Increasing paths in edge-ordered graphs: the hypercube and random graphs

preprint2015arXivOpen access

Abstract

An edge-ordering of a graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) is a bijection ϕ:E→{1,2,...,∣E∣}ϕ:E\to\{1,2,...,|E|\}. Given an edge-ordering, a sequence of edges P=e1,e2,...,ekP=e_1,e_2,...,e_k is an increasing path if it is a path in GG which satisfies ϕ(ei)<ϕ(ej)ϕ(e_i)<ϕ(e_j) for all i<ji<j. For a graph GG, let f(G)f(G) be the largest integer ℓ\ell such that every edge-ordering of GG contains an increasing path of length ℓ\ell. The parameter f(G)f(G) was first studied for G=KnG=K_n and has subsequently been studied for other families of graphs. This paper gives bounds on ff for the hypercube and the random graph G(n,p)G(n,p).
