Limit on Higgs boson trilinear self-coupling in coupled technicolor models

The trilinear self-coupling of the Higgs boson, in a theory in which this boson is composite, is compared to the experimental bound of this quantity obtained by the CMS experiment. In the case of a model where technicolor (TC) is coupled to QCD, we find that the experimental result already constrain the dynamics of the theory, which is represented by an expression of the technifermion self-energy ($Σ_{tc}$) typical of technicolor coupled models, and function of the dynamically generated technifermion mass and two other parameters that describe the technifermion dynamical mass momentum dependence. The limits imposed on this dynamics allow us to make a simple determination of pseudo-Goldstone boson masses that appear in these theories, indicating that these bosons may be expected to be quite massive.

Exclusive production of pions and the pion distribution amplitude

Considering, as a limit case, an approximately flat pion distribution amplitude, which is determined from the hardest, in momentum space, solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pion wave function, we compute the pion transition form factor $F_{πγγ^{*}}(Q^{2})$ and the pion form factor $F_π(Q^2)$, taking into account the LO as well as NLO form of the hard coefficient function entering the leading-twist factorization formula. We also compute the exclusive photoproduction of pions pairs at high energies, $γγ\to π^{+}π^{-}$, where perturbative QCD can be used to compute the hard scattering matrix elements. We verify that the existent data for exclusive pion production can be reasonably described as a function of such flat distribution amplitude.

Fermion mass splitting in the technicolor coupled scenario

We discuss fermion mass generation in unified models where QCD and technicolor (or any two strongly interacting theories) have their Schwinger-Dyson equations coupled. In this case the technicolor (TC) and QCD self-energies are modified in comparison with the behavior observed in the isolated theories. In these models the pseudo-Goldstone boson masses are much higher than the ones obtained in different contexts, and phenomenological signals, except from a light scalar composite boson, will be quite difficult to be observed at present collider energies. The most noticeable fact of these models is how the mass splitting between the different ordinary fermions is generated. We discuss how a necessary horizontal (or family) symmetry can be implemented in order to generate the mass splitting between fermions of different generations; how the fermionic mass spectrum may be modified due to GUT interactions, as well as how the mass splitting within the same fermionic generation are generated due to electroweak and GUT interactions.

Technicolor coupled models

When technicolor (TC), QCD, extended technicolor (ETC) and other interactions become coupled through their different Schwinger-Dyson equations, the solution of these equations are modified compared to those of the isolated equations. The change in the self-energies is similar to that obtained in the presence of four-fermion interactions, but without their ad hoc inclusion in the theory. In this case the TC and QCD self-energies decrease logarithmically with the momenta, which allows us to build models where ETC boson masses can be pushed to very high energies, and do not lead to undesirable flavor changing interactions. Viable TC models may be built along this line including a necessary horizontal symmetry. The different fermionic mass scales are dictated by the different strong interactions. Pseudo-Goldstone bosons acquire large masses in this class of models.

$R_{e^+ e^-}$ and an effective QCD charge

We consider the electron-positron annihilation process into hadrons $R_{e^+e^-}$ up to $\mathcal{O}(α_{s}^{3})$ and we adopt the smearing method suggest by Poggio, Quinn and Weinberg to confront the experimental data with theory. As a theoretical model we use a QCD coupling constant frozen in the low energy regime, where this coupling can be parameterised in terms of an effective dynamical gluon mass ($m_g$) which is determined through Schwinger-Dyson equations. In order to find the best fit between experimental data and theory we perform a $χ^2$ study, that, within the uncertainties of the approach, has a minimum value when $m_g/Λ_{QCD}$ is in the range $1.2 \, - \, 1.4$. These values are in agreement with other phenomenological determinations of this ratio and lead to an infrared effective charge $α_s(0) \approx 0.7$. We comment how this effective charge may affect the global duality mass scale that indicates the frontier between perturbative and non-perturbative physics.

Anomalous mass dimension of multi-flavor QCD

Models of strongly interacting theories with a large mass anomalous dimension ($γ_m$) provide an interesting possibility for the dynamical origin of the electroweak symmetry breaking. A laboratory for these models is QCD with many flavors, which may present a non-trivial fixed point associated to a conformal region. Studies based on conformal field theories and on Schwinger-Dyson equations have suggested the existence of bounds on the mass anomalous dimension at the fixed points of these models. In this note we discuss $γ_m$ values of multi-flavor QCD exhibiting a non-trivial fixed point and affected by relevant four-fermion interactions.

Schwinger-Dyson approach and its application to generate a light composite scalar

We discuss the possibility of generating a light composite scalar boson, in a scenario that we may generically call Technicolor, or in any variation of a strongly interacting theory, where by light we mean a scalar composite mass about one order of magnitude below the characteristic scale of the strong theory. Instead of most of the studies about a composite Higgs boson, which are based on effective Lagrangians, we consider this problem in the framework of non-perturbative solutions of the fermionic Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations. We study a range of mechanisms proposed during the recent years to form such light composite boson, and verify that such possibility seems to be necessarily associated to a fermionic self-energy that decreases slowly with the momentum.

Light composite scalar boson from a see-saw mechanism in two-scale TC models

We consider the possibility of a light composite scalar boson arising from mass mixing between a relatively light and heavy scalar singlets in a see-saw mechanism expected to occur in two-scale Technicolor (TC) models. A light composite scalar boson can be generated when the TC theory features two technifermions species in different representations, $R_1$ and $R_2$, under a single technicolor gauge group, with characteristic scales $Λ_1$ and $Λ_2$. We determine the final composite scalar fields, $Φ_1$ and $Φ_2$, effective theory using the effective potential for composite operators approach. To generate a light composite scalar it is enough to have a walking (or quasi-conformal) behavior just for one of the technifermions representations.

QCD chiral symmetry restoration with a large number of quarks in a model with a confining propagator and dynamically massive gluons

Considering a QCD chiral symmetry breaking model where the gap equation contains an effective confining propagator and a dressed gluon propagator with a dynamically generated mass, we verify that the chiral symmetry is restored for a large number of quarks $n_{f}\approx 7-13$. We discuss the uncertainty in the results, that is related to the determination of the string tension ($K_{F}$), appearing in the confining propagator, and the effective gluon mass ($m_{g}$) at large $n_{f}$.

Scalar coupling evolution in a non-perturbative QCD resummation scheme

We compute the Standard Model scalar coupling ($λ$) evolution in a particular QCD resummation scheme, where the QCD coupling becomes infrared finite due to the presence of a dynamically generated gluon mass, leading to the existence of a non-perturbative infrared fixed point. We discuss how this scheme can be fixed taking recourse to phenomenological considerations in the infrared region. The QCD $β$ function associated to this non-perturbative coupling when introduced into the SM renormalization group equations increases the $λ$ values at high energies.

Chiral transition of fundamental and adjoint quarks

The chiral symmetry breaking transition of quarks in the fundamental and adjoint representation is studied in a model where the gap equation contains two contributions, one containing a confining propagator and another corresponding to the exchange of one-dressed dynamically massive gluons. When quarks are in the fundamental representation the confinement effect dominates the chiral symmetry breaking while the gluon exchange is suppressed due to the dynamical gluon mass effect in the propagator and coupling constant. In this case the chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures are approximately the same. For quarks in the adjoint representation, due to the larger Casimir eigenvalue, the gluon exchange is operative and the chiral transition happens at a larger temperature than the deconfinement one.

Limit on the pion distribution amplitude

The pion distribution amplitude (DA) can be related to the fundamental QCD Green's functions as a function of the quark self-energy and the quark-pion vertex, which in turn are associated with the pion wave function through the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Considering the extreme hard asymptotic behavior in momentum space allowed for a pseudoscalar wave function, which is limited by its normalization condition, we compute the pion DA and its second moment. From the resulting amplitude, representing the field theoretical upper limit on the DA behavior, we calculate the photon-pion transition form factor $F_{πγγ^{\ast}}(Q^{2})$. The resulting upper limit on the pion transition form factor is compared with existing data published by CLEO, BaBar and Belle collaborations.

Non-perturbative fixed points and renormalization group improved effective potential

The stability conditions of a renormalization group improved effective potential have been discussed in the case of scalar QED and QCD with a colorless scalar. We calculate the same potential in these models assuming the existence of non-perturbative fixed points associated to a conformal phase. In the case of scalar QED the barrier of instability found previously is barely displaced as we approach the fixed point, and in the case of QCD with a colorless scalar not only the barrier is changed but the local minimum of the potential is also changed.

A 125 GeV Scalar Boson and SU(N_{TC})\otimes SU(3)_{{}_{L}}\otimes U(1)_{{}_{X}} models

We verify that SU(N)_{{}_{TC}}\otimes SU(3)_{{}_{L}}\otimes U(1)_{{}_{X}} models, where the gauge symmetry breaking is totally dynamical and promoted by the non-Abelian technicolor (TC) group and the strong Abelian interactions, are quite constrained by the LHC data. The theory contains a T quark self-energy involving the mixing between the neutral gauge bosons, which introduces the coupling between the light and heavy composite scalar bosons of the model. We determine the lightest scalar boson mass for these models from an effective action for composite operators, assuming details about the dynamics of the strong interaction theories. Comparing the value of this mass with the ATLAS and CMS observation of a new boson with a mass M_ϕ \sim 125GeV and considering the lower bound determined by the LHC Collaborations on the heavy neutral gauge boson (Z^\prime) present in these models, we can establish constraints on the possible models. For example, if SU(N)_{{}_{TC}}\equiv SU(2)_{{}_{TC}}, with technifermions in the fundamental representation, the model barely survives the confrontation with the LHC data.

Aspects of a dynamical gluon mass approach to elastic hadron scattering at LHC

We discuss how the main features of the recent LHC data on elastic scattering can be described by a QCD-inspired formalism with a dynamical infrared mass scale. For this purpose new developments on a dynamical gluon mass approach are reported, with emphasis on a method to estimate uncertainty bounds in the predictions for the high-energy scattering observables. We investigate the effects due to the correlations among the fixed and free parameters involved and show that the band of predictions are consistent with the recent data from the TOTEM experiment, including the forward quantities and the differential cross section up to the dip position.

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in a Minimal 3-3-1 Model

The gauge symmetry breaking in some versions of 3-3-1 models can be implemented dynamically because at the scale of a few TeVs the $U(1)_X$ coupling constant becomes strong. In this work we consider the dynamical symmetry breaking in a minimal $SU(3)_{{}_{TC}}\times SU(3)_{{}_{L}}\times U(1)_{X}$ model, where we propose a new scheme to cancel the chiral anomalies, including two-index symmetric (6) technifermions, which incorporates naturally the walking behavior in the TC sector. The composite scalar content of the model is minimal and all the symmetry breaking is implemented by a multiplet of technifermions. The choice of TC representations not only provide the anomaly cancellation with a walking behavior, but is crucial to promote the model's full dynamical symmetry breaking. We consider the dynamical generation of technigluon masses and, depending on the 3-3-1 symmetry breaking scale ($μ_{331}$), we verify that the technigluon mass is strongly linked to the $Z'$ mass scale, for instance, if $μ_{331}= 1TeV$, we have $M_{{}_{Z'}} > 1$ TeV only if $M_{{}_{TG}} < 350GeV$.

How confinement may affect technicolor?

Confinement has been introduced into the quark gap equation, as proposed by Cornwall, as a possible solution to the problem of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD with dynamically massive gluons. We argue that the same mechanism can be applied for technicolor with dynamically massive technigluons. Within this approach both theories develop a hard self-energy dynamics, resulting from an effective four-fermion interaction, which does not lead to the known technicolor phenomenological problems. We outline a quite general type of technicolor model within this proposal that may naturally explain the masses of different fermion generations.

Testing parameters in an eikonalized dynamical gluon mass model

In the framework of a dynamical gluon mass model recently developed, we investigate the effects of two essential parameters in the description of elastic $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ data at high energies: the soft Pomeron intercept and the dynamical gluon mass. By considering relevant numerical intervals for both parameters and fits to the experimental data up to 1.8 TeV, with good statistical results, we discuss the predictions of the physical quantities at the LHC energies (7 and 14 TeV). We conclude that these quantities are sensitive to those variations and the predictions are correlated with the intervals considered for both parameters. This conclusion puts limits on the reliability of QCD inspired models predictions at the LHC energies, mainly those models with ad hoc fixed values for the mass scale and the Pomeron intercept.

Chiral symmetry breaking in QCD-like gauge theories with a confining propagator and dynamical gauge boson mass generation

We study chiral symmetry breaking in QCD-like gauge theories introducing a confining effective propagator, as proposed recently by Cornwall, and considering the effect of dynamical gauge boson mass generation. The effective confining propagator has the form $1/(k^2+m^2)^2$ and we study the bifurcation equation finding limits on $m$ below which a satisfactory fermion mass solution is generated. Since the coupling constant and gauge boson propagator are damped in the infrared, due to the presence of dynamically massive gauge bosons, the major part of the chiral breaking is only due to the confining propagator. We study the asymptotic behavior of the gap equation containing confinement and massive gauge boson exchange, and find that the symmetry breaking can be approximated at some extent by an effective four-fermion interaction generated by the confining propagator. We compute some QCD chiral parameters as a function of $m$, finding values compatible with the experimental data. Within this approach we expect that lattice simulations should not see large differences between the confinement and chiral symmetry breaking scales independent of the fermionic representation and we find a simple approximate relation between the fermion condensate and dynamical mass for a given representation as a function of the parameters appearing in the effective confining propagator.

Chiral symmetry breaking with a confining propagator and dynamically massive gluons

Chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is studied introducing a confining effective propagator, as proposed recently by Cornwall, and considering the effect of dynamically massive gluons. The effective confining propagator has the form $1/(k^2+m^2)^2$ and we study the bifurcation equation finding limits on the parameter $m$ below which a satisfactory fermion mass solution is generated. Since the coupling constant and gluon propagator are damped in the infrared, due to the presence of a dynamical gluon mass, the major part of the chiral breaking is only due to the confining propagator and related to the low momentum region of the gap equation. We study the asymptotic behavior of the gap equation containing this confinement effect and massive gluon exchange, and find that the symmetry breaking can be approximated by an effective four-fermion interaction generated by the confining propagator. We compute some QCD chiral parameters as a function of $m$, finding values compatible with the experimental data. We find a simple approximate relation between the fermion condensate and dynamical mass for a given representation as a function of the parameters appearing in the effective confining propagator.

QCD effective charge and the structure function $F_{2}$ at small-$x$

We study infrared contributions to the QCD description of the HERA data on the structure function $F_{2}$ within the \textit{generalized} DAS approximation. We argue that this approximation is a natural one and consistent with the phenomenon of dynamical mass generation in QCD. The investigation is performed at next-to-leading order by using the leading-twist expansion of $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})$ and by adopting an effective charge whose finite infrared behavior is constrained by a dynamical gluon mass. We propose one ansatz for the behavior of this effective coupling beyond leading order. The dependence of the experimental data on the infrared value of the effective charge is used in order to study the asymptotic behavior of the running gluon mass. The deep inelastic structure function $F_{2}$ obtained in this approach shows very good agreement with the experimental data.

Deciphering the minimum of energy of some walking technicolor models

There are quasi-conformal theories, like the Minimal and Ultraminimal Technicolor models, which may break dynamically the gauge symmetry of the Standard Model and at the same time are compatible with electroweak precision data. The main characteristic of this type of models is their fermionic content in one or more higher dimensional representations, therefore it is not immediate to know which model leads to the most attractive channel or the minimum vacuum energy state. We discuss the effective potential for composite operators for these models, verifying that their vacuum energy values are different, with the Ultraminimal model having a deeper minimum of energy.

Nonleptonic $B$ meson decays in collinear pQCD at twist-3: Effects of dynamical masses of gluons and quarks

We compute the amplitudes for non-leptonic annihilation decays of $B$ mesons into two particles within the pQCD collinear approach. The end point divergences are regulated with the help of an infrared finite gluon propagator characterized by a non-perturbative dynamical gluon mass consistent with recent lattice simulations. The divergences at twist-3 are regulated by a dynamical quark mass. Our results fit quite well the existent data of $B^0\to D_s^-K^+$ and $B^0\to D_s^{-*}\bar{K}^+$ for the expected range of dynamical gluon masses. We also make predictions for the rare decays $\bar{B}^0\to K^-K^+$, $\bar{B}^0_s\to π^-π^+,π^0π^0$, $B^+\to D_s^{(*)+}\bar{K}^0$, $B^0\to D_s^{\pm(*)} K^\mp$ and $B_s^0\to D^{\pm(*)} π^\mp, D^0π^0$.

Scalar bosons in Minimal and Ultraminimal Technicolor: Masses, trilinear couplings and widths

We compute masses, trilinear self-couplings and decay widths into weak bosons of the scalar composite bosons in the case of the Minimal and Ultraminimal technicolor models. The masses, computed via the Bethe-Salpeter equation, turn out to be light and the trilinear couplings smaller than the one that would be expected when compared to a fundamental Standard Model scalar boson with the same mass. The decay widths into electroweak bosons of the Ultraminimal model scalars bosons are much smaller than the one of the Minimal model.

Vacuum energy as a c-function for theories with dynamically generated masses

We argue that in asymptotically free non-Abelian gauge theories possessing the phenomenon of dynamical mass generation the $β$ function is negative up to a value of the coupling constant that corresponds to a non-trivial fixed point, in agreement with recent AdS/QCD analysis. This fixed point happens at the minimum of the vacuum energy ($Ω$), which, as a characteristic of theories with dynamical mass generation, has the properties of a c-function.

Mass and width of a composite Higgs boson

The scalar Higgs boson mass in a Technicolor model was obtained by Elias and Scadron with the analysis of an homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), however it was performed before the most recent developments of walking gauge theories. It was not observed in their work that dynamically generated technifermion mass may vary according to the theory dynamics that forms the scalar bound state. This will be done in this work and we also call attention that their calculation must change to take into account the normalization condition of the BSE. We compute the width of the composite boson and show how the gauge group and fermion content of a technicolor theory can be inferred from the measurement of the mass and width of the scalar boson.

Non-leptonic annihilation decays of B mesons with a natural infrared cutoff

Within the QCD factorization approach we compute the amplitudes for annihilation channels of B mesons decays into final states containing two pseudoscalar particles. These decays may be plagued by effects like non-perturbative physics or breaking of the factorization hypothesis and imply, at some extent, the introduction of an infrared cutoff in the calculation of amplitudes. We compute the decays with the help of infrared finite gluon propagators and coupling constants that were obtained in different solutions of the QCD Schwinger-Dyson equations. These solutions yield a natural cutoff for the amplitudes, and we argue that a systematic study of these B decays may provide a test for the QCD infrared behavior.

QCD phenomenology with infrared finite SDE solutions

Recent progress in the solution of Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDE), as well as lattice simulation of pure glue QCD, indicate that the gluon propagator and coupling constant are infrared (IR) finite. We discuss how this non-perturbative information can be introduced into the QCD perturbative expansion in a consistent scheme, showing some examples of tree level hadronic reactions that successfully fit the experimental data with the gluon propagator and coupling constant depending on a dynamically generated gluon mass. This infrared mass scale acts as a natural cutoff and eliminates some of the ad hoc parameters usually found in perturbative QCD calculations. The application of these IR finite Green's functions in the case of higher order terms of the perturbative expansion is commented.

Phenomenology of infrared finite gluon propagator and coupling constant

We report on some recent solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the infrared behavior of the gluon propagator and coupling constant, discussing their differences and proposing that these different behaviors can be tested through hadronic phenomenology. We discuss which kind of phenomenological tests can be applied to the gluon propagator and coupling constant, how sensitive they are to the infrared region of momenta and what specific solution is preferred by the experimental data.

A dynamical mechanism to explain the top-bottom quark mass hierarchy

We discuss the mass splitting between the the top and bottom quarks in a technicolor scenario. The model proposed here contains a left-right electroweak gauge group. An extended technicolor group and mirror fermions are introduced. The top-bottom quark mass splitting turns out to be intimately connected to the breaking of the left-right gauge symmetry. Weak isospin violation occurs within the experimental limits.

The origin of the first and third generation fermion masses in a technicolor scenario

We argue that the masses of the first and third fermionic generations, which are respectively of the order of a few MeV up to a hundred GeV, are originated in a dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism leading to masses of the order $αμ$, where $α$ is a small coupling constant and $μ$, in the case of the first fermionic generation, is the scale of the dynamical quark mass ($\approx 250$ MeV). For the third fermion generation $μ$ is the value of the dynamical techniquark mass ($\approx 250$ GeV). We discuss how this possibility can be implemented in a technicolor scenario, and how the mass of the intermediate generation is generated.

Hadronic physics in peripheral heavy ion collisions

We discuss the production of hadronic resonances in very peripheral heavy ion collisions, where the ions collide with impact parameter larger than twice the nuclear radius and remain intact after the collision. We compare the resonance production through two-photon and double Pomeron exchange, showing that when we impose the condition for a peripheral interaction the $γγ$ process dominates over the Pomeron interaction, due to the short range propagation of this last one. We also discuss the observation of light resonances through the subprocess $γγ\to R \to γγ$, which is a clean signal for glueball candidates as well as one way to check the existence of a possible scalar $σ$ meson.

Compatibility of a model for the QCD-Pomeron and chiral-symmetry breaking phenomenologies

The phenomenology of a QCD-Pomeron model based on the exchange of a pair of non-perturbative gluons, i.e. gluon fields with a finite correlation length in the vacuum, is studied in comparison with the phenomenology of QCD chiral symmetry breaking, based on non-perturbative solutions of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the quark propagator including these non-perturbative gluon effects. We show that these models are incompatible, and point out some possibles origins of this problem.
