Low-Cost Architecture and Efficient Pattern Synthesis for Polarimetric Phased Array Based on Polarization Coding Reconfigurable Elements

Polarimetric phased arrays (PPAs) enhance radar target detection and anti-jamming capabilities, but their conventional dual transmit/receive (T/R) channel architecture leads to high cost and system complexity. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a polarization-coding reconfigurable phased array (PCRPA) and associated pattern synthesis techniques, which reduce the channel count while preserving key performance. In the PCRPA, each antenna element connects to a single T/R channel and is equipped with a two-level RF switch, enabling real-time control of its polarization state and subarray grouping. By optimizing both the element polarization codes and the excitation weights, the array can synthesize arbitrarily polarized and dual-polarized beams. Simulation results show that the proposed approach achieves suppressed cross-polarization and comparable sidelobe levels compared to conventional PPAs across a wide scan range, with performance improvements being more pronounced in larger arrays. The inherent channel reduction does, however, incur a trade-off in terms of radiated power and directivity. Experimental validation using an $8\times 8$ X-band array antenna confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system. The PCRPA architecture and the accompanying synthesis methods offer a cost-effective solution for large-scale PPA systems, maintaining sidelobe and polarization control with significantly reduced hardware complexity.

Attention Mechanism Enhanced Kernel Prediction Networks for Denoising of Burst Images

Deep learning based image denoising methods have been extensively investigated. In this paper, attention mechanism enhanced kernel prediction networks (AME-KPNs) are proposed for burst image denoising, in which, nearly cost-free attention modules are adopted to first refine the feature maps and to further make a full use of the inter-frame and intra-frame redundancies within the whole image burst. The proposed AME-KPNs output per-pixel spatially-adaptive kernels, residual maps and corresponding weight maps, in which, the predicted kernels roughly restore clean pixels at their corresponding locations via an adaptive convolution operation, and subsequently, residuals are weighted and summed to compensate the limited receptive field of predicted kernels. Simulations and real-world experiments are conducted to illustrate the robustness of the proposed AME-KPNs in burst image denoising.

Learning Inverse Rendering of Faces from Real-world Videos

In this paper we examine the problem of inverse rendering of real face images. Existing methods decompose a face image into three components (albedo, normal, and illumination) by supervised training on synthetic face data. However, due to the domain gap between real and synthetic face images, a model trained on synthetic data often does not generalize well to real data. Meanwhile, since no ground truth for any component is available for real images, it is not feasible to conduct supervised learning on real face images. To alleviate this problem, we propose a weakly supervised training approach to train our model on real face videos, based on the assumption of consistency of albedo and normal across different frames, thus bridging the gap between real and synthetic face images. In addition, we introduce a learning framework, called IlluRes-SfSNet, to further extract the residual map to capture the global illumination effects that give the fine details that are largely ignored in existing methods. Our network is trained on both real and synthetic data, benefiting from both. We comprehensively evaluate our methods on various benchmarks, obtaining better inverse rendering results than the state-of-the-art.

Peeking into occluded joints: A novel framework for crowd pose estimation

Although occlusion widely exists in nature and remains a fundamental challenge for pose estimation, existing heatmap-based approaches suffer serious degradation on occlusions. Their intrinsic problem is that they directly localize the joints based on visual information; however, the invisible joints are lack of that. In contrast to localization, our framework estimates the invisible joints from an inference perspective by proposing an Image-Guided Progressive GCN module which provides a comprehensive understanding of both image context and pose structure. Moreover, existing benchmarks contain limited occlusions for evaluation. Therefore, we thoroughly pursue this problem and propose a novel OPEC-Net framework together with a new Occluded Pose (OCPose) dataset with 9k annotated images. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations on benchmarks demonstrate that OPEC-Net achieves significant improvements over recent leading works. Notably, our OCPose is the most complex occlusion dataset with respect to average IoU between adjacent instances. Source code and OCPose will be publicly available.

Use of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in Dual-hop relaying

To improve the sum-rate (SR) of the dual-hop relay system, a novel two-stage power allocation scheme with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. In this scheme, after the reception of the superposition coded symbol with a power allocation from the source, the relay node forwards a new superposition coded symbol with another power allocation to the destination. By employing the maximum ratio combination (MRC), the destination jointly decodes the information symbols from the source and the relay. Assuming Rayleigh fading channels, closed-form solution of the ergodic SR at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived and a practical power allocation is also designed for the proposed NOMA scheme. Through numerical results, it is shown that the performance of the proposed scheme is significantly improved compared with the existing work.

Energy-saving Resource Allocation by Exploiting the Context Information

Improving energy efficiency of wireless systems by exploiting the context information has received attention recently as the smart phone market keeps expanding. In this paper, we devise energy-saving resource allocation policy for multiple base stations serving non-real-time traffic by exploiting three levels of context information, where the background traffic is assumed to occupy partial resources. Based on the solution from a total energy minimization problem with perfect future information,a context-aware BS sleeping, scheduling and power allocation policy is proposed by estimating the required future information with three levels of context information. Simulation results show that our policy provides significant gains over those without exploiting any context information. Moreover, it is seen that different levels of context information play different roles in saving energy and reducing outage in transmission.

A Low-Complexity Encoding of Quasi-Cyclic Codes Based on Galois Fourier Transform

The encoding complexity of a general (en,ek) quasi-cyclic code is O[(e^2)(n-k)k]. This paper presents a novel low-complexity encoding algorithm for quasi-cyclic (QC) codes based on matrix transformation. First, a message vector is encoded into a transformed codeword in the transform domain. Then, the transmitted codeword is obtained from the transformed codeword by the inverse Galois Fourier transform. For binary QC codes, a simple and fast mapping is required to post-process the transformed codeword such that the transmitted codeword is binary as well. The complexity of our proposed encoding algorithm is O[e(n-k)k] symbol operations for non-binary codes and O[ek(n-k)(log_2 e)] bit operations for binary codes. These complexities are much lower than their traditional counterpart O[(e^2)(n-k)k]. For example, our complexity of encoding a 64-ary (4095,2160) QC code is only 1.59% of that of traditional encoding, and our complexities of encoding the binary (4095, 2160) and (8176, 7154) QC codes are respectively 9.52% and 1.77% of those of traditional encoding. We also study the application of our low-complexity encoding algorithm to one of the most important subclasses of QC codes, namely QC-LDPC codes, especially when their parity-check matrices are rank deficient.

On the Minimum Energy of Sending Gaussian Multiterminal Sources over the Gaussian MAC

In this work, we investigate the minimum energy of transmitting correlated sources over the Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). Compared to other works on joint source-channel coding, we consider the general scenario where the source and channel bandwidths are not naturally matched. In particular, we proposed the use of hybrid digital-analog coding over to improve the transmission energy efficiency. Different models of correlated sources are studied. We first consider lossless transmission of binary sources over the MAC. We then treat lossy transmission of Gaussian sources over the Gaussian MAC, including CEO sources and multiterminal sources. In all cases, we show that hybrid transmission achieves the best known energy efficiency.

A new sufficient condition for sum-rate tightness in quadratic Gaussian multiterminal source coding

This work considers the quadratic Gaussian multiterminal (MT) source coding problem and provides a new sufficient condition for the Berger-Tung sum-rate bound to be tight. The converse proof utilizes a set of virtual remote sources given which the MT sources are block independent with a maximum block size of two. The given MT source coding problem is then related to a set of two-terminal problems with matrix-distortion constraints, for which a new lower bound on the sum-rate is given. Finally, a convex optimization problem is formulated and a sufficient condition derived for the optimal BT scheme to satisfy the subgradient based Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition. The set of sum-rate tightness problems defined by our new sufficient condition subsumes all previously known tight cases, and opens new direction for a more general partial solution.
