Magnetic structure of an incommensurate phase of La-doped BiFe0.5Sc0.5O3: Role of antisymmetric exchange interactions

A 20% substitution of Bi with La in the perovskite Bi1-xLaxFe0.5Sc0.5O3 system obtained under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has been found to induce an incommensurately modulated structural phase. The room temperature X-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns of this phase were successfully refined using the Imma(0,0,g)s00 superspace group (g=0.534(3)) with the modulation applied to Bi/La- and oxygen displacements. The modulated structure is closely related to the prototype antiferroelectric structure of PbZrO3 which can be considered as the lock-in variant of the latter with g =0.5. Below T_N = 220 K, the neutron diffraction data provide evidence for a long-range G-type antiferromagnetic ordering commensurate with the average Imma structure. Based on a general symmetry consideration, we show that the direction of the spins is controlled by the antisymmetric exchange imposed by the two primary structural distortions, namely oxygen octahedral tilting and incommensurate atomic displacements. The tilting is responsible for the onset of a weak ferromagnetism, observed in magnetization measurements, whereas the incommensurate displacive mode is dictated by the symmetry to couple a spin-density wave. The obtained results demonstrate that antisymmetric exchange is the dominant anisotropic interaction in Fe3+ based distorted perovskites with a nearly quenched orbital degree of freedom.

Evolution of the fishtail-effect in pure and Ag-doped MG-YBCO

We report on magnetic measurements carried out in a textured YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and YBa$_2$(Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$)$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (at $x \approx$ 0.02) crystals. The so-called fishtail-effect (FE) or second magnetization peak has been observed in a wide temperature range 0.4~$<T/T_c<$~0.8 for $\textbf{H}\parallel c$. The origin of the FE arises for the competition between surface barrier and bulk pinning. This is confirmed in a non-monotonically behavior of the relaxation rate $R$. The value $H_{max}$ for Ag-doped crystals is larger than for the pure one due to the presence of additional pinning centers, above all on silver atoms.

Interplay of frustration and magnetic field in the two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Cu(tn)Cl$_2$

Specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, spanning low temperatures ($T \geq 40$ mK) and high magnetic fields ($B \leq 14$ T), have been performed on a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet Cu(tn)Cl$_{2}$ (tn = C$_{3}$H$_{10}$N$_{2}$). The compound represents an $S = 1/2$ spatially anisotropic triangular magnet realized by a square lattice with nearest-neighbor ($J/k_{B} = 3$ K), frustrating next-nearest-neighbor ($0 < J^{\prime}/J < 0.6$), and interlayer ($|J^{\prime \prime}/J| \approx 10^{-3}$) interactions. The absence of long-range magnetic order down to $T = $ 60 mK in $B = 0$ and the $T^{2}$ behavior of the specific heat for $T \leq 0.4$ K and $B \geq 0$ are considered evidence of high degree of 2D magnetic order. In fields lower than the saturation field, $B_{\text{sat}} = 6.6$ T, a specific heat anomaly, appearing near 0.8 K, is ascribed to bound vortex-antivortex pairs stabilized by the applied magnetic field. The resulting magnetic phase diagram is remarkably consistent with the one predicted for the ideal square lattice, except that $B_{\text{sat}}$ is shifted to values lower than expected. Potential explanations for this observation, as well as the possibility of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in a spatially anisotropic triangular magnet with the Néel ground state, are discussed.

Experimental study of MnCl3(C12H8N2) - an S = 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

The thermodynamic and magnetic properties of MnCl3(C12H8N2), have been studied down to 2 K. The material is an S = 2 antiferromagnetic linear chain that undergoes long-range ordering to a canted antiferromagnetic state at 23 K. The comparison of magnetic data from polycrystalline samples with the results of specific heat measurements using a pressed pellet of powder reveals the importance of the length of the chains in the sample in relation to the magnetic correlation length.
