Effect of C$_{60}$ giant resonance on the photoabsorption of encaged atoms

The absolute differential oscillator strengths (DOS's) for the photoabsorption of the Ne, Ar, and Xe atoms encapsulated in the C$_{60}$ have been evaluated using the time-dependent-density-functional-theory, which solves the quantum Liouvillian equation with the Lanczos chain method. The calculations are performed in the energy regions both inside and outside the C$_{60}$ giant resonance. The photoabsorption spectra of the atoms encaged in the C$_{60}$ demonstrate strong oscillations inside the energy range of the C$_{60}$ giant resonance. This type of oscillation cannot be explained by the confinement resonance, but is due to the energy transfer from the C$_{60}$ valence electrons to the photoelectron through the intershell coupling.

Photoabsorption spectrum of the Xe@C$_{60}$ endohedral fullerene

Photoabsorption spectrum of the Xe@C$_{60}$ endohedral fullerene has been studied using the time-dependent-density-functional-theory (TDDFT), which represents the dynamical polarizability of an interacting electron system by an off-diagonal matrix element of the resolvent of the Liouvilliam superoperator and solves the problem with the Lanczos algorithm. The method has been tested with the photoabsorption cross sections of the free Xe atom and C$_{60}$ fullerene. The result for the Xe@C$_{60}$ confirms the three main peaks observed in the recent measurement in the energy region of the Xe 4$d$ giant resonance and demonstrates the underestimation of the photoionization cross section by the experiment. It is suggested to use the current theoretical result around 22 eV to calibrate the experimental data.

Photoionization of Ce$^{3+}$ - Ce$^{4+}$

Photoionization of the Ce$^{3+}$ - Ce$^{4+}$ process has been studied using the random phase approximation with exchange method in the energy region 100-150 eV. Comparison of our results with the recent measurement [Müller {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 133001 (2008)] confirms the suppression effect of the carbon cage in the endohedral fullerene Ce@C$_{82}^+$ photoionization. The reasons for the cause of the confinement resonance and the suppression effect are discussed.
