm$ with $m_{H^\pm}=130$ GeV.

CP asymmetries of ${\overline B}\to X_s/X_dγ$ in models with three Higgs doublets

Direct CP asymmetries (${\cal A}_{CP}$) in the inclusive decays of ${\overline B}\to X_sγ$ and ${\overline B}\to X_{s+d}γ$ of the order of $1\%$ will be probed at the BELLE II experiment. In this work, three such asymmetries are studied in the context of a three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM), and it is shown that all three ${\cal A}_{CP}$ can be as large as the current experimental limits. Of particular interest is ${\cal A}_{CP}$ for ${\overline B}\to X_{s+d}γ$, which is predicted to be effectively zero in the Standard Model (SM). A measurement of $2.5\%$ or more for this observable with the full BELLE II data would give $5σ$ evidence for physics beyond the SM. We display parameter space in the 3HDM for which such a clear signal is possible.

Light charged Higgs boson with dominant decay to a charm quark and a bottom quark and its search at LEP2 and future $e^+e^-$ colliders

The possibility of a light charged Higgs boson $H^\pm$ that decays predominantly to $cb$ and with a mass in the range 80 GeV $\le M_{H^\pm} \le 90$ GeV is studied in the context of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM). Searches for this decay at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) do not have sensitivity to this mass region at present. It is shown that the searches for $H^\pm$ at LEP2 could be supplemented by either one or two $b$-tags, which would enable such large branching ratios for $H^\pm\to cb$ to be probed in the above mass region. We comment on the possibility of this 3HDM scenario to explain a slight excess in the searches for $H^\pm$ at LEP2, which is best fit by $M_{H^\pm}$ of around 90 GeV, and discuss the prospects for detecting $H^\pm \to cb$ decays at future $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Light charged Higgs boson scenario in 3HDMs

The measurement of the $B\to X_sγ$ process gives important constraints on physics related to charged Higgs bosons ($H^\pm$). In 2-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) with a softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry, a light $H^\pm$ scenario, in which $H^\pm$ can be produced via the top decay, is possible in two of four types of Yukawa interactions (the so-called Type-I and Type-X). In these types of 2HDMs, the $H^\pm \to τ^\pm ν$ decay mode is dominant in wide regions of the parameter space. In this report, we discuss the other possibility of a light charged Higgs boson scenario in 3-Higgs-Doublet Models (3HDMs) based on the results obtained in Ref. [1]. We show that charged Higgs bosons can mainly decay into $cb$ without contradiction with the $B\to X_sγ$ data and the direct searches for charged Higgs bosons at the LHC, and this scenario cannot be realized in the 2HDMs.

$H^\pm\to cb$ in models with two or more Higgs doublets

Searches for light $H^\pm$s via $t\to H^\pm b$ are being carried out at the LHC. Herein, it is normally assumed that the dominant decay channels are $H^\pm\to τν$ and $H^\pm\to cs$ and separate data analyses are performed with comparable sensitivity to the underlying model assumptions. However, the $H^\pm\to cb$ decay rate can be as large as $80\%$ in models with two or more Higgs doublets with natural flavour conservation, while satisfying the constraint from $b\to sγ$ for $m_{H^\pm}< m_t$. Despite the current search strategy for $H^\pm\to cs$ is also sensitive to $H^\pm\to cb$, a significant gain in sensitivity could be obtained by tagging the $b$ quark from the decay $H^\pm\to cb$.

Dependence of the leptonic decays of H^- on the neutrino mixing angles theta_{13} and theta_{23} in models with neutrinophilic charged scalars

In the Higgs Triplet Model and the neutrinophilic Two-Higgs-Doublet Model the observed neutrinos obtain mass from a vacuum expectation value which is much smaller than the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model. Both models contain a singly charged Higgs boson (H^-) whose Yukawa coupling is directly related to the neutrino mass (i.e. a "neutrinophilic charged Higgs"). The partial decay widths of H^- into a charged lepton and a neutrino (H^- to l^- nu) depend identically on the neutrino masses and mixings in the two models. We quantify the impact of the recent measurement of sin^2(2theta_{13}), which plays a crucial role in determining the magnitude of the branching ratio of H^- to e^- nu for the case of a normal neutrino mass ordering if the lightest neutrino mass m_0 < 10^{-3} eV. We also discuss the sizeable dependence of H^- to mu^- nu and H^- to tau^- nu on sin^2(theta_{23}), which would enable information to be obtained on sin^2(theta_{23}) and the sign of Δm^2_{31} if these decays are measured. Such information would help neutrino oscillation experiments to determine the CP-violating phase δ.

Enhancement of H to gamma gamma from doubly charged scalars in the Higgs Triplet Model

The Higgs boson of the Standard Model is being searched for at the LHC in the channel H -> gamma gamma. In the Higgs Triplet Model (HTM) there are contributions to this decay from loops of doubly charged scalars (H^{\pm\pm}) and singly charged scalars (H^\pm) that are not present in the Standard Model. These additional contributions are mediated by the trilinear couplings H_1 H^{++}H^{--} and H_1 H^{+}H^{-}, where H_1 is the lightest CP-even Higgs boson. We point out the possibility of constructive interference of the H^{\pm\pm} contribution with that of the W^\pm contribution, which enables a substantial enhancement of the branching ratio of H_1 -> gamma gamma in the HTM. The magnitude of the contribution of $H^{\pm\pm}$ is essentially determined by the mass of H^{\pm\pm} (m_{H^{\pm\pm}}) and a quartic scalar coupling (λ_1), with constructive interference arising for λ_1 < 0. Consequently, the ongoing searches for H -> gamma gamma restrict the parameter space of [m_{H^{\pm\pm}},λ_1] more stringently for λ_1 < 0 than for the recently-studied case of destructive interference with λ_1 > 0. Moreover, if the excess of gamma gamma events around a mass of 125 GeV in the LHC searches for H -> gamma gamma is substantiated with larger data samples, and the branching ratio is measured to be somewhat larger than that for the SM Higgs boson, then such an enhancement could be readily accommodated by H_1 in the HTM with λ_1 <0.

Five-lepton and six-lepton signatures from production of neutral triplet scalars in the Higgs Triplet Model

The neutral triplet scalars (H^0, A^0) in the Higgs Triplet Model (HTM) are difficult to detect at the LHC for the case of mass degeneracy with the singly charged (H^+) and doubly charged (H^++) scalars. A non-zero value of a specific quartic coupling in the scalar potential removes this degeneracy, and positive values of this coupling would give rise to the mass hierarchy m_{A^0,H^0} > m_{H^+} > m_{H^++}. In this scenario the decays H^0-> H^+ W^* and A^0-> H^+ W^*, followed by H^+ -> H^{++} W^*, can proceed with large branching ratios, even for small mass splittings among the triplet scalars. Such a cascade process would lead to production of H^{++}H^{--} accompanied by several virtual W bosons, and would provide a way of observing H^0 and A^0 with a signature which is different from that of the conventional production process for doubly charged scalars, q qbar -> γ^*, Z^* -> H^{++}H^{--}. Assuming the decay H^{++} to l^+ l^+, we quantify the magnitude of the five-lepton and six-lepton signals in these channels, which have essentially negligible backgrounds at the LHC.

Light charged Higgs bosons decaying to charm and bottom quarks in models with two or more Higgs doublets

Searches for light charged Higgs bosons (H^\pm) in the decay of top quarks, t -> H^\pm b, are being carried out at the LHC and at the Tevatron. It is assumed that the dominant decay channels for such an H^\pm state are either H^\pm -> τνor H^\pm -> cs, and separate searches are performed with comparable sensitivity to the parameters m_{H^\pm} and tanbeta of the scalar potential. The branching ratio for the decay H^\pm -> cb can be as large as 80% in the Aligned Two Higgs Doublet Model and in models with three or more Higgs doublets with natural flavour conservation, while satisfying the constraint from b -> s gamma for m_{H^\pm} < m_t. Although the current search strategy for H^\pm -> cs is also sensitive to H^\pm -> cb, a considerable gain in sensitivity could be obtained by tagging the b quark from the decay H^\pm -> cb. Such an analysis, which could be readily performed at the Tevatron and in the 7 TeV and 8 TeV runs of the LHC, would probe a parameter space of the fermionic couplings of H^\pm in the above models which at present cannot be probed by experimental observables in flavour physics.

The decay Bs -> mu+ mu-: updated SUSY constraints and prospects

We perform a study of the impact of the recently released limits on BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) by LHCb and CMS on several SUSY models. We show that the obtained constraints can be superior to those which are derived from direct searches for SUSY particles in some scenarios, and the use of a double ratio of purely leptonic decays involving Bs -> mu+ mu- can further strengthen such constraints. We also discuss the experimental sensitivity and prospects for observation of Bs -> mu+ mu- during the sqrt(s)=7 TeV run of the LHC, and its potential implications.

Production of doubly charged scalars from the decay of a heavy SM-like Higgs boson in the Higgs Triplet Model

The Higgs Triplet Model (HTM) of neutrino mass generation predicts the existence of doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^{\pm\pm}). In the HTM a scalar eigenstate (H_2) is dominantly composed of the scalar field from the isospin doublet, and could be significantly heavier than H^{\pm\pm}. Such a scenario would allow the possibility of a large branching ratio for the decay H_2-> H^{++}H^{--}. From the production mechanism of gluon-gluon fusion, gg-> H_2, the above decay mode would give rise to pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^{++}H^{--}) with a cross section which could be significantly larger than the cross sections for the standard production mechanisms qqbar -> γ,Z-> H^{++}H^{--} and q'qbar -> W -> H^{\pm\pm}H^{\mp}. We discuss the phenomenological consequences for the ongoing searches for H^{\pm\pm} at the Tevatron and at the LHC.

preprint2011arXiv

Production of doubly charged scalars from the decay of singly charged scalars in the Higgs Triplet Model

The existence of doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^{\pm\pm}) is a distinctive feature of the Higgs Triplet Model (HTM), in which neutrinos obtain tree-level masses from the vacuum expectation value of a neutral scalar in a triplet representation of SU(2)_L. We point out that a large branching ratio for the decay of a singly charged Higgs boson to a doubly charged Higgs boson via H^\pm\to H^{\pm\pm}W^* is possible in a sizeable parameter space of the HTM. From the production mechanism q'qbar\to W^* \to H^{\pm\pm}H^\mp the above decay mode would give rise to pair production of H^{\pm\pm}, with a cross section which can be comparable to that of the standard pair-production mechanism qqbar\to γ^*,Z^* \to H^{++}H^{--}. We suggest that the presence of a sizeable branching ratio for H^\pm\to H^{\pm\pm}W^* could significantly enhance the detection prospects of H^{\pm\pm} in the four-lepton channel. Moreover, the decays H^0\to H^\pm W^* and A^0\to H^\pm W^* from production of the neutral triplet scalars H^0 and A^0 would also provide an additional source of H^\pm, which can subsequently decay to H^{\pm\pm}.

Fermiophobia in a Higgs Triplet Model

A Fermiophobic Higgs boson can arise in models with an extended Higgs sector, such as models with scalars in an isospin triplet representation. In a specific model with a scalar triplet and spontaneous violation of lepton number induced by a scalar singlet field, we show that fermiophobia is not a fine-tuned situation, unlike in Two Higgs Doublet Models. We study distinctive signals of fermiophobia which can be probed at the LHC. For the case of a small Higgs mass a characteristic signal would be a moderate B(H ->γγ) accompanied by a large B(H -> JJ) (where J is a Majoron), the latter being an invisible decay. For the case of a large Higgs mass there is the possibility of dominant H -> ZZ, WW and suppressed H -> JJ decay modes. In this situation, B(H -> ZZ) is larger than B(H -> WW), which differs from the SM prediction.

Leptonic signatures of doubly charged Higgs boson production at the LHC

The production of doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^{\pm\pm}) at the CERN LHC can give rise to distinctive multi-lepton signatures. The discovery potential of H^{\pm\pm} can be optimized by considering a search strategy which is sensitive to both of the dominant production mechanisms, q\bar q\to H^{++}H^{--} and q\bar {q'}\to H^{\pm\pm}H^{\mp}. We compare the discovery potential for the signatures of exactly four leptons and at least three leptons in the final state, using the same set of cuts. We have carried out fast detector simulations at the LHC for both signal and backgrounds for a wide range of values of the charged Higgs mass. We find that the use of the latter channel can substantially improve the detection prospects of the doubly charged Higgs boson at the LHC.

Measuring V_ub and probing SUSY with double ratios of purely leptonic decays of B and D mesons

The experimental prospects for precise measurements of the leptonic decays B_u -> tau nu / mu nu, B_s -> mu+ mu-, D -> mu nu and D_s -> mu nu / tau nu are very promising. Double ratios involving four of these decays can be defined in which the dependence on the values of the decay constants is essentially eliminated, thus enabling complementary measurements of the CKM matrix element V_ub with a small theoretical error. We quantify the experimental error in a possible future measurement of |V_ub| using this approach, and show that it is competitive with the anticipated precision from the conventional approaches. Moreover, it is shown that such double ratios can be more effective than the individual leptonic decays as a probe of the parameter space of supersymmetric models. We emphasize that the double ratios have the advantage of using |V_ub| as an input parameter (for which there is experimental information), while the individual decays have an uncertainty from the decay constants (e.g. f_B_s), and hence a reliance on theoretical techniques such as lattice QCD.

Phenomenology of Large Mixing for the CP-even Neutral Scalars of the Higgs Triplet Model

The Higgs Triplet Model contains two CP-even neutral scalar eigenstates, each having components from an isospin doublet and an isospin triplet scalar field. The mixing angle can be maximal if the masses of the scalar eigenstates are close to degeneracy. We quantify the dependence of the mixing angle on the mass splitting and on the vacuum expectation value of the neutral triplet scalar. We determine the parameter space for maximal mixing, and study the observability of both CP-even Higgs bosons at the CERN LHC

Constraints on charged Higgs bosons from D(s)+- -> mu+- nu and D(s)+- -> tau+- nu

The decays D(s)+- -> mu+- nu and D(s)+- -> tau+- nu have traditionally been used to measure the D(s)+- meson decay constant f_D(s). Recent measurements at CLEO-c and the B factories suggest a branching ratio for both decays somewhat higher than the Standard Model prediction using f_D(s) from unquenched lattice calculations. The charged Higgs boson (H+-) in the Two Higgs Doublet Model (Type II) would also mediate these decays, but any sizeable contribution from H+- can only suppress the branching ratios and consequently is now slightly disfavoured. It is shown that constraints on the parameters tan(beta) and m_H+- from such decays can be competitive with and complementary to analogous constraints derived from the leptonic meson decays B+- -> tau+- nu_tau and K+- -> mu+- nu_mu, especially if lattice calculations eventually prefer f_D(s) < 250 MeV.

Doubly charged Higgs bosons and three-lepton signatures in the Higgs Triplet Model

Doubly charged Higgs bosons, H^{\pm\pm}, are being searched for in the Tevatron experiments. The most recent search by the D0 collaboration seeks three muons (mu^\pmμ^\pmμ^\mp), which are assumed to originate from the pair-production process, q\overline q\to H^{++}H^{--}, followed by the decay H^{\pm\pm} \to μ^\pm μ^\pm. In this three-lepton (3l) channel there are six distinct signatures for l=e or μ. In the context of the Higgs Triplet Model, we quantify the dependence of the event numbers for the 3l channels on the parameters of the neutrino mass matrix. It is also shown that the inclusion of the production mechanism q \overline{q'} \to H^{\pm\pm}H^{\mp}, followed by the decay H^\pm\to l^ \pmν, would significantly increase the discovery potential in these channels. We then provide perspectives on the production of these channels at the Tevatron and LHC.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Neutrino Masses, Baryogenesis and Bilinear R-parity Violation

We consider the impact of cosmological $B-L$ constraints on supersymmetric standard models with bilinear breaking of R-parity. In order to avoid erasing any primordial baryon or lepton asymmetry above the electroweak scale, $B-L$ violation for at least one generation should be sufficiently small. Working in the context of models with non--universal soft supersymmetry breaking masses, we show how the above cosmological constraint can be satisfied while simultaneously providing a neutrino mass matrix required by current data.

Large enhancement of D -> e nu and Ds -> e nu in R Parity violating SUSY models

The purely leptonic decays D -> e nu and Ds -> e nu, for which no experimental limits exist, are highly suppressed in the Standard Model. Mere observation of these decays at the B factories BELLE/BaBar or forthcoming CLEO-c would be a clear signal of physics beyond the SM. We show that R parity violating slepton contributions can give rise to spectacular enhancements of the decay rates, resulting in branching ratios as large as 5 x 10^-3, which strongly motivates a search in these channels.

R Parity violating enhancement of Bu -> l nu and Bc -> l nu

We study the decays Bu -> l nu and Bc -> l nu in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with explicit R parity violation. We analyse the correlation between the two decays and show that branching ratios (BRs) for Bc -> l nu may be of order 5% (over 40% in one case), without violating current bounds on Bu -> l nu. Although Bc mesons are inaccessible at the e+e- B factories, such large BRs for Bc -> l nu would possibly be within experimental observability at LEP and the Tevatron Run II, with much larger yields expected at the hadronic B factories. We also update some earlier bounds on products of R parity violating couplings in the light of new experimental results.

Supersymmetric enhancement of associated ZA^0 production at e^+e^- colliders

We study the associated production of the A^0 neutral CP-odd Higgs boson with a neutral gauge boson Z in high energy e^+ e^- collisions at the one loop level. We present a detailed discussion for the total cross-section predicted in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and make a comparison with the non-SUSY Two Higgs Doublet Model (THDM). We show that the MSSM cross-section may be enhanced compared to that for the THDM.

Direct CP Asymmetry of B -> X_d,s γin a model with Vector quarks

We investigate the effect of vector quarks on the inclusive decays B -> X_d,s γ. We show that the branching ratio of B -> X_d γcan differ sizably from the SM and MSSM predictions, being enhanced to present experimental observability or suppressed such that present runs of the B factories would not observe it. Current measurements of the direct CP asymmetry (A_CP) for B -> X_s γare sensitive to the contribution from B -> X_d γ. For a sufficiently enhanced BR(B -> X_d γ) we show that the dominant contribution to the combined asymmetry may be from B -> X_d γ. Thus any large value for A_CP should not immediately be attributed to B -> X_s γ, which stresses the importance of good K/pi separation.

preprint2001arXiv

Effect of Supersymmetric phases on the Direct CP Asymmetry of B -> X_d γ

We investigate the effect of supersymmetric CP violating phases on the inclusive decay B\to X_dγ. Although such a decay contains a large background from B\to X_sγ, if isolated it may exhibit sizeable CP violation, both in the Standard Model (SM) and in the context of models beyond the SM. With unconstrained supersymmetric CP violating phases we show that the direct CP asymmetry (A_CP) lies in the region -40% \le A_CP \le 40%, where a positive asymmetry would constitute a clear signal of physics beyond the SM. Even if a direct measurement of B\to X_dγproves too dif ficult experimentally, its asymmetry contributes non-negligibly to the measurements of A_CP for B\to X_sγ, and thus should be included in future analyses. We show t hat there may be both constructive and destructive interference between A^dγ_CP and A^sγ_CP.

Probing scalar-pseudoscalar mixing in the CP violating MSSM at high-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders

We study the production processes $e^+e^-\to H^0_iZ$, $H^0_iH^0_j$ and $H^0_iν_e\overline ν_e$ in the context of the CP violating MSSM. In a given channel we show that the cross-section for all i (=1,2,3) can be above 0.1 fb provided $M_{H_{2,3}}\la 300$ GeV. This should be detectable at a Next Linear Collider and would provide evidence for scalar-pseudoscalar mixing.
