Joint Radar and Communication: A Survey

Joint radar and communication (JRC) technology has become important for civil and military applications for decades. This paper introduces the concepts, characteristics and advantages of JRC technology, presenting the typical applications that have benefited from JRC technology currently and in the future. This paper explores the state-of-the-art of JRC in the levels of coexistence, cooperation, co-design and collaboration. Compared to previous surveys, this paper reviews the entire trends that drive the development of radar sensing and wireless communication using JRC. Specifically, we explore an open research issue on radar and communication operating with mutual benefits based on collaboration, which represents the fourth stage of JRC evolution. This paper provides useful perspectives for future researches of JRC technology.

Robust Clock Synchronization via Low Rank Approximation in Wireless Networks

Clock synchronization has become a key design objective in wireless networks for its essential importance in many applications. However, as the wireless link is prone to random network delays due to unreliable channel conditions, it is in general difficult to achieve accurate clock synchronization among wireless nodes. This letter proposes robust clock synchronization algorithms based on low rank matrix approximation, which are able to correct timestamps in the presence of random network delays. We design a low rank approximation based maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) to jointly estimate the clock offset and clock skew under the two-way message exchange mechanism assuming Gaussian delay distribution. By formulating the timestamp correction problem into a low rank approximation problem, we can solve the problem in the singular value decomposition (SVD) domain and also via nuclear norm minimization. Numerical results show that the proposed schemes can correct noisy timestamps and thus achieve more robust synchronization performance than the MLE.

A Diplexer-Based Receiver for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is an appealing research area because both information and energy can be delivered to wireless devices simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a diplexer-based receiver architecture that can utilizes both the doubling frequency and baseband signals after the mixer. The baseband signals are used for information decoding and the doubling frequency signals are converted to direct current for energy harvesting. We analyze the signal in the receiver and find that the power of the energy harvested is equal to that of information decoded. Therefore, the diplexer can be used as a power splitter with a power splitting factor of 0.5. Specifically, we consider a multiuser multi-input single-output (MISO) system, in which each user is equipped with the newly proposed receiver. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem that minimizes the total transmitted power subject to some constraints on each user's quality of service and energy harvesting demand. We show that the problem thus formulated is a non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP), which can be solved by semi-definite relaxation.

Spectrum sensing by cognitive radios at very low SNR

Spectrum sensing is one of the enabling functionalities for cognitive radio (CR) systems to operate in the spectrum white space. To protect the primary incumbent users from interference, the CR is required to detect incumbent signals at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we present a spectrum sensing technique based on correlating spectra for detection of television (TV) broadcasting signals. The basic strategy is to correlate the periodogram of the received signal with the a priori known spectral features of the primary signal. We show that according to the Neyman-Pearson criterion, this spectral correlation-based sensing technique is asymptotically optimal at very low SNR and with a large sensing time. From the system design perspective, we analyze the effect of the spectral features on the spectrum sensing performance. Through the optimization analysis, we obtain useful insights on how to choose effective spectral features to achieve reliable sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed sensing technique can reliably detect analog and digital TV signals at SNR as low as -20 dB.

Wideband Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

Spectrum sensing is an essential enabling functionality for cognitive radio networks to detect spectrum holes and opportunistically use the under-utilized frequency bands without causing harmful interference to legacy networks. This paper introduces a novel wideband spectrum sensing technique, called multiband joint detection, which jointly detects the signal energy levels over multiple frequency bands rather than consider one band at a time. The proposed strategy is efficient in improving the dynamic spectrum utilization and reducing interference to the primary users. The spectrum sensing problem is formulated as a class of optimization problems in interference limited cognitive radio networks. By exploiting the hidden convexity in the seemingly non-convex problem formulations, optimal solutions for multiband joint detection are obtained under practical conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed spectrum sensing schemes can considerably improve the system performance. This paper establishes important principles for the design of wideband spectrum sensing algorithms in cognitive radio networks.
