Optimisation of Thimble Simulations and Quantum Dynamics of Multiple Fields in Real Time

We apply the Generalised Thimble approach to the computation of exact path integrals and correlators in real-time quantum field theory. We first investigate the details of the numerical implementation and ways of optimizing the algorithm. We subsequently apply the method to an interacting two-field system in 0+1 dimensions, illustrating the scope for addressing realistic physical processes using real-time Generalised Thimble computations.

Electromagnetic Bursts from Mergers of Oscillons in Axion-like Fields

We investigate the bursts of electromagnetic and scalar radiation resulting from the collision, and merger of oscillons made from axion-like particles using 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of the coupled axion-gauge field system. The radiation into photons is suppressed before the merger. However, it becomes the dominant source of energy loss after the merger if a resonance condition is satisfied. Conversely, the radiation in scalar waves is dominant during initial merger phase but suppressed after the merger. The backreaction of scalar and electromagnetic radiation is included in our simulations. We evolve the system long enough to see that the resonant photon production extracts a significant fraction of the initial axion energy, and again falls out of the resonance condition. We provide a parametric understanding of the time, and energy scales involved in the process and discuss observational prospects of detecting the electromagnetic signal.

Quantum tunnelling, real-time dynamics and Picard-Lefschetz thimbles

We follow up the work, where in light of the Picard-Lefschetz thimble approach, we split up the real-time path integral into two parts: the initial density matrix part which can be represented via an ensemble of initial conditions, and the dynamic part of the path integral which corresponds to the integration over field variables at all later times. This turns the path integral into a two-stage problem where, for each initial condition, there exits one and only one critical point and hence a single thimble in the complex space, whose existence and uniqueness are guaranteed by the characteristics of the initial value problem. In this paper, we test the method for a fully quantum mechanical phenomenon, quantum tunnelling in quantum mechanics. We compare the method to solving the Schrödinger equation numerically, and to the classical-statistical approximation, which emerges naturally in a well-defined limit. We find that the Picard-Lefschetz result matches the expectation from quantum mechanics and that, for this application, the classical-statistical approximation does not.

Cold Baryogenesis from first principles in the Two-Higgs Doublet model with Fermions

We present a first-principles numerical computation of the baryon asymmetry in electroweak-scale baryogenesis. For the scenario of Cold Baryogenesis, we consider a one fermion-family reduced CP-violating two Higgs-doublet model, including a classical SU(2)-gauge/two-Higgs sector coupled to one quantum left-handed fermion doublet and two right-handed singlets. Separately, the C(CP) breaking of the two-Higgs potential and the C and P breaking of the gauge-fermion interactions do not provide a baryon asymmetry. Only when combined does baryogenesis occur. Through large-scale computer simulations, we compute the asymmetry for one particularly favourable scalar potential. The numerical signal is at the boundary of what is numerically discernible with the available computer resources, but we tentatively find an asymmetry of $|η|\leq 3.5\times 10^{-7}$.

Structure functions in deep inelastic scattering from gauge/string duality beyond single-hadron final states

We study deep inelastic scattering at large-'t Hooft coupling and finite $x$ from gauge/string duality beyond single-hadron final states which gives the leading large-$N_c$ contribution. Within the supergravity approximation, we calculate the subleading large-$N_c$ contribution by introducing an extra hadron into the final states. We find the contribution from these double-hadron final states will dominate in the Bjorken limit $q^2\rightarrow \infty$ compared with the single-hadron states. We discuss the implications of our results.

Ensemble fermions for electroweak dynamics and the fermion preheating temperature

We refine the implementation of ensemble fermions for the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, introduced previously. We consider the behavior of different observables as the size of the ensemble is increased and show that the dynamics converges for ensemble sizes small enough that simulations of the entire electroweak sector become numerically tractable. We apply the method to the computation of the effective preheating temperature during a fast electroweak transition, relevant for Cold Electroweak Baryogenesis. We find that this temperature is never below 20 GeV, and this in combination with the early results convincingly rules out Standard Model CP-violation as the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Gravitational Waves from Oscillon Preheating

Oscillons are long-lived, localized excitations of nonlinear scalar fields which may be copiously produced during preheating after inflation, leading to a possible oscillon-dominated phase in the early Universe. For example, this can happen after axion monodromy inflation, on which we run our simulations. We investigate the stochastic gravitational wave background associated with an oscillon-dominated phase. An isolated oscillon is spherically symmetric and does not radiate gravitational waves, and we show that the flux of gravitational radiation generated between oscillons is also small. However, a significant stochastic gravitational wave background may be generated during preheating itself (i.e, when oscillons are forming), and in this case the characteristic size of the oscillons is imprinted on the gravitational wave power spectrum, which has multiple, distinct peaks.

Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering Off the "Neutron" From Gauge/String Duality

We investigate deep inelastic scattering off the polarized "neutron" using gauge/string duality. The "neutron" corresponds to a supergravity mode of the neutral dilatino. Through introducing the Pauli interaction term into the action in $\textrm{AdS}_{5}$ space, we calculate the polarized deep inelastic structure functions of the "neutron" in supergravity approximation at large t' Hooft coupling $λ$ and finite $x$ with $λ^{-1/2}\ll x<1$. In comparison with the charged dilatino "proton," which has been obtained in the previous work by Gao and Xiao, we find the structure functions of the "neutron" are power suppressed at the same order as the ones of the "proton." Especially, we find the Burkhardt-Cottingham-like sum rule, which is satisfied in the work by Gao and Xiao, is broken due to the Pauli interaction term. We also illustrate how such a Pauli interaction term can arise naturally from higher dimensional fermion-graviton coupling through the usual Kaluza-Klein reduction.
