Emergent dynamics of the Cucker-Smale flocking model and its variants

In this chapter, we present the Cucker-Smale type flocking models, and discuss their mathematical structures and flocking theorems in terms of coupling strength, interaction topologies and initial data. In 2007, two mathematicians Felipe Cucker and Steve Smale introduced a second-order particle model which resembles Newton's equations in $N$-body system, and present how their simple model can exhibit emergent flocking behavior under sufficient conditions expressed only in terms of parameters and initial data. After Cucker-Smale's seminal works, their model has received lots of attention from applied math and control engineering communities. We discuss the state-of-art for the flocking theorems to Cucker-Smale type flocking models.

On the region of attraction of phase-locked states for swing equations on connected graphs with inhomogeneous dampings

We consider the synchronization problem of swing equations, a second-order Kuramoto-type model, on connected networks with inhomogeneous dampings. This was largely motivated by its relevance to the dynamics of power grids. We focus on the estimate of the region of attraction of synchronous states which is a central problem in the transient stability of power grids. In the recent literature, Dörfler, Chertkov, and Bullo [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 110 (2013), pp. 2005-2010] found a condition for the synchronization in smart grids. They pointed out that the region of attraction is an important unsolved problem. In [SIAM J. Control Optim., 52 (2014), pp. 2482-2511], only a special case was considered where the oscillators have homogeneous dampings and the underlying graph has a diameter less than or equal to 2. There the analysis heavily relies on these assumptions; however, they are too strict compared to the real power networks. In this paper, we continue the study and derive an estimate on the region of attraction of phase-locked states for lossless power grids on connected graphs with inhomogeneous dampings. Our main strategy is based on the gradient-like formulation and energy estimate. We refine the assumptions by constructing a new energy functional which enables us to consider such general settings.

Cucker-Smale flocking with alternating leaders

We study the emergent flocking behavior in a group of Cucker-Smale flocking agents under rooted leadership with alternating leaders. It is well known that the network topology regulates the emergent behaviors of flocks. All existing results on the Cucker-Smale model with leader-follower topologies assume a fixed leader during temporal evolution process. The rooted leadership is the most general topology taking a leadership. Motivated by collective behaviors observed in the flocks of birds, swarming fishes and potential engineering applications, we consider the rooted leadership with alternating leaders; that is, at each time slice there is a leader but it can be switched among the agents from time to time. We will provide several sufficient conditions leading to the asymptotic flocking among the Cucker-Smale agents under rooted leadership with alternating leaders.
