Compactness and Bubbles Analysis for 1/2-harmonic Maps

preprint2012arXivOpen access

Abstract

In this paper we study compactness and quantization properties of sequences of 1/2-harmonic maps uk ⁣:R→Sm−1u_k\colon\R\to {\cal{S}}^{m-1} such that ∣uk∣H˙1/2(R,Sm−1)≤C.|u_k|_{\dot H^{1/2}(\R,{\cal{S}}^{m-1})}\le C. More precisely we show that there exist a weak 1/2-harmonic map u∞ ⁣:R→Sm−1u_\infty\colon\R\to {\cal{S}}^{m-1}, a possible empty set a1,...,aℓ{a_1,...,a_\ell} in R\R such that up to subsequences (∣(−Δ)1/4uk∣2⇀∣(−Δ)1/4u∞∣2)dx+∑i=1ℓλiδai,inRadonmeasure,(|(-Δ)^{1/4}u_k|^2 \rightharpoonup |(-Δ)^{1/4}u_{\infty}|^2)dx+\sum_{i=1}^{\ell}λ_i δ_{a_i}, in Radon measure, as k→+∞k\to +\infty, with λi≥0.λ_i\ge 0. The convergence of uku_k to u∞u_\infty is strong in W˙loc1/2,p(R∖a1,...,aℓ)\dot W^{1/2,p}_{loc}(\R\setminus{a_1,...,a_\ell}), for every p≥1.p\ge 1. We quantify the loss of energy in the weak convergence and we show that in the case of non-constant 1/2-harmonic maps with values in S2  {\cal{S}}^2\, one has λi=2πniλ_i=2 πn_i, with nin_i a positive integer.
