Suppressing coherence effects in quantum-measurement based engines

The recent advances in the study of thermodynamics of microscopic processes have driven the search for new developments in energy converters utilizing quantum effects. We here propose a universal framework to describe the thermodynamics of a quantum engine fueled by quantum projective measurements. Standard quantum thermal machines operating in a finite-time regime with a driven Hamiltonian that does not commute in different times have the performance decreased by the presence of coherence, which is associated with a larger entropy production and irreversibility degree. However, we show that replacing the standard hot thermal reservoir by a projective measurement operation with general basis in the Bloch sphere and controlling the basis angles suitably could improve the performance of the quantum engine as well as decrease the entropy change during the measurement process. Our results go in direction of a generalization of quantum thermal machine models where the fuel comes from general sources beyond the standard thermal reservoir.

Seeing the Forest through the Trees: Adaptive Local Exploration of Large Graphs

Visualization is a powerful paradigm for exploratory data analysis. Visualizing large graphs, however, often results in a meaningless hairball. In this paper, we propose a different approach that helps the user adaptively explore large million-node graphs from a local perspective. For nodes that the user investigates, we propose to only show the neighbors with the most subjectively interesting neighborhoods. We contribute novel ideas to measure this interestingness in terms of how surprising a neighborhood is given the background distribution, as well as how well it fits the nodes the user chose to explore. We introduce FACETS, a fast and scalable method for visually exploring large graphs. By implementing our above ideas, it allows users to look into the forest through its trees. Empirical evaluation shows that our method works very well in practice, providing rankings of nodes that match interests of users. Moreover, as it scales linearly, FACETS is suited for the exploration of very large graphs.

Ultrathin MgB2 films fabricated on Al2O3 substrate by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition with high Tc and Jc

Ultrathin MgB2 superconducting films with a thickness down to 7.5 nm are epitaxially grown on (0001) Al2O3 substrate by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition method. The films are phase-pure, oxidation-free and continuous. The 7.5 nm thin film shows a Tc(0) of 34 K, which is so far the highest Tc(0) reported in MgB2 with the same thickness. The critical current density of ultrathin MgB2 films below 10 nm is demonstrated for the first time as Jc ~ 10^6 A cm^{-2} for the above 7.5 nm sample at 16 K. Our results reveal the excellent superconducting properties of ultrathin MgB2 films with thicknesses between 7.5 and 40 nm on Al2O3 substrate.
