Deterministic homogenization under optimal moment assumptions for fast-slow systems. Part 1

We consider deterministic homogenization (convergence to a stochastic differential equation) for multiscale systems of the form \[ x_{k+1} = x_k + n^{-1} a_n(x_k,y_k) + n^{-1/2} b_n(x_k,y_k), \quad y_{k+1} = T_n y_k, \] where the fast dynamics is given by a family $T_n$ of nonuniformly expanding maps. Part 1 builds on our recent work on martingale approximations for families of nonuniformly expanding maps. We prove an iterated weak invariance principle and establish optimal iterated moment bounds for such maps. (The iterated moment bounds are new even for a fixed nonuniformly expanding map T.) The homogenization results are a consequence of this together with parallel developments on rough path theory in Part 2 by Chevyrev, Friz, Korepanov, Melbourne & Zhang.

Finitary isomorphisms of Brownian motions

Ornstein and Shields (Advances in Math., 10:143-146, 1973) proved that Brownian motion reflected on a bounded region is an infinite entropy Bernoulli flow and thus Ornstein theory yielded the existence of a measure-preserving isomorphism between any two such Brownian motions. For fixed h >0, we construct by elementary methods, isomorphisms with almost surely finite coding windows between Brownian motions reflected on the intervals [0, qh] for all positive rationals q.

Examples of type ${\rm III}_{1}$ inhomogenous Markov shifts supported on topological Markov shifts

We construct inhomogenous Markov measures for which the shift is of Kreiger type ${\rm III}_{1}$. These measures are fully supported on a toplogical markov shift space of the hyperbolic toral automorphism $f(x,y)=\left(\{x+y\},x\right):\mathbb{T}^{2}\to\mathbb{T}^{2}$ and are used in a subsequent paper in the construction of $C^{1}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ without an absolutely continuous invariant measure.

Relative Complexity of Random Walks in Random Scenery in the absence of a weak invariance principle for the local times

We answer the question of Aaronson about the relative complexity of Random Walks in Random Sceneries driven by either aperiodic two dimensional random walks, two-dimensional Simple Random walk, or by aperiodic random walks in the domain of attraction of the Cauchy distribution. A key step is proving that the range of the random walk satisfies the Fölner property almost surely.

On the K property for Maharam extensions of Bernoulli shifts and a question of Krengel

We show that the Maharam extension of a conservative. non singular K Bernoulli shift without an a.c.i.p. is a K transformation. This together with the fact that the Maharam extension of a conservative transformation is conservative gives a negative answer to Krengel's and Weiss's questions about existence of a type II}_\infty or type III}_λwith λnot equal to 1 Bernoulli shift. A conservative non singular K Bernoulli shift is either of type II_1 or of type III_1.

Weak invariance principle for the local times of partial sums of Markov Chains

Let X_{n} be an integer valued Markov Chain with finite state space. Let S_{n}=\sum_{k=0}^{n}X_{k} and let L_{n}(x) be the number of times S_{k} hits x up to step n. Define the normalized local time process t_{n}(x) by t_{n}(x)=\frac{L_{n}(\sqrt{n}(x)}{\sqrt{n}}. The subject of this paper is to prove a functional, weak invariance principle for the normalized sequence t_{n}, i.e. we prove that under some assumptions about the Markov Chain, the normalized local times converge in distribution to the local time of the Brownian Motion.
