Cylinder type and $p$-divisible sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^3$

A set of points $S \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ is called \emph{$p$-divisible} if every affine hyperplane in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ intersects $S$ in $0 \pmod p$ points. The Strong Cylinder Conjecture of Ball asserts that if $S$ is a $p$-divisible set of $p^2$ points in $\mathbb{F}_p^3$, then $S$ is a cylinder. In this paper, we show that every $p$-divisible multiset $S$ is both a $\mathbb{F}_p$-linear and $\mathbb{Z}$-linear combination of characteristic functions of cylinders. In addition, the multisets of size $p^2$ are $\Z$-linear combinations of a plane and weighted differences of parallel lines.

Generalized Outerplanar Turán numbers and maximum number of k-vertex subtrees

We prove an asymptotic result on the maximum number of k-vertex subtrees in binary trees of given order. This problem turns out to be equivalent to determine the maximum number of k+2-cycles in n-vertex outerplanar graphs, thus we settle the generalized outerplanar Turán number for all cycles. We also determine the exponential growth of the generalized outerplanar Turán number of paths Pk as a function of k which implies the order of magnitude of the generalized outerplanar Turán number of arbitrary trees. The bounds are strongly related to the sequence of Catalan numbers.

Steiner triple systems and spreading sets in projective spaces

We address several extremal problems concerning the spreading property of point sets of Steiner triple systems. This property is closely related to the structure of subsystems, as a set is spreading if and only if there is no proper subsystem which contains it. We give sharp upper bounds on the size of a minimal spreading set in a Steiner triple system and show that if all the minimal spreading sets are large then the examined triple system must be a projective space. We also show that the size of a minimal spreading set is not an invariant of a Steiner triple system.

On the balanced upper chromatic number of finite projective planes

In this paper, we study vertex colorings of hypergraphs in which all color class sizes differ by at most one (balanced colorings) and each hyperedge contains at least two vertices of the same color (rainbow-free colorings). For any hypergraph $H$, the maximum number $k$ for which there is a balanced rainbow-free $k$-coloring of $H$ is called the balanced upper chromatic number of the hypergraph. We confirm the conjecture of Araujo-Pardo, Kiss and Montejano by determining the balanced upper chromatic number of the desarguesian projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ for all $q$. In addition, we determine asymptotically the balanced upper chromatic number of several families of non-desarguesian projective planes and also provide a general lower bound for arbitrary projective planes using probabilistic methods which determines the parameter up to a multiplicative constant.

Spreading linear triple systems and expander triple systems

The existence of Steiner triple systems STS(n) of order n containing no nontrivial subsystem is well known for every admissible n. We generalize this result in two ways. First we define the expander property of 3-uniform hypergraphs and show the existence of Steiner triple systems which are almost perfect expanders. Next we define the strong and weak spreading property of linear hypergraphs, and determine the minimum size of a linear triple system with these properties, up to a small constant factor. This property is strongly connected to the connectivity of the structure and of the so-called influence maximization. We also discuss how the results are related to Erdős' conjecture on locally sparse STSs, influence maximization, subsquare-free Latin squares and possible applications in finite geometry.

Triangle areas in line arrangements

A widely investigated subject in combinatorial geometry, originated from Erdős, is the following. Given a point set $P$ of cardinality $n$ in the plane, how can we describe the distribution of the determined distances? This has been generalized in many directions. In this paper we propose the following variants. Consider planar arrangements of $n$ lines. Determine the maximum number of triangles of unit area, maximum area or minimum area, determined by these lines. Determine the minimum size of a subset of these $n$ lines so that all triples determine distinct area triangles. We prove that the order of magnitude for the maximum occurrence of unit areas lies between $Ω(n^2)$ and $O(n^{9/4})$. This result is strongly connected to both additive combinatorial results and Szemerédi--Trotter type incidence theorems. Next we show a tight bound for the maximum number of minimum area triangles. Finally we present lower and upper bounds for the maximum area and distinct area problems by combining algebraic, geometric and combinatorial techniques.

Density version of the Ramsey problem and the directed Ramsey problem

We discuss a variant of the Ramsey and the directed Ramsey problem. First, consider a complete graph on $n$ vertices and a two-coloring of the edges such that every edge is colored with at least one color and the number of bicolored edges $|E_{RB}|$ is given. The aim is to find the maximal size $f$ of a monochromatic clique which is guaranteed by such a coloring. Analogously, in the second problem we consider semicomplete digraph on $n$ vertices such that the number of bi-oriented edges $|E_{bi}|$ is given. The aim is to bound the size $F$ of the maximal transitive subtournament that is guaranteed by such a digraph. Applying probabilistic and analytic tools and constructive methods we show that if $|E_{RB}|=|E_{bi}| = p{n\choose 2}$, ($p\in [0,1)$), then $f, F < C_p\log(n)$ where $C_p$ only depend on $p$, while if $m={n \choose 2} - |E_{RB}| <n^{3/2}$ then $f= Θ(\frac{n^2}{m+n})$. The latter case is strongly connected to Turán-type extremal graph theory.

Dominating sets in projective planes

We describe small dominating sets of the incidence graphs of finite projective planes by establishing a stability result which shows that dominating sets are strongly related to blocking and covering sets. Our main result states that if a dominating set in a projective plane of order $q>81$ is smaller than $2q+2[\sqrt{q}]+2$ (i.e., twice the size of a Baer subplane), then it contains either all but possibly one points of a line or all but possibly one lines through a point. Furthermore, we completely characterize dominating sets of size at most $2q+\sqrt{q}+1$. In Desarguesian planes, we could rely on strong stability results on blocking sets to show that if a dominating set is sufficiently smaller than 3q, then it consists of the union of a blocking set and a covering set apart from a few points and lines.

Avoider-Enforcer star games

In this paper, we study $(1 : b)$ Avoider-Enforcer games played on the edge set of the complete graph on $n$ vertices. For every constant $k\geq 3$ we analyse the $k$-star game, where Avoider tries to avoid claiming $k$ edges incident to the same vertex. We analyse both versions of Avoider-Enforcer games -- the strict and the monotone -- and for each provide explicit winning strategies for both players. We determine the order of magnitude of the threshold biases $f^{mon}_\mathcal{F}$, $f^-_\mathcal{F}$ and $f^+_\mathcal{F}$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is the hypergraph of the game.

On the number of k-dominating independent sets

We study the existence and the number of $k$-dominating independent sets in certain graph families. While the case $k=1$ namely the case of maximal independent sets - which is originated from Erdős and Moser - is widely investigated, much less is known in general. In this paper we settle the question for trees and prove that the maximum number of $k$-dominating independent sets in $n$-vertex graphs is between $c_k\cdot\sqrt[2k]{2}^n$ and $c_k'\cdot\sqrt[k+1]{2}^n$ if $k\geq 2$, moreover the maximum number of $2$-dominating independent sets in $n$-vertex graphs is between $c\cdot 1.22^n$ and $c'\cdot1.246^n$. Graph constructions containing a large number of $k$-dominating independent sets are coming from product graphs, complete bipartite graphs and with finite geometries. The product graph construction is associated with the number of certain MDS codes.

On the number of maximal intersecting k-uniform families and further applications of Tuza's set pair method

We study the function $M(n,k)$ which denotes the number of maximal $k$-uniform intersecting families $F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$. Improving a bound of Balogh at al. on $M(n,k)$, we determine the order of magnitude of $\log M(n,k)$ by proving that for any fixed $k$, $M(n,k) =n^{Θ(\binom{2k}{k})}$ holds. Our proof is based on Tuza's set pair approach. The main idea is to bound the size of the largest possible point set of a cross-intersecting system. We also introduce and investigate some related functions and parameters.

The Density Turán problem

Let $H$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let the blow-up graph $G[H]$ be defined as follows. We replace each vertex $v_i$ of $H$ by a cluster $A_i$ and connect some pairs of vertices of $A_i$ and $A_j$ if $(v_i,v_j)$ was an edge of the graph $H$. As usual, we define the edge density between $A_i$ and $A_j$ as $d(A_i,A_j)=\frac{e(A_i,A_j)}{|A_i||A_j|}.$ We study the following problem. Given densities $γ_{ij}$ for each edge $(i,j)\in E(H)$. Then one has to decide whether there exists a blow-up graph $G[H]$ with edge densities at least $γ_{ij}$ such that one cannot choose a vertex from each cluster so that the obtained graph is isomorphic to $H$, i.e, no $H$ appears as a transversal in $G[H]$. We call $d_{crit}(H)$ the maximal value for which there exists a blow-up graph $G[H]$ with edge densities $d(A_i,A_j)=d_{crit}(H)$ $((v_i,v_j)\in E(H))$ not containing $H$ in the above sense. Our main goal is to determine the critical edge density and to characterize the extremal graphs.

A new approach to constant term identities and Selberg-type integrals

Selberg-type integrals that can be turned into constant term identities for Laurent polynomials arise naturally in conjunction with random matrix models in statistical mechanics. Built on a recent idea of Karasev and Petrov we develop a general interpolation based method that is powerful enough to establish many such identities in a simple manner. The main consequence is the proof of a conjecture of Forrester related to the Calogero--Sutherland model. In fact we prove a more general theorem, which includes Aomoto's constant term identity at the same time. We also demonstrate the relevance of the method in additive combinatorics.
