Magnetic Field tuning of low energy spin dynamics in the single-atomic magnet Li$_2$(Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)N

We present a systematic 57Fe-Moessbauer study on highly diluted Fe centers in Li2(Li1-xFex)N single-crystals as a function of temperature and magnetic field applied transverse and longitudinal with respect to the single-ion anisotropy axis. Below 30 K the Fe centers exhibit a giant magnetic hyperfine field of E_A = 70.25(2)T parallel to the axis of strongest electric field gradient Vzz = -154.0(1) V/A2. Fluctuations of the magnetic hyperfine field are observed between 50K and 300K and described by the Blume two-level relaxation model. From the temperature dependence of the uctuation rate an Orbach spin-lattice relaxation process is deduced. An Arrhenius analysis yields a single thermal activation barrier of E_A = 570(6)K and an attempt frequency nu_0 = 309(10) GHz. Moessbauer spectroscopy studies with applied transverse magnetic fields up to 5T reveal a large increase of the uctuation rate by more than one order of magnitude. In longitudinal magnetic fields a splitting of the uctuation rate into two branches is observed consistent with a Zeeman induced modifcation of the energy levels. The experimental observations are qualitatively reproduced by a single-ion effective spin Hamiltonian analysis assuming a Fe1+ d7 charge state with unquenched orbital moment and a J = 7=2 ground state. It is demonstrated that a weak axial single-ion anisotropy D of the order of a few Kelvin can cause a two orders of magnitude larger energy barrier for longitudinal spin fluctuations.

Electron Spin Resonance in a Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Strong-rung Ladder

Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

Acoustic signatures of the phases and phase transitions in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report on measurements of the sound velocity and attenuation in a single crystal of the candidate quantum- spin-ice material Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The acoustic modes couple to the spins magneto-elastically and, hence, carry information about the spin correlations that sheds light on the intricate magnetic phase diagram of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and the nature of spin dynamics in the material. Particularly, we find a pronounced thermal hysteresis in the acoustic data with a concomitant peak in the specific heat indicating a possible first-order phase transition at about $0.17$ K. At low temperatures, the acoustic response to magnetic field saturates hinting at the development of magnetic order. Furthermore, mean-field calculations suggest that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a first-order phase transition from a cooperative paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnet below $T\approx 0.17$ K.

Spin-orbit and impurity scattering in an integrable electron model: Exact results for dynamic correlations

We introduce an integrable model of spin-polarized interacting electrons subject to a spin-conserving spin-orbit interaction. Using Bethe Ansatz and conformal field theory we calculate the exact large-time single-electron and density correlations and find that while the spin-orbit interaction enhances the single-electron Green's function, the density correlations get suppressed. Adding a localized impurity and coupling it to the electrons so that integrability is preserved, the dynamic correlations are found to change significantly after a quantum quench with the impurity interaction switched on suddenly. When the electrons are confined to a periodic structure, the correlations are indifferent to the location of the impurity and only carry an imprint of its intrinsic properties. We conjecture that this unusual feature originates from the integrability of the model.

Ultrasonic investigations of spin-ices Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in and out of equilibrium

We report ultrasound studies of spin-lattice and single-ion effects in the spin-ice materials Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (DTO) and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (HTO) across a broad field range up to 60 T, covering phase transformations, interactions with low-energy magnetic excitations, as well as single-ion effects. In particular, a sharp dip observed in the sound attenuation in DTO at the gas-liquid transition of the magnetic monopoles is explained based on an approach involving negative relaxation processes. Furthermore, quasi-periodic peaks in the acoustic properties of DTO due to non-equilibrium processes are found to be strongly affected by {\em macroscopic} thermal-coupling conditions: the thermal runaway observed in previous studies in DTO can be suppressed altogether by immersing the sample in liquid helium. Crystal-electric-field effects having higher energy scale lead to a renormalization of the sound velocity and sound attenuation at very high magnetic fields. We analyze our observations using an approach based on an analysis of exchange-striction couplings and single-ion effects.

New physics in frustrated magnets: Spin ices, monopoles, etc

During recent years the interest to frustrated magnets has grown considerably. Such systems reveal very peculiar properties which distinguish them from standard paramagnets, magnetically ordered regular systems (like ferro-, ferri-, and antiferromagnets), or spin glasses. In particular great amount of attention has been devoted to the so-called spin ices, in which magnetic frustration together with the large value of the single-ion magnetic anisotropy of a special kind, yield peculiar behavior. One of the most exciting features of spin ices is related to low-energy emergent excitations, which, from many viewpoints can be considered as analogies of Dirac's monopoles. In this article we review the main achievements of theory and experiment in this field of physics.

Possibility of direct observation of edge Majorana modes in quantum chains

Several scenarios for realization of edge Majorana modes in quantum chain systems: spin chains, chains of Josephson junctions, and chains of coupled cavities in quantum optics, are considered. For all these systems excitations can be presented as superpositions of a spinless fermion and a hole, characteristic for Majorana fermion. We discuss the features of our exact solution with respect to possible experiments, in which edge Majorana fermions can be directly observed when studying magnetic, superconducting, and optical characteristics of such systems.

Low temperature ballistic spin transport in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain compound SrCuO2

We report zero and longitudinal magnetic field muon spin relaxation measurements of the spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain material SrCuO2. We find that in a weak applied magnetic field B the spin-lattice relaxation rate follows a power law B^n with n=-0.9(3). This result is temperature independent for 5K < T < 300 K. Within conformal field theory and using the Müller ansatz we conclude ballistic spin transport in SrCuO2.

Intrinsic and extrinsic nonstationary field-driven processes in the spin-ice compound Dy2Ti2O7

Nonequilibrium processes are probed by ultrasound waves in the spin-ice material Dy2Ti2O7 at low temperatures. The sound velocity and the sound attenuation exhibit a number of anomalies versus applied magnetic field for temperatures below the "freezing" temperature of ~500 mK. These robust anomalies can be seen for longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes for different field directions. The anomalies show a broad hysteresis. Most notable are peaks in the sound velocity, which exhibit two distinct regimes: an intrinsic (extrinsic) one in which the data collapse for different sweep rates when plotted as function of field strength (time). We discuss our observations in context of the emergent quasiparticles which govern the low-temperature dynamics of the spin ice.

Magnetic Phase Transitions in the NdFe_3(BO_3)_4 multiferroic

Low temperature studies of the behavior of the sound velocity and attenuation of acoustic modes have been performed on a single crystal NdFe_3(BO_3)_4. Transitions of the magnetic subsystem to the antiferromagnetically ordered state at T_N \approx 30.6 K have been revealed in the temperature behavior of the elastic characteristics. The features in the temperature behavior of elastic characteristics of the neodymium ferroborate and its behavior in the external magnetic field, applied in the basic plane of the crystal, permit us to suppose that the transition to an incommensurate spiral phase is realized in the system. This phase transition behaves as the first order one. H-T phase diagrams for the cases H \parallel a and H \parallel b have been constructed. The phenomenological theory, which explains observed features, has been developed.

Magnetic crossover and complex excitation spectrum of the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain system alpha-TeVO4

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and Raman scattering investigations of alpha-TeVO4 containing V-O edge-sharing chains. These chains promote a system of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating exchange chains with pronounced spin frustration. The magnetic susceptibility and Raman scattering evidence a crossover at T* = 85 K with different slopes of the reciprocal susceptibility and a magnetic phase transition into a long-range-ordered state at Tc = 16 K. From Raman scattering data a strong mutual coupling between lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom is deduced. A comparison to model calculations and prior Raman scattering on other chain systems yield a plausible interpretation of the microscopic mechanism for the crossover behavior.
