Online Bayesian Optimization for a Recoil Mass Separator

The SEparator for CApture Reactions (SECAR) is a next-generation recoil separator system at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) designed for the direct measurement of capture reactions on unstable nuclei in inverse kinematics. To maximize the performance of this system, stringent requirements on the beam alignment to the central beam axis and on the ion-optical settings need to be achieved. These can be difficult to attain through manual tuning by human operators without potentially leaving the system in a sub-optimal and irreproducible state. In this work, we present the first development of online Bayesian optimization with a Gaussian process model to tune an ion beam through a nuclear astrophysics recoil separator. We show that this method achieves small incoming angular deviations (\textless 1 mrad) in an efficient and reproducible manner that is at least three times faster than standard hand-tuning. Additionally, we present a Bayesian method for experimental optimization of the ion optics, and show that it validates the nominal theoretical ion-optical settings of the device, and improves the mass separation by 32\% for some beams.

Measurement of the 18^{18}Ne(α,pα,p)21^{21}Na reaction with ANASEN at Ec.m.=E_{c.m.} = 2.5-4 MeV

The 18^{18}Ne(α,pα,p)21^{21}Na reaction plays a significant role in Type-I X-ray bursts. It is a major path in the breakout from the hot-CNO cycles to the synthesis of heavier elements in the αpαp-- and rprp-processes. An experiment to determine the cross section of this reaction was performed with the ANASEN active-target detector system, determining the cross section at energies between 2.5 and 4 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. The measured cross sections for reactions populating the ground state in 21^{21}Na are consistent with results obtained from the time-inverse reaction, but significantly lower than the previously published experimental data of direct measurements. The total cross sections are also compared with those derived from indirect methods and statistical-model calculations. This experiment establishes a new experimental data set on the excitation function of the 18^{18}Ne(α,pα,p)21^{21}Na reaction, revealing the significance of the excited states' contributions to the total reaction cross section and allowing to separate the contribution of the (α,2p)(α,2p) reaction. The impact of the measured cross section on thermal reaction rates is discussed.

Spallation-altered accreted compositions for X-ray bursts: Impact on ignition conditions and burst ashes

Dependable predictions of the X-ray burst ashes and light curves require a stringent constraint on the composition of the accreted material as an input parameter. Lower metallicity models are generally based on a metal deficient donor and all metals are summed up in CNO abundances or solar metal distribution is assumed. In this work, we study the alteration of accreted composition due to spallation in the atmosphere of accreting neutron stars considering a cascading destruction process. We find that the inclusion of the cascading process brings the replenishment of CNO elements and overall survival probability is higher compared to isolated destruction of CNO elements. Spallation model provides the distribution of metals as a function of mass accretion rate. Multi-zone X-ray burst models calculated with reduced metallicities have enhanced abundances for high-mass nuclei in X-ray burst ashes. The increased metallicity due to the replenishment of CNO elements changes the composition of burst ashes compared to lower metallicity conditions. This will modify the thermal and compositional structure of accreted neutron star crusts.
