Proton and neutron exchange as a prelude to fusion at near-barrier energies

Systematic examination of fusion for $^{39,41,45,47}$K + $^{28}$Si and $^{36,44}$Ar + $^{28}$Si provides insight into the impact of neutron and proton exchange on fusion for nuclei at and near the N=20 and N=28 shells. Comparison of the reduced excitation functions reveals a marked difference between the behavior of open-shell and closed-shell systems. While coupled channels calculations provide a good description for the closed-shell nuclei they significantly under-predict the fusion cross-section for open-shell nuclei. The observed trends are examined in the context of a potential energy surface, including shell effects, and multi-nucleon exchange with consideration of Pauli-blocking.

Charged particle track reconstruction with S$π$RIT Time Projection Chamber

In this paper, we present a software framework, S$π$RITROOT, which is capable of track reconstruction and analysis of heavy-ion collision events recorded with the S$π$RIT time projection chamber. The track-fitting toolkit GENFIT and the vertex reconstruction toolkit RAVE are applied to a box-type detector system. A pattern recognition algorithm which performs helix track finding and handles overlapping pulses is described. The performance of the software is investigated using experimental data obtained at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Facility (RIBF) at RIKEN. This work focuses on data from $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn collision events with beam energy of 270 AMeV. Particle identification is established using $\left<dE/dx\right>$ and magnetic rigidity, with pions, hydrogen isotopes, and helium isotopes.

Novel technique to extract experimental symmetry free energy information of nuclear matter

A new method of accessing information on the symmetry free energy from yields of fragments produced in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions is proposed. Furthermore, by means of quantum fluctuation analysis techniques, correlations between extracted symmetry free-energy coefficients with temperature and density were studied. The obtained results are consistent with those of commonly used isoscaling techniques.

Density determinations in heavy ion collisions

The experimental determination of freeze-out temperatures and densities from the yields of light elements emitted in heavy ion collisions is discussed. Results from different experimental approaches are compared with those of model calculations carried out with and without the inclusion of medium effects. Medium effects become of relevance for baryon densities above $\approx 5 \times 10^{-4}$ fm$^{-3}$. A quantum statistical (QS) model incorporating medium effects is in good agreement with the experimentally derived results at higher densities. A densitometer based on calculated chemical equilibrium constants is proposed.

Critical Scaling of Two-component Systems from Quantum Fluctuations

The thermodynamics of excited nuclear systems allows one to explore the second-order phase transition in a two-component quantum mixture. Temperatures and densities are derived from quantum fluctuations of fermions. The pressures are determined from the grand partition function of Fisher's model. Critical scaling of observables is found for systems which differ in neutron to proton concentrations thus constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter. The derived critical exponent β= 0.35 \pm 0.01, belongs to the liquid-gas universality class. The critical compressibility factor Pc /ρc Tc increases with increasing neutron number.

Experimental determination of the quasi-projectile mass with measured neutrons

The investigation of the isospin dependence of multifragmentation reactions relies on precise reconstruction of the fragmenting source. The criteria used to assign free emitted neutrons, detected with the TAMU Neutron Ball, to the quasi-projectile source are investigated in the framework of two different simulation codes. Overall and source-specific detection efficiencies for multifragmentation events are found to be model independent. The equivalence of the two different methods used to assign experimentally detected charged particles and neutrons to the emitting source is shown. The method used experimentally to determine quasi-projectile emitted free neutron multiplicity is found to be reasonably accurate and sufficiently precise as to allow for the study of well-defined quasi-projectile sources.

Systematic study of symmetry energy within the SMM picture of multifragmentation

A systematic study on the effect of secondary decay on the symmetry energy coefficient extracted by isoscaling and the recently proposed isobaric yield ratio methods within the Statistical Multifragmentation Model is performed. The correlations between the input symmetry energy coefficients and the calculated ones from both primary and secondary fragment yields are analysed. Results for secondary fragments show that the best estimation of the input symmetry energy coefficient within SMM is obtained by the isoscaling method, using the yields of light fragments. A comparison to experimental results is also presented.
