The ALFA Roman Pot Detectors of ATLAS

The ATLAS Roman Pot system is designed to determine the total proton-proton cross-section as well as the luminosity at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by measuring elastic proton scattering at very small angles. The system is made of four Roman Pot stations, located in the LHC tunnel in a distance of about 240~m at both sides of the ATLAS interaction point. Each station is equipped with tracking detectors, inserted in Roman Pots which approach the LHC beams vertically. The tracking detectors consist of multi-layer scintillating fibre structures readout by Multi-Anode-Photo-Multipliers.

The Development of Sealed UV Sensitive Gaseous Detectors and their Applications

We have developed commercial prototypes of sealed gaseous detectors combined with CsI photocathodes and/or filled with photosensitive vapors. The rirst results of application of these devices for the detection of flames in daylight conditions and for the detection of scintillation lights from noble liquids will be presented. The main conclusion from our studies is that for some applications the sealed UV sensitive gaseous detectors have superior performance (higher practical quantum efficiency and better signal to noise ratio) than existing commercial UV sensitive detectors. Additionally, they are much cheaper.

Identification of High $\rm p_{\perp}$ Particles with the STAR-RICH Detector

The STAR-RICH detector extends the particle identification capapbilities of the STAR experiment for charged hadrons at mid-rapidity. This detector represents the first use of a proximity-focusing CsI-based RICH detector in a collider experiment. It provides identification of pions and kaons up to 3 GeV/c and protons up to 5 GeV/c. The characteristics and performance of the device in the inaugural RHIC run are described.
