Threshold $π^-$ Photoproduction on the Neutron

Recent data from the PIONS$@$MAX-lab Collaboration, measuring the total cross section of the pion incoherent photoproduction $γd\toπ^-pp$ near threshold, have been used to extract the E$_{0+}$ multipole and total cross section of the reaction $γn\!\to\!π^-p$, also near threshold. These are the first measurements of the reaction $γd\toπ^-pp$ in the threshold region. The value of E$_{0+}$ is extracted through a fit to the deuteron data in a photoproduction model accounting for final-state interactions. The model takes an $S$-wave approximation for the elementary reaction $γn\!\to\!π^-p$ with E$_{0+}\! = $ const in the threshold region. The obtained value E$_{0+} = -31.86\pm 0.8$ (in $10^{-3}/m_{π^+}$ units) is in agreement with other existing results. Model predictions for the total cross section $σ(γn\!\to\!π^-p)$ are also given.

Near-threshold $π^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $π^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $γ$ d -> $π^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $π^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $γ$ n -> $π^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.

On the Extraction of Cross Sections for pi0 and eta Photoproduction off Neutrons from Deuteron Data

We discuss the procedure of extracting the photoproduction cross section for neutral pseudoscalar mesons off neutrons from deuteron data. The main statement is that the final-state interaction (FSI) corrections for the proton and neutron target are in general not equal, but for pi0 production there are special cases were they have to be identical and there are large regions in the parameter space of incident photon energy and pion polar angle, θ^*, where they happen to be quite similar. The corrections for both target nucleons are practically identical for $π_0$ production in the energy range of the Delta(1232)3/2+ resonance due to the specific isospin structure of this excitation. Also above the $Δ$-isobar range large differences between proton and neutron correction factors are only predicted for extreme forward angles ($θ^*$ < 20 deg), but the results are similar for larger angles. Numerical results for the gp-->pi0p and gn-->pi0n correction factors are discussed. Also the model description for the available data on the differential gd-->pi0pn cross sections are given.

{\bar p}p-annihilation processes in the tree approximation of SU(3) chiral effective theory

The {\bar p}p-annihilation reactions {\bar p}p-->eta eta eta and {\bar p}p--> eta K{\bar K} at rest are considered in the tree approximation in the framework of SU(3) chiral effective theory at leading order. The calculated branchings are compared with the data. The results for neutral (eta eta eta, K^0{\bar K^0}eta) and charged (K^+ K^- eta) channels are essentially different.

Amplitude analysis of gamma n --> pi- p data above 1 GeV

We report a new extraction of nucleon resonance couplings using pi- photoproduction cross sections on the neutron. The world database for the process gamma n --> pi- p above 1 GeV has quadrupled with the addition of new differential cross sections from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab in Hall B. Differential cross sections from CLAS have been improved with a new final-state interaction determination using a diagramatic technique taking into account the NN and piN final-state interaction amplitudes. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. With the addition of these new cross sections, significant changes are seen in the high-energy behavior of the SAID cross sections and amplitudes.

Evaluation of the gn-->pi-p differential cross sections in the Delta-isobar region

Differential cross sections for the process gn-->pi-p have been extracted from MAMI-B measurements of gd-->pi-pp, accounting for final-state interaction effects, using a diagrammatic technique taking into account the NN and piN final-state interaction amplitudes. Results are compared to previous measurements of the inverse process, pi-p--> ng, and recent multipole analyses.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory: next-to-next-to-leading order contributions

A complete calculation of the pion-nucleon loops that contribute to the transition operator for $NN\to NNπ$ up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) in chiral effective field theory near threshold is presented. The evaluation is based on the so-called momentum counting scheme, which takes into account the relatively large momentum of the initial nucleons inherent in pion-production reactions. We show that the significant cancellations between the loops found at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the earlier studies are also operative at N$^2$LO. In particular, the $1/m_N$ corrections (with $m_N$ being the nucleon mass) to loop diagrams cancel at N$^2$LO, as do the contributions of the pion loops involving the low-energy constants $c_i$, i=1...4. In contrast to the NLO calculation however, the cancellation of loops at N$^2$LO is incomplete, yielding a non-vanishing contribution to the transition amplitude. Together with the one-pion exchange tree-level operators, the loop contributions provide the long-range part of the production operator. Finally, we discuss the phenomenological implications of these findings. In particular, we find that the amplitudes generated by the N$^2$LO pion loops yield contributions comparable in size with the most important phenomenological heavy-meson exchange amplitudes.

The multiple-scattering series in pion-deuteron scattering and the nucleon-nucleon potential: perspectives from effective field theory

Important contributions to meson-nucleus scattering are produced by terms in the multiple-scattering series, which is defined as the sum of all diagrams where the meson scatters back and forth between a pair of static nucleons before leaving the nucleus. In particular, the sum of this series is needed for an accurate description of kaon-deuteron scattering, and appears as part of the nucleon-nucleon potential. In this article we present some effective-field-theory (EFT)-based insights into this series in the case of two-nucleon systems. In particular, we discuss the fact that, if meson-nucleon scattering is approximated by the scattering-length term, individual terms of the series are divergent, and enhanced with respect to the straightforward expectation from chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). This apparently indicates the presence of similarly enhanced counterterms. However, we show that when the series is resummed the divergences cancel, such that no additional information on short-range interactions is needed to obtain predictions for observables after resummation. We discuss the conditions under which this resummation is justified. We show that the same issues arise in the $NN$ potential, where the resummed series produces poles whose appearance indicates the breakdown scale of the $χ$PT expansion for that quantity. This demonstrates unequivocally that $χ$PT cannot be applied to compute $V(r)$ for distances smaller than $r \sim 1$ fm at least in the theory without explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. We briefly discuss whether this bound can be lowered if the Delta resonance is included in the EFT as an explicit degree of freedom.

Extracting the photoproduction cross section off the neutron gn-->pi-p from deuteron data with FSI effects

The incoherent pion photoproduction reaction gd-->pi-pp is considered theoretically in a wide energy region Eth =< Eg =< 2700 MeV. The model applied contains the impulse approximation as well as the NN- and piN-FSI amplitudes. The aim of the paper is to study a reliable way for getting the information on elementary gn-->pi-p reaction cross section beyond the impulse approximation for gd-->pi-pp. For the elementary gN-->piN, NN-->NN, and piN-->piN amplitudes, the results of the GW DAC are used. There are no additional theoretical constraints. The calculated cross section dSigma/dOmega(gd->pi-pp) are compared with existing data. The procedure used to extract information on the differential cross section dSigma/dOmega(gn-->pi-p) on the neutron from the deuteron data using the FSI correction factor R is discussed. The calculations for R versus pi-p CM angle θ_1 of the outgoing pion are performed at different photon-beam energies with kinematical cuts for "quasi-free" process gn-->pi-p. The results show a sizeable FSI effect R \neq 1 from S-wave part of pp-FSI at small angles close to θ_1 ~ 0: this region narrows as the photon energy increases. At larger angles, the effect is small (|R-1|<<1) and agrees with estimations of FSI in the Glauber approach.

Three-body $D\bar{D}π$ dynamics for the X(3872)

We investigate the role played by the three-body $D\bar{D}π$ dynamics on the near-threshold resonance X(3872) charmonium state, which is assumed to be formed by nonperturbative $D\bar D^*$ dynamics. It is demonstrated that, as compared to the naive static-pions approximation, the imaginary parts that originate from the inclusion of dynamical pions reduce substantially the width from the $D\bar{D}π$ intermediate state. In particular, for a resonance peaked at 0.5 MeV below the $D^0\bar D^{*0}$ threshold, this contribution to the width is reduced by about a factor of 2, and the effect of the pion dynamics on the width grows as long as the resonance is shifted towards the $D^0\bar{D^0}π^0$ threshold. Although the physical width of the $X$ is dominated by inelastic channels, our finding should still be of importance for the $X$ line shapes in the $D\bar{D}π$ channel below $D{\bar D}^*$ threshold. For example, in the scattering length approximation, the imaginary part of the scattering length includes effects of all the pion dynamics and does not only stem from the $D^*$ width. Meanwhile, we find that another important quantity for the $X$ phenomenology, the residue at the $X$ pole, is weakly sensitive to dynamical pions. In particular, we find that the binding energy dependence of this quantity from the full calculation is close to that found from a model with pointlike $D\bar D^*$ interactions only, consistent with earlier claims. Coupled-channel effects (inclusion of the charged $D\bar{D}^*$ channel) turn out to have a moderate impact on the results.

Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a near-threshold resonance

We investigate the interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a physical state representing a near-threshold resonance for the case of a single continuum channel. We demonstrate that such a near-threshold resonance may possess quite peculiar properties if both quark and meson dynamics generate weakly coupled near-threshold poles in the S-matrix. In particular, the scattering t-matrix may possess zeros in this case. We also discuss possible implications for production reactions as well as studies within lattice QCD.

Stable branches of a solution for a fermion on domain wall

We discuss the case when a fermion occupies an excited non-zero frequency level in the field of domain wall. We demonstrate that a solution exists for the coupling constant in the limited interval $1<g<g_{max}\approx 1.65$. We show that indeed there are different branches of stable solution for $g$ in this interval. The first one corresponds to a fermion located on the domain wall ($1<g<\sqrt[4]{2π}$). The second branch, which belongs to the interval $\sqrt[4]{2π}\le g\le g_{max}$, describes a polarized fermion off the domain wall. The third branch with $1<g<g_{max}$ describes an excited antifermion in the field of the domain wall.

p-Wave pion production from nucleon-nucleon collisions

We investigate p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In particular, we show that it is possible to describe simultaneously the p-wave amplitudes in the $pn\to ppπ^-$, $pp\to pnπ^+$, $pp\to dπ^+$ channels by adjusting a single low-energy constant accompanying the short-range operator which is available at this order. This study provides a non-trivial test of the applicability of chiral effective field theory to reactions of the type $NN\to NNπ$.

Perturbative approach to the hydrogen atom in strong magnetic field

The states of hydrogen atom with principal quantum number n <= 3 and zero magnetic quantum number in constant homogeneous magnetic field H are considered. The perturbation theory series is summed with the help of Borel transformation and conformal mapping of the Borel variable. Convergence of approximate energy eigenvalues and their agreement with corresponding existing results are observed for external fields up to n^3 H ~ 5. The possibility of restoring the asymptotic behaviour of energy levels using perturbation theory coefficients is also discussed.

On decay of large amplitude bubble of disoriented chiral condensate

The time evolution of initially formed large amplitude bubble of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) is studied. It is found that the evolution of this object may have a relatively long pre-decay stage. Simple explanation of such delay of the DCC bubble decay is given. This delay is related to the existence of the approximate solutions of multi-soliton type of the corresponding radial sine-Gordon equation in (3+1) dimensions at large bubble radius.

A remark on collisions of domain walls in a supersymmetric model

The process of collision of two parallel domain walls in a supersymmetric model is studied both in effective Lagrangian approximation and by numerical solving of the exact classical field problem. For small initial velocities we find that the walls interaction looks like elastic reflection with some delay. It is also shown that in such approximation internal parameter of the wall may be considered as a time-dependent dynamical variable.

Non-BPS domain wall configurations in a supersymmetric model

We study the time evolution of configurations in the form of two parallel domain walls moving towards each other in a supersymmetric field model. The configurations involved are not BPS-saturated. It is found that for such collisions there exists some critical value $v_{cr}\approx0.9120$ of the initial velocity v_i of the walls. At v_i<v_{cr} we observed reflection, that was not followed by change of vacuum states sequence. In collisions with v_i>v_{cr} the sequence of vacuum states changes. The results of the numerical simulations are in agreement with "potential" consideration.

Kink-antikink interactions in the double sine-Gordon equation and the problem of resonance frequencies

We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon" (DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter $R>0$. For small values of $R$ we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies. We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink. We show that in this region of the parameter $R$ the effective long-range interaction between kink and antikink takes place.

High orders of the perturbation theory for hydrogen atom in magnetic field

The states of hydrogen atom with principal quantum number $n\le3$ and zero magnetic quantum number in constant homogeneous magnetic field ${\cal H}$ are considered. The coefficients of energy eigenvalues expansion up to 75th order in powers of ${\cal H}^2$ are obtained for these states. The series for energy eigenvalues and wave functions are summed up to ${\cal H}$ values of the order of atomic magnetic field. The calculations are based on generalization of the moment method, which may be used in other cases of the hydrogen atom perturbation by a polynomial in coordinates potential.
