Quantum Key Distribution with High Order Fibonacci-like Orbital Angular Momentum States

The coding space in quantum communication could be expanded to high-dimensional space by using orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of photons, as both the capacity of the channel and security are enhanced. Here we present a novel approach to realize high-capacity quantum key distribution (QKD) by exploiting OAM states. The innovation of the proposed approach relies on a unique type of entangledphoton source which produces entangled photons with OAM randomly distributed among high order Fiboncci-like numbers and a new physical mechanism for efficiently sharing keys. This combination of entanglement with mathematical properties of high order Fibonacci sequences provides the QKD protocol which is immune to photon-number-splitting attacks and allows secure generation of long keys from few photons. Unlike other protocols, reference frame alignment and active modulation of production and detection bases are unnecessary.

Secret key distillation over realistic satellite-to-satellite free-space channel: exclusion zone analysis

Quantum cryptography studies the unconditional information security against an all-powerful eavesdropper in secret key distillation. However the assumption of an omnipotent eavesdropper is too strict for some realistic implementations. In this paper we study the realistic application model of secret key distillation over satellite-to-satellite free space channel in which we impose a reasonable restriction on the eavesdropper by setting an exclusion zone around the legitimate receiver as a defense strategy. We first study the case where the eavesdropper's aperture size is unlimited so her power is only restricted by the exclusion zone. Then we limit Eve's aperture to a finite size and study the straightforward case when her aperture is in the same plane of Bob, investigating how an exclusion zone can help improve security. Correspondingly, we determine the secret key rate lower bounds as well as upper bounds. Further more, we also apply our results on specific discrete variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) protocols for comparison. We show that by putting reasonable restrictions on the eavesdropper through the realistic assumptions of an inaccessible exclusion zone, we can increase the key rate in comparison to those without and do so with relatively lower transmission frequency. We conclude that this model is suitable for extended analysis in many light gathering scenarios and for different carrier wavelengths.

Secret key distillation across a quantum wiretap channel under restricted eavesdropping

The theory of quantum cryptography aims to guarantee unconditional information-theoretic security against an omnipotent eavesdropper. In many practical scenarios, however, the assumption of an all-powerful adversary is excessive and can be relaxed considerably. In this paper we study secret key distillation across a lossy and noisy quantum wiretap channel between Alice and Bob, with a separately parameterized realistically lossy quantum channel to the eavesdropper Eve. We show that under such restricted eavesdropping, the key rates achievable can exceed the secret key distillation capacity against an unrestricted eavesdropper in the quantum wiretap channel. Further, we show upper bounds on the key rates based on the relative entropy of entanglement. This simple restricted eavesdropping model is widely applicable, e.g., to free-space quantum optical communication, where realistic collection of light by Eve is limited by the finite size of her optical aperture. Future work will include calculating bounds on the amount of light Eve can collect under various realistic scenarios.

A new muon-pion collection and transport system design using superconducting solenoids based on CSNS

A new muon and pion capture system is proposed for the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), currently under construction. Using about 4\% of the pulsed proton beam (1.6 GeV, 4 kW and 1 Hz) of CSNS to bombard a cylindrical graphite target inside a superconducting solenoid, both surface muons and pions can be acquired. The acceptance of this novel capture system - a graphite target wrapped up by a superconducting solenoid - is larger than the normal muon beam lines using quadrupoles at one side of the separated muon target. The muon and pion production at different capture magnetic fields was calculated using Geant4. The bending angle of the capture solenoid with respect to the proton beam was also optimized in simulation to achieve more muons and pions. Based on the layout of the muon experimental area reserved at the CSNS project, a preliminary muon beam line was designed with multi-purpose muon spin rotation areas (surface, decay and low-energy muons). Finally, high-flux surface muons (10$^8$/s) and decay muons (10$^9$/s) simulated by G4beamline will be available at the end of the decay solenoid based on the first phase of CSNS. This collection and transport system will be a very effective beam line at a proton current of 2.5 $μ$A.
