Scattering Cancellation based Cloaking for the Maxwell-Cattaneo Heat Waves

In this work we theoretically propose scattering cancellation-based cloaks for heat waves that obey the Maxwell-Cattaneo equation. The proposed cloaks possess carefully tailored diffusivity to cancel the dipole scattering from the object that they surround, and thus can render a small object invisible in the near and far fields, as demonstrated by full-wave finite-element simulations. Mantle heat cloaking is further analyzed and proposed to simplify the design and bring this cloaking technology one step closer to its practical implementation, with promising applications in nanoelectronics and defense related applications.

Space-time gradient metasurfaces

Metasurfaces characterized by a transverse gradient of local impedance have recently opened exciting directions for light manipulation at the nanoscale. Here we add a temporal gradient to the picture, showing that spatio-temporal variations over a surface may largely extend the degree of light manipulation in metasurfaces, and break several of their constraints associated to symmetries. As an example, we synthesize a non-reciprocal classical analogue to electromagnetic induced transparency, opening a narrow window of one-way transmission in an otherwise opaque surface. These properties pave the way to magnetic free, planarized non-reciprocal ultrathin surfaces for free-space isolation.

Active Negative Index Metamaterial Powered by an Electron Beam

A novel active negative index metamaterial that derives its gain from an electron beam is intro- duced. The metamaterial consists of a stack of equidistant parallel metal plates perforated by a periodic array of holes shaped as complementary split-ring resonators. It is shown that this structure supports a negative-index transverse magnetic electromagnetic mode that can resonantly interact with a relativistic electron beam. Such metamaterial can be used as a coherent radiation source or a particle accelerator.
