Simulating Kilonovae in the ΛCDM Universe

Kilonovae are optical flashes produced in the aftermath of neutron star-neutron star mergers (NNMs) or neutron star-black hole mergers (NBMs). In this work, we use the Millennium Simulation, combined with a semi-analytic galaxy formation model--GABE (Galaxy Assembly with Binary Evolution) which adopts binary stellar population synthesis models, to explore the cosmic event rate of kilonovae, and the properties of their host galaxies in a cosmological context. We find that model with supernova kick velocity of 0 km/s fits the observation best, in agreement with the exception of some formation channels of binary neutron star. This indicates that NNMs prefer to originate from binary systems with low kick velocities. With V$_{\rm kick}$=0 km/s, the cosmic event rate of NNMs and NBMs at z=0 are 283 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$ and 91 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$, respectively, marginally consistent with the constraint from LVC GWTC-1. For Milky Way-mass galaxies, we predict the NNM rate is $25.7^{+59.6}_{-7.1}$ Myr$^{-1}$, which is also in good agreement with the observed properties of binary neutron stars in the Milky Way. Taking all the NNMs into account in the history of Milky Way-mass galaxies, we find that the averaged r-process elements yield with A>79 in a NNM and NBM event should be 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ to be consistent with observation. We conclude that NGC 4993, the host galaxy of GW170817, is a typical host galaxy for NNMs. However, generally NNMs and NBMs tend to reside in young, blue, star-forming, late-type galaxies, with stellar mass and gaseous metallicity distribution peaking at $10^{10.65}$ M$_{\odot}$ and 8.72-8.85, respectively. By studying kilonovae host galaxies in the cosmological background, it is promising to constrain model details better when we have more events in the forthcoming future. (abridged)

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Structure, hydrolysis and diffusion of aqueous vanadium ions from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics

A molecular level understanding of the properties of electroactive vanadium species in aqueous solution is crucial for enhancing the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries (RFB). Here, we employ Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations based on density functional theory to investigate the hydration structures, first hydrolysis reaction and diffusion of aqueous V$^{2+}$, V$^{3+}$, VO$^{2+}$, and VO$_2^+$ ions at 300 K. The results indicate that the first hydration shell of both V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ contains six water molecules, while VO$^{2+}$ is coordinated to five and VO$_2^+$ to three water ligands. The first acidity constants (p$K_\mathrm{a}$) estimated using metadynamics simulations are 2.47, 3.06 and 5.38 for aqueous V$^{3+}$, VO$_2^+$ and VO$^{2+}$, respectively, while V$^{2+}$ is predicted to be a fairly weak acid in aqueous solution with a p$K_\mathrm{a}$ value of 6.22. We also show that the presence of chloride ions in the first coordination sphere of the aqueous VO$_2^+$ ion has a significant impact on water hydrolysis leading to a much higher p$K_\mathrm{a}$ value of 4.8. This should result in a lower propensity of aqueous VO$_2^+$ for oxide precipitation reaction in agreement with experimental observations for chloride-based electrolyte solutions. The computed diffusion coefficients of vanadium species in water at room temperature are found to increase as V$^{3+}$ $<$ VO$_2^+$ $<$ VO$^{2+}$ $<$ V$^{2+}$ and thus correlate with the simulated hydrolysis constants, namely, the higher the p$K_\mathrm{a}$ value, the greater the diffusion coefficient.

Experimental fault-tolerant universal quantum gates with solid-state spins under ambient conditions

Quantum computation provides great speedup over its classical counterpart for certain problems. One of the key challenges for quantum computation is to realize precise control of the quantum system in the presence of noise. Control of the spin-qubits in solids with the accuracy required by fault-tolerant quantum computation under ambient conditions remains elusive. Here, we quantitatively characterize the source of noise during quantum gate operation and demonstrate strategies to suppress the effect of these. A universal set of logic gates in a nitrogen-vacancy centre in diamond are reported with an average single-qubit gate fidelity of 0.999952 and two-qubit gate fidelity of 0.992. These high control fidelities have been achieved at room temperature in naturally abundant 13C diamond via composite pulses and an optimized control method.
