Unique decomposition for a polynomial of low rank

Let FF be a homogeneous polynomial of degree dd in m+1m+1 variables defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and suppose that FF belongs to the ss-th secant variety of the dd-uple Veronese embedding of Pm\mathbb{P}^m into $ \PP {{m+d\choose d}-1}$ but that its minimal decomposition as a sum of dd-th powers of linear forms requires more than ss addenda. We show that if s≤ds\leq d then FF can be uniquely written as F=M1d+⋯+Mtd+QF=M_1^d+\cdots + M_t^d+Q, where M1,…,MtM_1, \ldots, M_t are linear forms with t≤(d−1)/2t\leq (d-1)/2, and QQ a binary form such that Q=∑i=1qlid−dimiQ=\sum_{i=1}^q l_i^{d-d_i}m_i with lil_i's linear forms and mim_i's forms of degree did_i such that ∑(di+1)=s−t\sum (d_i+1)=s-t.

Partial stratification of secant varieties of Veronese varieties via curvilinear subschemes

We give a partial "quasi-stratification" of the secant varieties of the order dd Veronese variety Xm,dX_{m,d} of Pm\mathbb {P}^m. It covers the set σt(Xm,d)†σ_t(X_{m,d})^{\dagger} of all points lying on the linear span of curvilinear subschemes of Xm,dX_{m,d}, but two "quasi-strata" may overlap. For low border rank two different "quasi-strata" are disjoint and we compute the symmetric rank of their elements. Our tool is the Hilbert schemes of curvilinear subschemes of Veronese varieties. To get a stratification we attach to each P∈σt(Xm,d)†P\in σ_t(X_{m,d})^{\dagger} the minimal label of a quasi-stratum containing it.

On the variety parametrizing completely decomposable polynomials

The purpose of this paper is to relate the variety parameterizing completely decomposable homogeneous polynomials of degree dd in n+1n+1 variables on an algebraically closed field, called $\Split_{d}(\PP n)$, with the Grassmannian of n−1n-1 dimensional projective subspaces of $\PP {n+d-1}$. We compute the dimension of some secant varieties to $\Split_{d}(\PP n)$ and find a counterexample to a conjecture that wanted its dimension related to the one of the secant variety to $\GG (n-1, n+d-1)$. Moreover by using an invariant embedding of the Veronse variety into the Plücker space, then we are able to compute the intersection of $\GG (n-1, n+d-1)$ with $\Split_{d}(\PP n)$, some of its secant variety, the tangential variety and the second osculating space to the Veronese variety.

Secant varieties to osculating varieties of Veronese embeddings of Pn\mathbb{P}^n

A well known theorem by Alexander-Hirschowitz states that all the higher secant varieties of Vn,dV_{n,d} (the dd-uple embedding of Pn\mathbb{P}^n) have the expected dimension, with few known exceptions. We study here the same problem for Tn,dT_{n,d}, the tangential variety to Vn,dV_{n,d}, and prove a conjecture, which is the analogous of Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem, for n≤9n\leq 9. Moreover. we prove that it holds for any n,dn,d if it holds for d=3d=3. Then we generalize to the case of Ok,n,dO_{k,n,d}, the kk-osculating variety to Vn,dV_{n,d}, proving, for n=2n=2, a conjecture that relates the defectivity of σs(Ok,n,d)σ_s(O_{k,n,d}) to the Hilbert function of certain sets of fat points in Pn\mathbb{P}^n.
