On Hilbert's irreducibility theorem

Abstract

In this paper we obtain new quantitative forms of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem. In particular, we show that if f(X,T1,…,Ts)f(X, T_1, \ldots, T_s) is an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients, having Galois group GG over the function field Q(T1,…,Ts)\mathbb{Q}(T_1, \ldots, T_s), and KK is any subgroup of GG, then there are at most Of,ε(Hs−1+∣G/K∣−1+ε)O_{f, \varepsilon}(H^{s-1+|G/K|^{-1}+\varepsilon}) specialisations t∈Zs\mathbf{t} \in \mathbb{Z}^s with ∣t∣≤H|\mathbf{t}| \le H such that the resulting polynomial f(X)f(X) has Galois group KK over the rationals.
