Enhancing dissipative cat-state generation via nonequilibrium pump fields

Cat states, which were initially proposed to manifest macroscopic superpositions, play an outstanding role in fundamental aspects of quantum dynamics. In addition, they have potential applications in quantum computation and quantum sensing. However, cat states are vulnerable to dissipation, which puts the focus of cat-state generation on higher speed and increased robustness. Dissipative cat-state generation is a common approach based on the nonlinear coupling between a lossy pump field and a half-frequency signal field. In such an approach, the pump field is usually kept in equilibrium, which limits the cat-state generation. We show that the equilibrium requirement can be removed by leveraging a synchronous pump method. In this nonequilibrium regime, the speed of the cat-state generation can be increased by one order of magnitude, and the robustness to single-photon loss can be enhanced. The realization of synchronous pumps is discussed for both time-multiplexed systems and standing modes.

Accessing the bath information in open quantum systems with the stochastic c-number Langevin equation method

In traditional open quantum systems, the baths are usually traced out so that only the system information is left in the equations of motion. However, recent studies reveal that using only the system degrees of freedom can be insufficient. In this work, we develop a stochastic c-number Langevin equation method which can conveniently access the bath information. In our method, the studied quantities are the expectation values of operators which can contain both system operators and bath operators. The dynamics of the operators of interest is formally divided into separate system and bath parts, with auxiliary stochastic fields. After solving the independent stochastic dynamics of the system part and the bath part, we can recombine them by taking the average over these stochastic fields to obtain the desired quantities. Several applications of the theory are highlighted, including the pure dephasing model, the spin-boson model, and an optically excited quantum dot coupled to a bath of phonons.

Quantum Langevin approach for non-Markovian quantum dynamics of the spin-boson model

One long-standing difficult problem in quantum dissipative dynamics is to solve the spin-boson model in a non-Markovian regime where a tractable systematic master equation does not exist. The spin-boson model is particularly important due to its crucial applications in quantum noise control and manipulation as well as its central role in developing quantum theories of open systems. Here we solve this important model by developing a non-Markovian quantum Langevin approach. By projecting the quantum Langevin equation onto the coherent states of the bath, we can derivie a set of non-Markovian quantum Bloch equations containing no explicit noise variables. This special feature offers a tremendous advantage over the existing stochastic Schrödinger equations in numerical simulations. The physical significance and generality of our approach are briefly discussed.
