Convex polynomial approximation in RdR^d with Freud weights

preprint2014arXivOpen access

Abstract

We show that for multivariate Freud-type weights Wα(x)=exp⁡(−∣x∣α)W_α(x)=\exp(-|x|^α), α>1α>1, any convex function ff on RdR^d satisfying fWα∈Lp(Rd)fW_α\in L_p(R^d) if 1≤p<∞1\le p<\infty, or lim⁡∣x∣→∞f(x)Wα(x)=0\lim_{|x|\to\infty}f(x)W_α(x)=0 if p=∞p=\infty, can be approximated in the weighted norm by a sequence PnP_n of algebraic polynomials convex on RdR^d such that ∥(f−Pn)Wα∥Lp(Rd)→0\|(f-P_n)W_α\|_{L_p(R^d)}\to0 as n→∞n\to\infty. This extends the previously known result for d=1d=1 and p=∞p=\infty obtained by the first author to higher dimensions and integral norms using a completely different approach.
