On the Rotation of Sunspots and Their Magnetic Polarity

The rotation of sunspots of 2 yr in two different solar cycles is studied with the data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the \it Solar Dynamics Observatory \rm and the Michelson Doppler Imager instrument on board the \it Solar and Heliospheric Observataory.\rm We choose the $α$ sunspot groups and the relatively large and stable sunspots of complex active regions in our sample. In the year of 2003, the $α$ sunspot groups and the preceding sunspots tend to rotate counterclockwise and have positive magnetic polarity in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, the magnetic polarity and rotational tendency of the $α$ sunspot groups and the preceding sunspots are opposite to the northern hemisphere. The average rotational speed of these sunspots in 2003 is about $0^{\circ}.65 \rm \ hr^{-1}$. From 2014 January to 2015 February, the $α$ sunspot groups and the preceding sunspots tend to rotate clockwise and have negative magnetic polarity in the northern hemisphere. The patterns of rotation and magnetic polarity of the southern hemisphere are also opposite to those of the northern hemisphere. The average rotational speed of these sunspots in 2014/2015 is about $1^{\circ}.49 \rm \ hr^{-1}$. The rotation of the relatively large and stable preceding sunspots and that of the $α$ sunspot groups located in the same hemisphere have opposite rotational direction in 2003 and 2014/2015.

The Induced Electric Field Distribution in Solar Atmosphere

A method of calculating induced electric field is presented in this paper. Induced electric field in solar atmosphere is derived by the time variation of magnetic field when the charged particle accumulation is neglected. In order to get the spatial distribution of magnetic field, several extrapolation methods are introduced. With observational data from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) aboard the NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on May 20th, 2010, we extrapolate the magnetic field to the upper atmosphere from the photosphere. By calculating the time variation of magnetic field, we can get the induced electric field. The derived induced electric field can reach a value of 100 V/cm and the average electric field has a maximum point at the layer of 360 km above the photosphere. The Monte Carlo statistics method is used to compute the triple integration of induced electric field.

A Theory about Electric Current and Heating in Plasma

The traditional generalized Ohm's law in MHD do not explicitly present the relation of electric currents and electric fields in fully ionized plasma, and lead to some unexpected concepts, such as "the magnetic frozen-in plasma", magnetic reconnection etc. In the present paper, we solve the balance equation can give exact solution of the velocities of electrons and ions, and then derived the electric current in fully ionized plasma. In the case ignoring boundary condition, there is no electric current in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field when external forces are ignored. The electric field in the plane perpendicular to magnetic field do not contribute to the electric currents, so do the induced electric field from the motion of the plasma across magnetic field. The lack of induced electric current will keep magnetic field in space unaffected. The velocity of the bulk velocity of the plasma perpendicular to magnetic field is not free, it is decided by electromagnetic field and the external forces. We conclude that the bulk velocity of the fully ionized plasma is not coupled with the magnetic field. The motion of the plasma do not change the magnetic field in space, but the plasma will be confined by magnetic field. Due to the confinement of magnetic field, the plasma kinetic energy will be transformed into plasma thermal energy by the Lamor motion and collisions between the same species of particles inside plasma. Because the electric field perpendicular to magnetic field do not contribute electric current, the variation of magnetic field will transfer energy directly into the plasma thermal energy by induced electric field. The heating of plasma could be from the kinetic energy and the variation of magnetic field.
