A Note on Combinatorial Derivation

Abstract

Given an infinite group GG and a subset AA of GG we let Δ(A)=g∈G:∣gA∩A∣=∞Δ(A) = {g \in G : |gA \cap A| =\infty} (this is sometimes called the combinatorial derivation of AA). A subset AA of GG is called large if there exists a finite subset FF of GG such that FA=GFA=G. We show that given a large set XX, and a decomposition X=A1∪...∪AnX=A_1 \cup ... \cup A_n, there must exist an ii such that Δ(Ai)Δ(A_i) is large. This answers a question of Protasov. We also answer a number of related questions of Protasov.
