Tiling a rectangle with the fewest squares

preprint1994arXivOpen access

Abstract

We show that a square-tiling of a p×qp\times q rectangle, where pp and qq are relatively prime integers, has at least log⁡2p\log_2p squares. If q>pq>p we construct a square-tiling with less than q/p+Clog⁡pq/p+C\log p squares of integer size, for some universal constant CC.
