Observational evidence for a spin-up line in the P-Pdot diagram of millisecond pulsars

It is believed that millisecond pulsars attain their fast spins by accreting matter and angular momentum from companion stars. Theoretical modelling of the accretion process suggests a spin-up line in the period-period derivative ($P$-$\dot{P}$) diagram of millisecond pulsars, which plays an important role in population studies of radio millisecond pulsars and accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries. Here we present observational evidence for such a spin-up line using a sample of 143 radio pulsars with $P$ < 30 ms. We also find that PSRs~J1823$-$3021A and J1824$-$2452A, located near the classic spin-up line, are consistent with the broad population of millisecond pulsars. Finally, we show that our approach of Bayesian inference can probe accretion physics, allowing constraints to be placed on the accretion rate and the disk-magnetosphere interaction.

Standard-siren cosmology using gravitational waves from binary black holes

Gravitational-wave astronomy provides a unique new way to study the expansion history of the Universe. In this work, we investigate the impact future gravitational-wave observatories will have on cosmology. Third-generation observatories like the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer will be sensitive to essentially all of the binary black hole coalescence events in the Universe. Recent work by \cite{farr2019future} points out that features in the stellar-mass black hole population break the mass-redshift degeneracy, facilitating precise determination of the Hubble parameter without electromagnetic counterparts or host galaxy catalogues. Using a hierarchical Bayesian inference model, we show that with one year of observations by the Einstein Telescope, the Hubble constant will be measured to $\lesssim 1\%$. We also show that this method can be used to perform Bayesian model selection between cosmological models. As an illustrative example, we find that a decisive statement can be made comparing the $Λ$CDM and RHCT cosmological models using two weeks of data from the Einstein Telescope.

Black hole central engine for ultra-long gamma-ray burst 111209A and its associated supernova 2011kl

Recently, the first association between an ultra-long gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a supernova is reported, i.e., GRB 111209A/SN 2011kl, which enables us to investigate the physics of central engines or even progenitors for ultra-long GRBs. In this paper, we inspect the broad-band data of GRB 111209A/SN 2011kl. The late-time X-ray lightcurve exhibits a GRB 121027A-like fall-back bump, suggesting a black hole central engine. We thus propose a collapsar model with fall-back accretion for GRB 111209A/SN 2011kl. The required model parameters, such as the total mass and radius of the progenitor star, suggest that the progenitor of GRB 111209A is more likely a Wolf-Rayet star instead of blue supergiant, and the central engine of this ultra-long burst is a black hole. The implications of our results is discussed.

Empirical studies on the network of social groups: the case of Tencent QQ

Participation in social groups are important but the collective behaviors of human as a group are difficult to analyze due to the difficulties to quantify ordinary social relation, group membership, and to collect a comprehensive dataset. Such difficulties can be circumvented by analyzing online social networks. In this paper, we analyze a comprehensive dataset obtained from Tencent QQ, an instant messenger with the highest market share in China. Specifically, we analyze three derivative networks involving groups and their members -- the hypergraph of groups, the network of groups and the user network -- to reveal social interactions at microscopic and mesoscopic level. Our results uncover interesting behaviors on the growth of user groups, the interactions between groups, and their relationship with member age and gender. These findings lead to insights which are difficult to obtain in ordinary social networks.
