Nonequilibrium quasistationary spin disordered state in the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

Excitation by light pulses enables the manipulation of phases of quantum condensed matter. Here, we photoexcite high-energy holon-doublon pairs as a way to alter the magnetic free energy landscape of the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, with the aim to dynamically stabilize a proximate spin liquid phase. The holon-doublon pair recombination through multimagnon emission is tracked through the time-evolution of the magnetic linear dichroism originating from the competing zigzag spin ordered ground state. A small holon-doublon density suffices to reach a spin disordered state. The phase transition is described within a dynamic Ginzburg-Landau framework, corroborating the quasistationary nature of the transient spin disordered phase. Our work provides insight into the coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and suggests a new route to reach a proximate spin liquid phase in Kitaev-Heisenberg magnets.

Thermalization and Bose-Einstein condensation of quantum light in bulk nonlinear media

We study the thermalization and the Bose-Einstein condensation of a paraxial, spectrally narrow beam of quantum light propagating in a lossless bulk Kerr medium. The spatiotemporal evolution of the quantum optical field is ruled by a Heisenberg equation analogous to the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger equation of dilute atomic Bose gases. Correspondingly, in the weak-nonlinearity regime, the phase-space density evolves according to the Boltzmann equation. Expressions for the thermalization time and for the temperature and the chemical potential of the eventual Bose-Einstein distribution are found. After discussing experimental issues, we introduce an optical setup allowing the evaporative cooling of a guided beam of light towards Bose-Einstein condensation. This might serve as a novel source of coherent light.

Thermodynamic Equilibrium as a Symmetry of the Schwinger-Keldysh Action

The time evolution of an extended quantum system can be theoretically described in terms of the Schwinger-Keldysh functional integral formalism, whose action conveniently encodes the information about the dynamics. We show here that the action of quantum systems evolving in thermal equilibrium is invariant under a symmetry transformation which distinguishes them from generic open systems. A unitary or dissipative dynamics having this symmetry naturally leads to the emergence of a Gibbs thermal stationary state. Moreover, the fluctuation-dissipation relations characterizing the linear response of an equilibrium system to external perturbations can be derived as the Ward-Takahashi identities associated with this symmetry. Accordingly, the latter provides an efficient check for the onset of thermodynamic equilibrium and it makes testing the validity of fluctuation-dissipation relations unnecessary. In the classical limit, this symmetry renders the one which is known to characterize equilibrium in the stochastic dynamics of classical systems coupled to thermal baths, described by Langevin equations.
