Flows in nonequilibrium quantum systems and quantum photosynthesis

A three level quantum system interacting with nonequilibrium environment is investigated. The stationary state of the system is found (both for non-coherent and coherent environment) and relaxation and decoherence to the stationary state is described. The stationary state of the system will be non-equilibrium and will generate flows. We describe the dependence of the flows on the state of the environment. We also discuss application of this model to the problem of quantum photosynthesis, in particular, to description of flows of excitons and generation of excitonic coherences.

Optimized multibeam configuration for observation of QED cascades

QED cascades in intense electromagnetic field can occur if the dynamical quantum parameter $χ$ of a seed electron, which in Compton units coincides with the electron proper acceleration, attains the order of unity. We derive general expression for $χ$ of an initially slow electron in an arbitrary electromagnetic field for a time range $t\ll 1/ω$, where $ω$ is the field carrier frequency. Using this formula, we consider a special field configuration of multiple colliding focused laser beams and optimize it to provide cascade development at laser power below $10$ PW and intensity of the order of $10^{23}$W/cm$^2$. Such parameters of the beams will be obtained with a new generation of laser facilities, particularly the ELI Beamlines, in the coming years.

Collapse and revival of electromagnetic cascades in focused intense laser pulses

We consider interaction of a high-energy electron beam with two counterpropagating femtosecond laser pulses. Nonlinear Compton scattering and electron-positron pair production by the emitted photons result in development of an electromagnetic "shower-type" cascade, which however collapses rather quickly due to energy losses by secondary particles. Nevertheless, the laser field accelerates the low-energy electrons and positrons trapped in the focal region, thus giving rise to development of electromagnetic cascade of another type ("avalanche-type"). This effect of cascade collapse and revival can be observed at the electron beam energy of the order of several GeV and intensity of the colliding laser pulses of the level of $10^{24}$W/cm$^2$. This means that it can be readily observed at the novel laser facilities which are either planned for the nearest future, or are already under construction. The proposed experimental setup provides the most realistic and promissory way to observe the "avalanche-type" cascades.

Pair creation by collision of intense laser pulse with high-frequency photon beam

We consider pair creation by collision of a couple of counterpropagating electromagnetic pulses with arbitrary frequency ratio, mostly in the context of setup with collision of optical and coherent hard X- (or gamma-) ray pulses. This problem is non-perturbative and in general does not admit exact analytical solutions. We discuss several known approaches according to the ratio of the parameters. Certain regions of the parameter space are not covered by the existing approximations or models. We present a new simplified exactly solvable model with one of the pulses being a delta-pulse. This model partially fills the yet unexplored gap in the space of parameters. The shape of the momentum distribution of the created particles in such a model is discussed. Even though the model may not have immediate implications for the forthcoming experiments, it can still provide some hints for better understanding of the fully non-perturbative regime and vacuum instability in QED interactions of extremely strong and short laser pulses.
