Evolution of Braneworld Kerr-Newman Naked Singularities

We study evolution of the braneworld Kerr--Newman (K-N) naked singularities, namely their mass $M$ , spin $a$, and tidal charge $b$ characterizing the role of the bulk space, due to matter in-falling from Keplerian accretion disk. We construct the evolution in two limiting cases applied to the tidal charge. In the first case we assume $b$ = const during the evolution, in the second one we assume that the dimensionless tidal charge $β\equiv b/M^2$ = const. For positive values of the tidal charge the evolution is equivalent to the case of the standard K-N naked singularity under accretion of electrically neutral matter. We demonstrate that counter-rotating accretion always converts a K-N naked singularity into an extreme K-N black hole and that the corotating accretion leads to variety of outcomes. The conversion to an extreme K-N black hole is possible for naked singularity with dimensionless tidal charge $β< 0.25$, and $β\in (0.25, 1)$ with sufficiently low spin. In other cases the accretion ends in a transcendental state. For $0.25 < β< 1$ this is a mining unstable K-N naked singularity enabling formally unlimited energy extraction from the naked singularity. In the case of $β> 1$, the corotating accretion creates unlimited torodial structure of mater orbiting the naked singularity. Both non-standard outcomes of the corotating accretion imply a transcendence of such naked singularity due to nonlinear gravitational effects.

Geodesic Model of HF QPOs Tested for Black Holes in Spacetimes Reflecting the Effect of Surrounding Dark Matter

Using the simple but robust model of a shell of dark matter (DM) around a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), represented by the mass ratio of the shell and BH $ΔM/M$, the shell extension $Δr_s$ and its inner radius $r_s$, we study the influence of DM on the spacetime structure and geodesic motion, and provide a classification of the BH+DM shell spacetimes according to the properties of the stable circular geodesics governing Keplerian disks. We focus our attention on the epicyclic motion around circular geodesics that can be related to observational phenomena in X-ray radiation from Keplerian accretion disks, assumed to be influenced by the DM shell only gravitationally. We give the frequencies of the orbital and epicyclic motions and discuss their properties in terms of the parameters governing the DM shell. Using the frequencies in relevant variants of the standard geodesic model of high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs), we test the role of DM by fitting the HF QPO data from some microquasars and active galactic nuclei with supermassive BHs where no variant of the geodesic model applied in the standard vacuum BH background is able to explain the data. We thus provide a robust review of the applicability of the geodesic model of HF QPOs, and also provide limits on the amount of DM around a BH. We demonstrate that the geodesic model could be well applied to most observations of active galactic nuclei, with strong restrictions on the amount of invisible matter around BHs.

New interior model of neutron stars

The Tolman VII solution is considered by some as one of the few analytical solutions to Einstein's equations, which describes approximately well the interior of neutron stars (NSs). This solution is characterized by the mass $M$, radius $R$, and an energy density that varies quadratically with the radial coordinate $r$. Recently, Jiang and Yagi proposed a modification of this solution, the so-called modified Tolman VII (MTVII) solution, by introducing an additional quartic term to the energy density radial profile. The MTVII solution is an approximate solution to Einstein's equation, which includes a new parameter $α$ that allows the solution to have a better agreement with the energy density profiles for realistic NSs. Here we consider the MTVII solution, showing that for certain values of the parameter $α$ and compactness $\mathcal{C}$ this solution manifests a region of negative pressure near the surface which leads to negative values of the tidal Love number. To alleviate these drawbacks, we introduce an exact version of the MTVII solution obtained by solving numerically Einstein's equations for the MTVII energy density profile. As an application of our new exact MTVII (EMTVII) solution, we calculate the tidal Love number and tidal deformability, as a function of $\mathcal{C}$, for different values of the parameter $α$. We find that the EMTVII solution predicts a positive tidal Love number for the whole range of allowed values of parameters $(\mathcal{C},α)$, in agreement with previous results for realistic NSs.

Polytropic spheres modelling dark matter halos of dwarf galaxies

Dwarf galaxies and their dark matter (DM) halos have the velocity curves of a different character than those in large galaxies. They are modelled by a simple pseudo iso-thermal model containing only two parameters that do not allow to obtain insight into physics of the DM halo. We would like to obtain some insight into the physical conditions in DM halos of dwarf galaxies by using a simple physically based model of DM halos. In order to treat a diversity of the dwarf galaxy velocity profiles in a unifying framework, we apply the polytropic spheres characterised by the polytropic index $n$ and the relativistic parameter $σ$ as a model of dwarf-galaxy DM halos and match the velocity of circular geodesics of the polytropes to the velocity curves observed in the dwarf galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS ensemble. We introduce three classes of the LITTLE THINGS dwarf galaxies in accord with the polytrope models, due to the different character of the velocity profile. The first class corresponds to polytropes having $n < 1$ with linearly increasing velocity along with the whole profile, the second class has $1 < n < 2$ and the velocity profile becomes flat in the external region, the third class has $n > 2$ and the velocity profile reaches a maximum and demonstrated a decline in the external region. The $σ$ parameter has to be strongly non-relativistic ($σ< 10^{-8}$) for all dwarf galaxy models -- it varies for the models of each class, but these variations have a negligible influence on the character of the velocity profile. Our results indicate the possibility that at least two different kinds of dark matter are behind the composition of DM halos. The matches of the observational velocity curves are of the same quality as those obtained by the pseudo-isothermal, core-like models of dwarf galaxy DM halos.

Charged particle and epicyclic motions around $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole immersed in an external magnetic field

We investigate particle motion in the vicinity of a $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) black hole immersed in external asymptotically uniform magnetic field. It is well known that magnetic fields can strongly affect charged particle motion in the black hole vicinity due to the Lorenz force. We find that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling gives rise to a similar effect, reducing the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) with respect to the purely relativistic Schwarzschild black hole. Further, we consider particle collisions in the black hole vicinity to determine the center of mass energy and show that this energy increases with respect to the Schwarzschild case due to the effect of the GB term. Finally, we consider epicyclic motion and its frequencies and resonance as a mean to test the predictions of the model against astrophysical observations. In particular we test which values of the parameters of the theory best fit the 3:2 resonance of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in three low-mass X-ray binaries.

Deterministic Aspect of the $γ$-ray Variability in Blazars

Linear time series analysis, mainly the Fourier transform based methods, has been quite successful in extracting information contained in the ever-modulating light curves (Lcs) of active galactic nuclei, and thereby contribute in characterizing the general features of supermassive black hole systems. In particular, the statistical properties of $γ$-ray variability of blazars are found to be fairly represented by flicker noise in the temporal frequency domain. However, these conventional methods have not been able to fully encapsulate the richness and the complexity displayed in the light curves of the sources. In this work, to complement our previous study on the similar topic, we perform non-linear time series analysis of the decade-long Fermi/LAT observations of 20 $γ$-ray bright blazars. The study is motivated to address one of the most relevant queries that whether the dominant dynamical processes leading to the observed $γ$-ray variability are of deterministic or stochastic nature. For the purpose, we perform Recurrence Quantification Analysis of the blazars and directly measure the quantities which suggest that the dynamical processes in blazar could be a combination of deterministic and stochastic processes, while some of the source light curves revealed significant deterministic content. The result with possible implication of strong disk-jet connection in blazars could prove to be significantly useful in constructing models that can explain the rich and complex multi-wavelength observational features in active galactic nuclei. In addition, we estimate the dynamical timescales, so called "trapping timescales", in the order of a few weeks.

Effect of Electromagnetic Interaction on Galactic Center Flare Components

Recently, near-infrared GRAVITY@ESO observations at $2.2\,μ{\rm m}$ have announced the detection of three bright "flares" in the vicinity of the Galactic center supermassive black hole (SMBH) that exhibited orbital motion at a distance of about $6 - 11$ gravitational radii from an $\sim 4\times 10^6\, M_{\odot}$ black hole. There are indications of the presence of a large-scale, organized component of the magnetic field at the Galactic center. Electromagnetic effects on the flare dynamics were previously not taken into account despite the relativistic motion of a plasma in magnetic field leading to the charge separation and nonnegligible net charge density in the plasma. Applying various approaches, we find the net charge number density of the flare components of the order of $10^{-3} - 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$, while the particles' total number density is of the order of $10^{6} - 10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$. However, even such a tiny excess of charged particles in the quasi-neutral plasma can significantly affect the dynamics of flare components, which can then lead to the degeneracy in the measurements of spin of the SMBH. Analyzing the dynamics of recent flares in the case of the rapidly rotating black hole, we also constrain the inclination angle between the magnetic field and spin axis to $α< 50^{\circ}$, as for larger angles, the motion of the hot spot is strongly chaotic.

Radial instability of trapping polytropic spheres

We complete the stability study of general relativistic spherically symmetric polytropic perfect fluid spheres, concentrating attention to the newly discovered polytropes containing region of trapped null geodesics. We compare the methods of treating the dynamical stability based on the equation governing infinitesimal radial pulsations of the polytropes and the related Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation for the eigenmodes governing the pulsations, to the methods of stability analysis based on the energetic considerations. Both methods are applied to determine the stability of the polytropes governed by the polytropic index n in the whole range 0 < n < 5, and the relativistic parameter σ given by the ratio of the central pressure and energy density, restricted by the causality limit. The critical values of the adiabatic index for stability are determined, together with the critical values of the relativistic parameter σ. For the dynamical approach we implemented a numerical method which is independent on the choice of the trial function, and compare its results with the standard trial function approach. We found that the energetic and dynamic method give nearly the same critical values of σ. We found that all the configurations having trapped null geodesics are unstable according to both methods.

Radiative Penrose process: Energy Gain by a Single Radiating Charged Particle in the Ergosphere of Rotating Black Hole

We demonstrate an extraordinary effect of energy gain by a single radiating charged particle inside the ergosphere of a Kerr black hole in presence of magnetic field. We solve numerically the covariant form of the Lorentz-Dirac equation reduced from the DeWitt-Brehme equation and analyze energy evolution of the radiating charged particle inside the ergosphere, where the energy of emitted radiation can be negative with respect to a distant observer in dependence on the relative orientation of the magnetic field, black hole spin and the direction of the charged particle motion. Consequently, the charged particle can leave the ergosphere with energy greater than initial in expense of black hole's rotational energy. In contrast to the original Penrose process and its various modification, the new process does not require the interactions (collisions or decay) with other particles and consequent restrictions on the relative velocities between fragments. We show that such a Radiative Penrose effect is potentially observable and discuss its possible relevance in formation of relativistic jets and in similar high-energy astrophysical settings.

Supermassive black holes as possible sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays

Production and acceleration mechanisms of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) of energy $>10^{20}$eV, clearly beyond the GZK-cutoff limit remain unclear that points to exotic nature of the phenomena. Recent observations of extragalactic neutrino may indicate the source of UHECRs being an extragalactic supermassive black hole (SMBH). We demonstrate that ultra-efficient energy extraction from rotating SMBH driven by the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) could indeed foot the bill. We envision ionization of neutral particles, such as neutron beta-decay, skirting close to the black hole horizon that energizes protons to over $10^{20}$eV for SMBH of mass $10^9 M_{\odot}$ and magnetic field of strength $10^4$G. Applied to Galactic center SMBH we have proton energy of order $\approx 10^{15.6}$eV that coincides with the knee of the cosmic ray spectra. We show that large $γ_z$ factors of high-energy particles along the escaping directions occur only in the presence of induced charge of the black hole that is known as the Wald charge in the case of uniform magnetic field. It is remarkable that the process neither requires extended acceleration zone, nor fine-tuning of accreting matter parameters. Further, this leads to certain verifiable constraints on SMBH's mass and magnetic field strength as UHECRs sources. This clearly makes ultra-efficient regime of MPP one of the most promising mechanisms for fueling UHECRs powerhouse.

Constraining the charge of the Galactic centre black hole

In this contribution, we summarize our results concerning the observational constraints on the electric charge associated with the Galactic centre black hole - Sgr A*. According to the no-hair theorem, every astrophysical black hole, including supermassive black holes, is characterized by at most three classical, externally observable parameters - mass, spin, and the electric charge. While the mass and the spin have routinely been measured by several methods, the electric charge has usually been neglected, based on the arguments of efficient discharge in astrophysical plasmas. From a theoretical point of view, the black hole can attain charge due to the mass imbalance between protons and electrons in fully ionized plasmas, which yields about $\sim 10^8\,{\rm C}$ for Sgr A*. The second, induction mechanism concerns rotating Kerr black holes embedded in an external magnetic field, which leads to electric field generation due to the twisting of magnetic field lines. This electric field can be associated with the induced Wald charge, for which we calculate the upper limit of $\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm C}$ for Sgr A*. Although the maximum theoretical limit of $\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm C}$ is still 12 orders of magnitude smaller than the extremal charge of Sgr A*, we analyse a few astrophysical consequences of having a black hole with a small charge in the Galactic centre. Two most prominent ones are the effect on the X-ray bremsstrahlung profile and the effect on the position of the innermost stable circular orbit.

Circular orbits and related quasi-harmonic oscillatory motion of charged particles around weakly magnetized rotating black holes

We study motion of charged particles in the field of a rotating black hole immersed into an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field, focusing on the epicyclic quasi-circular orbits near the equatorial plane. Separating the circular orbits into four qualitatively different classes according to the sign of the canonical angular momentum of the motion and the orientation of the Lorentz force, we analyse the circular orbits using the so called force formalism. We find the analytical solutions for the radial profiles of velocity, specific angular momentum and specific energy of the circular orbits in dependence on the black hole dimensionless spin and the magnetic field strength. The innermost stable circular orbits are determined for all four classes of the circular orbits. The stable circular orbits with outward oriented Lorentz force can extend to radii lower than the radius of the corresponding photon circular geodesic. We calculate the frequencies of the harmonic oscillatory motion of the charged particles in the radial and vertical directions related to the equatorial circular orbits and study the radial profiles of the radial, $ω_\mir$, vertical, $ω_\mit$, and orbital, $ω_\mip$, frequencies, finding significant differences in comparison to the epicyclic geodesic circular motion. The most important new phenomenon is existence of toroidal charged particle epicyclic motion with $ω_\mir \sim ω_{\mit} >> ω_{\mip}$ that could occur around retrograde circular orbits with outward oriented Lorentz force. We demonstrate that for the rapidly rotating black holes the role of the 'Wald induced charge' can be relevant.

Constraining models of twin peak quasi-periodic oscillations with realistic neutron star equations of state

Twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed in the X-ray power-density spectra of several accreting low-mass neutron star (NS) binaries. In our previous work we have considered several QPO models. We have identified and explored mass-angular-momentum relations implied by individual QPO models for the atoll source 4U 1636-53. In this paper we extend our study and confront QPO models with various NS equations of state (EoS). We start with simplified calculations assuming Kerr background geometry and then present results of detailed calculations considering the influence of NS quadrupole moment (related to rotationally induced NS oblateness) assuming Hartle-Thorne spacetimes. We show that the application of concrete EoS together with a particular QPO model yields a specific mass-angular-momentum relation. However, we demonstrate that the degeneracy in mass and angular momentum can be removed when the NS spin frequency inferred from the X-ray burst observations is considered. We inspect a large set of EoS and discuss their compatibility with the considered QPO models. We conclude that when the NS spin frequency in 4U 1636-53 is close to 580Hz we can exclude 51 from 90 of the considered combinations of EoS and QPO models. We also discuss additional restrictions that may exclude even more combinations. Namely, there are 13 EOS compatible with the observed twin peak QPOs and the relativistic precession model. However, when considering the low frequency QPOs and Lense-Thirring precession, only 5 EOS are compatible with the model.

Controversy of the GRO J1655-40 black hole mass and spin estimates and its possible solutions

Estimates of the black hole mass $M$ and dimensionless spin $a$ in the microquasar GRO J1655-40 implied by strong gravity effects related to the timing and spectral measurements are controversial, if the mass restriction determined by the dynamics related to independent optical measurements, $M_{\rm opt}=(5.4\pm0.3) M_{\odot}$, are applied. The timing measurements of twin high-frequency (HF) quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequency ratio $3:2$ and the simultaneously observed low-frequency (LF) QPO imply the spin in the range $a\in(0.27-0.29)$ if models based on the frequencies of the geodesic epicyclic motion are used to fit the timing measurements, and correlated creation of the twin HF QPOs and the LF QPO at a common radius is assumed. On the other hand, the spectral continuum method implies $a\in(0.65-0.75)$, and the Fe-line-profile method implies $a\in(0.94-0.98)$. This controversy can be cured, if we abandon the assumption of the occurrence of the twin HF QPOs and the simultaneously observed LF QPO at a common radius. We demonstrate that the epicyclic resonance model of the twin HF QPOs is able to predict the spin in agreement with the Fe-profile method, but no model based on the geodesic epicyclic frequencies can be in agreement with the spectral continuum method. We also show that the non-geodesic string loop oscillation model of twin HF QPOs predicts spin $a>0.3$ under the optical measurement limit on the black hole mass, in agreement with both the spectral continuum and Fe-profile methods.

Efficiency of the Keplerian accretion in the Braneworld Kerr--Newman Spacetimes and mining instability of some naked singularity spacetimes

We show that the~braneworld rotating Kerr--Newman black hole and naked singularity spacetimes with both positive and negative braneworld tidal charge parameter can be separated into fourteen classes according to properties of circular geodesics governing the~Keplerian accretion. We determine efficiency of the~Keplerian accretion disks for all braneworld Kerr--Newman spacetimes. We demonstrate occurrence of an~infinitely deep gravitational potential in Kerr--Newman naked singularity spacetimes having the~braneworld dimensionless tidal charge $b \in (1/4,1)$ and the~dimensionless spin $a \in (2\sqrt{b}-\sqrt{b(4b-1)},2\sqrt{b}+\sqrt{b(4b-1)})$, implying unbound efficiency of the~Keplerian accretion and possibility to extract the~whole naked singularity mass. Therefore, we call them braneworld "mining-unstable" Kerr--Newman naked singularity spacetimes. Fundamental restriction on the~relevance of the~extraordinary but fully classical phenomenon of the~mining instability is given by validity of the~assumption of geodesic motion of the~accreting matter.

General relativistic polytropes with a repulsive cosmological constant

Spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations of perfect fluid obeying a polytropic equation of state are studied in spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant. The configurations are specified in terms of three parameters---the polytropic index $n$, the ratio of central pressure and central energy density of matter $σ$, and the ratio of energy density of vacuum and central density of matter $λ$. The static equilibrium configurations are determined by two coupled first-order nonlinear differential equations that are solved by numerical methods with the exception of polytropes with $n=0$ corresponding to the configurations with a uniform distribution of energy density, when the solution is given in terms of elementary functions. The geometry of the polytropes is conveniently represented by embedding diagrams of both the ordinary space geometry and the optical reference geometry reflecting some dynamical properties of the geodesic motion. The polytropes are represented by radial profiles of energy density, pressure, mass, and metric coefficients. For all tested values of $n>0$, the static equilibrium configurations with fixed parameters $n$, $σ$, are allowed only up to a critical value of the cosmological parameter $λ_{\mathrm{c}}=λ_{\mathrm{c}}(n,σ)$. In the case of $n>3$, the critical value $λ_{\mathrm{c}}$ tends to zero for special values of $σ$. The gravitational potential energy and the binding energy of the polytropes are determined and studied by numerical methods. We discuss in detail the polytropes with an extension comparable to those of the dark matter halos related to galaxies, i.e., with extension $\ell > 100\,\mathrm{kpc}$ and mass $M > 10^{12}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. ...

Mass of intermediate black hole in the source M82 X-1 restricted by models of twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations

We apply the relativistic precession (RP) model with its variants and the resonance epicyclic model with its variants, based on the frequencies of the geodesic epicyclic motion in the field of a Kerr black hole, to put limits on the mass of the black hole in the ultraluminous X-ray source M82 X-1 demonstrating twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) with the frequency ratio near 3:2. The mass limits implied by the geodesic HF QPO models are compared to those obtained due to the model of string loop oscillations around a stable equilibrium position. Assuming the whole range of the black hole dimensionless spin, 0 < a < 1, the restrictions on the black hole mass related to the twin HF QPOs are widely extended and strongly model dependent; nevertheless, they give the lower limit M_{M82 X-1} > 130 M_{sun} confirming existence of an intermediate black hole in the M82 X-1 source. The upper limit given by one of the variants of the geodesic twin HF QPO models goes up to M_{M82 X-1}<1500 M_{sun}. The range 37-210 mHz of the low-frequency QPOs observed in the M82 X-1 source introduces additional restrictive limits on the black hole mass, if we model the low-frequency QPOs by nodal precession of the epicyclic motion. The nodal precession model restrictions combined with those implied by the geodesic models of the twin HF QPOs give allowed ranges of the M82 X-1 black hole parameters, namely 140 M_{sun}<M_{M82 X-1}<660 M_{sun} for the mass parameter and 0.05<a_{M82 X-1}<0.6 for the spin parameter.

Models of quasi-periodic oscillations related to mass and spin of the GRO J1655-40 black hole

Frequencies of the three quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) modes observed simultaneously in the accreting black hole GRO J1655-40 are compared with the predictions of models. Models in which all three QPO signals are produced at the same radius are considered: these include different versions of relativistic precession, epicyclic resonance, tidal disruption, and warped disc models. Models that were originally proposed to interpret only the twin high-frequency QPOs are generalized here to interpret also the low-frequency QPO in terms of relativistic nodal precession. Inferred values of the black hole mass and spin from each QPO model are compared with the mass measured from optical observations and the spin inferred from X-ray spectroscopy techniques. We find that along with the relativistic precession model predicting $M=(5.3\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.286\pm0.004$, the so-called total precession model ($M=(5.5\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.276\pm0.003$), and the resonance epicyclic model with beat frequency ($M=(5.1\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.274\pm0.003$) also satisfy the optical mass test. We compare our results with those inferred from X-ray spectral measurements.

Quasinormal frequencies of black hole in the braneworld

We have studied scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-like black holes with a \textit{tidal charge} in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. The quasinormal modes of these scalar, electromagnetic, as well as axial and polar gravitational perturbations, have been studied in both normal and eikonal regimes. Calculations have shown that the black holes on the Randall-Sundrum brane are stable against scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations. Moreover, we determine the grey body factor, giving transmission and reflection of the scattered waves through the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational effective potentials. It has been shown that the scalar perturbative fields are the most favorite to the reflected as compared to the latter. With increasing value of the tidal charge ability of the all perturbative potentials to reflect the waves decreases. Our calculations in low- and high-frequency regimes have shown that black holes on the braneworld always have a bigger absorption cross section of massless scalar waves than the Schwarzschild and standard Reissner-Nordström black holes.

Acceleration of charged particles due to chaotic scattering in the combined black hole gravitational field and asymptotically uniform magnetic field

To test the role of large-scale magnetic fields in accretion processes, we study dynamics of charged test particles in vicinity of a black hole immersed into an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. Using the Hamiltonian formalism of charged particle dynamics, we examine chaotic scattering in the effective potential related to the black hole gravitational field combined with the uniform magnetic field. Energy interchange between the translational and oscillatory modes od the charged particle dynamics provides mechanism for charged particle acceleration along the magnetic field lines. This energy transmutation is an attribute of the chaotic charged particle dynamics in the combined gravitational and magnetic fields only, the black hole rotation is not necessary for such charged particle acceleration. The chaotic scatter can cause transition to the motion along the magnetic field lines with small radius of the Larmor motion or vanishing Larmor radius, when the speed of the particle translational motion is largest and can be ultra-relativistic. We discuss consequences of the model of ionization of test particles forming a neutral accretion disc, or heavy ions following off-equatorial circular orbits, and we explore the fate of heavy charged test particles after ionization where no kick of heavy ions is assumed and only switch-on effect of the magnetic field is relevant. We demonstrate that acceleration and escape of the ionized particles can be efficient along the Kerr black hole symmetry axis parallel to the magnetic field lines. We show that strong acceleration of ionized particles to ultra-relativistic velocities is preferred in the direction close to the magnetic field lines. Therefore, the process of ionization of Keplerian discs around Kerr black holes can serve as a model of relativistic jets.

Energetics and optical properties of $6$-dimensional rotating black hole in pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study physical processes around a rotating black hole in pure Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. In pure GB gravity, gravitational potential has slower fall off as compared to the corresponding Einstein potential in the same dimension. It is therefore expected that the energetics of pure GB black hole would be weaker, and our analysis bears out that the efficiency of energy extraction by Penrose process is increased to $25.8\%$ and particle acceleration is increased to $55.28\%$, and optical shadow of the black hole is decreased. These are the distinguishing in principle observable features of pure GB black hole.

Hořava's quantum gravity illustrated by embedding diagrams of the Kehagias-Sfetsos spacetimes

Possible astrophysical consequences of the Hořava quantum gravity theory have been recently studied by several authors. They usually employ the Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) spacetime which is a spherically symmetric vacuum solution of a specific version of Hořava's gravity. The KS metric has several unusual geometrical properties that in the present article we examine by means of the often used technique of embedding diagrams. We pay particular attention to the transition between naked singularity and black-hole states, which is possible along some particular sequences of the KS metrics.

Quasi-harmonic oscillatory motion of charged particles around a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in an uniform magnetic field

In order to test the role of large-scale magnetic fields in quasiperiodic oscillation phenomena observed in microquasars, we study oscillatory motion of charged particles in vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole immersed into an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field. We determine the fundamental frequencies of small harmonic oscillations of charged test particles around stable circular orbits in the equatorial plane of a magnetized black hole, and discuss the radial profiles of frequencies of the radial and latitudinal harmonic oscillations in dependence on the mass of the black hole and the strength of the magnetic field. We demonstrate that assuming relevance of resonant phenomena of the radial and latitudinal oscillations of charged particles at their frequency ratio $3:2$, the oscillatory frequencies of charged particles can be well related to the frequencies of the twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the microquasars GRS 1915+105, XTE 1550-564 and GRO 1655-40.

Quasinormal modes of test fields around regular black holes

We study scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational test fields in the Hayward, Bardeen and Ayón-Beato-García regular black hole spacetimes and demonstrate that the test fields are stable in all these spacetimes. Using the sixth order WKB approximation of the linear "axial" perturbative scheme, we determine dependence of the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies on the characteristic parameters of the test fields and the spacetime charge parameters of the regular black holes. We give also the greybody factors, namely the transmission and reflection coefficients of scattered scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational waves. We show that damping of the QNMs in regular black hole spacetimes is suppressed in comparison to the case of Schwarzschild black holes, and increasing charge parameter of the regular black holes increases reflection and decreases transmission factor of incident waves for each of the test fields.

Rotating black hole solutions with quintessential energy

Quintessential dark energy with density $ρ$ and pressure $p$ is governed by an equation of state of the form $p=-ω_{q}ρ$ with the quintessential parameter $ω_q\in(-1;-1/3)$. We derive the geometry of quintessential rotating black holes, generalizing thus the Kerr spacetimes. Then we study the quintessential rotating black hole spacetimes with the special value of $ω_q = -2/3$ when the resulting formulae are simple and easily tractable. We show that such special spacetimes can exist for dimensionless quintessential parameter $c<1/6$ and determine the critical rotational parameter $a_0$ separating the black hole and naked singularity spacetime in dependence on the quintessential parameter $c$. For the spacetimes with $ω_q = 2/3$ we present the integrated geodesic equations in separated form and study in details the circular geodetical orbits. We give radii and parameters of the photon circular orbits, marginally bound and marginally stable orbits. We stress that the outer boundary on the existence of circular geodesics, given by the so called static radius where the gravitational attraction of the black hole is balanced by the cosmic repulsion, does not depend on the dimensionless spin of the rotating black hole, similarly to the case of the Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes with vacuum dark energy. We also give restrictions on the dimensionless parameters $c$ and $a$ of the spacetimes allowing for existence of stable circular geodesics.

Shadow of the rotating black hole with quintessential energy in the presence of the plasma

We study the shadow of the rotating black hole with quintessential energy i) in vacuum and ii) in the presence of plasma with radial power-law density. For vacuum case the quintessential field parameter of the rotating black hole sufficiently changes the shape of the shadow. With the increasing the quintessential field parameter the radius of the shadow also increases. With the increase of the radius of the shadow of the rotating black hole the quintessential field parameter causes decrease of the distortion of the shadow shape: In the presence of the quintessential field parameter the shadow of fast rotating black hole starting to become more close to circle. The shape and size of shadow of quintessential rotating black hole surrounded by plasma depends on i) plasma parameters, ii) black hole spin and iii) quintessential field parameter. With the increase of the plasma refraction index the apparent radius of the shadow increases. However, for the big values of the quintessential field parameter the change of the black hole shadow's shape due to the presence of plasma is not sufficient. In other words: the effect of the quintessential field parameter becomes more dominant with compare to the effect of plasma.

Test of the string loop oscillation model using kHz quasiperiodic oscillations in a neutron star binary

The model of current-carrying string loop oscillations is tested to explain the special set of frequencies related to the high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs) observed recently in the low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-407 containing a neutron star. The external geometry of the neutron star is approximated by the Kerr geometry, introducing errors not exceeding $10~\%$ for slowly rotating massive neutron stars. The frequencies of the radial and vertical string loop oscillations are then governed by the mass $M$ and dimensionless spin $a$ of the neutron star, and by the dimensionless parameter $ω$ describing combined effects of the string loop tension and its angular momentum. It is explicitly demonstrated that the string-loop oscillation model can explain the observed kHz frequencies for the neutron star parameters restricted to the intervals ${0.2<a<0.4}$ and ${2.1<M/{\rm M}_{\odot}<2.5}$. However, the stringy parameter $ω$ cannot be the same for all the three HF QPO observations in the XTE J1701-407 source; the limits on the acceptable values of $ω$ are given in dependence on the spacetime parameters $M$ and $a$.

Acceleration of electric current-carrying string loop near a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field

We study the acceleration of an electric current-carrying and axially-symmetric string loop initially oscillating in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole embedded in an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field. The plane of the string loop is orthogonal to the magnetic field lines and the acceleration of the string loop occurs due to the transmutation effect turning in the deep gravitational field the internal energy of the oscillating strings to the energy of their translational motion along the axis given by the symmetry of the black hole spacetime and the magnetic field. We restrict our attention to the motion of string loop with energy high enough, when it can overcome the gravitational attraction and escape to infinity. We demonstrate that for the current-carrying string loop the transmutation effect is enhanced by the contribution of the interaction between the electric current of the string loop and the external magnetic field and we give conditions that have to be fulfilled for an efficient acceleration. The Schwarzschild black hole combined with the strong external magnetic field can accelerate the current-carrying string loop up to the velocities close to the speed of light $v \sim c$. Therefore, the string loop transmutation effect can potentially well serve as an explanation for acceleration of highly relativistic jets observed in microquasars and active galactic nuclei.

Electrically charged matter in rigid rotation around magnetized black hole

We study charged-fluid toroidal structures surrounding a non-rotating charged black hole immersed in a large-scale, asymptotically uniform magnetic field. In continuation of our former study on electrically charged matter in approximation of zero conductivity, we demonstrate existence of orbiting structures in permanent rigid rotation in the equatorial plane, and charged clouds hovering near the symmetry axis. We constrain the range of parameters that allow stable configurations and derive the geometrical shape of equi-pressure surfaces. Our simplified analytical study suggests that these regions of stability may be relevant for trapping electrically charged particles and dust grains in some areas of the black hole magnetosphere, being thus important in some astrophysical situations.

Perfect fluid tori orbiting Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularities

We construct perfect fluid tori in the field of the Kehagias-Sfetsos (K-S) naked singularity representing spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the modified Hořava quantum gravity that is characterized by a dimensionless parameter $ωM^2$, combining the gravitational mass parameter $M$ of the spacetime with the Hořava parameter $ω$ reflecting the role of the quantum corrections. In dependence on the value of $ωM^2$, the K-S naked singularities demonstrate a variety of qualitatively different behavior of their circular geodesics that is fully reflected in the properties of the toroidal structures. In all of the K-S naked singularity spacetimes the tori are located above an "antigravity" sphere where matter can stay in stable equilibrium position, that is relevant for the stability of the orbiting fluid toroidal accretion structures.

String loops oscillating in the field of Kerr black holes as a possible explanation of twin high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations observed in microquasars

Small oscillations of current-carrying string loops around stable equilibrium positions corresponding to minima of the effective potential in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black holes are studied using the perturbation method. In the lowest approximation, two uncoupled harmonic oscillators are obtained that govern the radial and vertical oscillations; the higher-order terms determine non-linear phenomena and transition to chaotic motion through quasi-periodic stages of the oscillatory motion. The radial profiles of frequencies of the radial and vertical harmonic oscillations that are relevant also in the quasi-periodic stages of the oscillatory motion are given, and their properties in dependence on the spin of the black holes and the angular momentum and tension of the string loops are determined. It is shown that the radial profiles differ substantially from those corresponding to the radial and vertical frequencies of the geodetical epicyclic motion; however, they have the same mass-scaling and their magnitude is of the same order. Therefore, we are able to demonstrate that assuming relevance of resonant phenomena of the radial and vertical string-loop oscillations at their frequency ratio 3:2, the oscillatory frequencies of string loops can be well related to the frequencies of the twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) observed in the microquasars GRS 1915+105, XTE 1550-564, GRO 1655-40. We can conclude that oscillating current-carrying string loops have to be considered as one of the possible explanations of the HF QPOs occurring in the field of compact objects.

Acceleration of particles in spacetimes of black string

The particle acceleration mechanism in $S^2 \times\mathbb{R}^1$ topology, namely in the spacetime of the five-dimensional compact black string has been studied. The expression of center-of-mass energy of the colliding neutral particles near static black string has been found. The collision of charged particle moving at the innermost stable circular orbit with neutral particle coming from infinity have been considered when black string is immersed in external uniform magnetic field. It has been shown that the unlimited center-of-mass energy can be approached in case of the extremal rotation of the black string which is similar to the analogous effect in the Kerr spacetime. We have also obtained that the scattering energy of particles in the center-of-mass system can take arbitrary large values not only for extremal black string but also for nonextremal one. It has been derived that the presence of the extra dimension can, in principle, increase the upper limit of efficiency of energy extraction from the extremely rotating black string up to $203\%$ versus to $143\%$ which can be extracted from the extreme Kerr black hole.

Circular geodesics of naked singularities in the Kehagias-Sfetsos metric of Hořava's gravity

We discuss photon and test-particle orbits in the Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) metric. For any value of the Hořava parameter $ω$, there are values of the gravitational mass $M$ for which the metric describes a naked singularity, and this is always accompanied by a vacuum "antigravity sphere" on whose surface a test particle can remain at rest (in a zero angular momentum geodesic), and inside which no circular geodesics exist. The observational appearance of an accreting KS naked singularity in a binary system would be that of a quasi-static spherical fluid shell surrounded by an accretion disk, whose properties depend on the value of $M$, but are always very different from accretion disks familiar from the Kerr-metric solutions. The properties of the corresponding circular orbits are qualitatively similar to those of the Reissner-Nordström naked singularities. When event horizons are present, the orbits outside the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole are qualitatively similar to those of the Schwarzschild metric.

Kinetic theory of equilibrium axisymmetric collisionless plasmas in off-equatorial tori around compact objects

The possible occurrence of equilibrium off-equatorial tori in the gravitational and electromagnetic fields of astrophysical compact objects has been recently proved based on non-ideal MHD theory. These stationary structures can represent plausible candidates for the modelling of coronal plasmas expected to arise in association with accretion discs. However, accretion disc coronae are formed by a highly diluted environment, and so the fluid description may be inappropriate. The question is posed of whether similar off-equatorial solutions can be determined also in the case of collisionless plasmas for which treatment based on kinetic theory, rather than fluid one, is demanded. In this paper the issue is addressed in the framework of the Vlasov-Maxwell description for non-relativistic multi-species axisymmetric plasmas subject to an external dominant spherical gravitational and dipolar magnetic field. Equilibrium configurations are investigated and explicit solutions for the species kinetic distribution function are constructed, which are expressed in terms of generalized Maxwellian functions characterized by isotropic temperature and non-uniform fluid fields. The conditions for the existence of off-equatorial tori are investigated. It is proved that these levitating systems are admitted under general conditions when both gravitational and magnetic fields contribute to shaping the spatial profiles of equilibrium plasma fluid fields. Then, specifically-kinetic effects carried by the equilibrium solution are explicitly provided and identified here with diamagnetic, energy-correction and electrostatic contributions. It is shown that these kinetic terms characterize the plasma equation of state by introducing non-vanishing deviations from the assumption of thermal pressure.

Current-carrying string loops in black-hole spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant

Current-carrying string loop dynamics in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes characterized by the cosmological parameter λ=1/3ΛM^2 is investigated. With attention concentrated to the axisymmetric motion of string loops it is shown that the resulting motion is governed by the presence of an outer tension barrier and an inner angular momentum barrier that are influenced by the black hole gravitational field given by the mass M and the cosmic repulsion given by the cosmological constant Λ. The gravitational attraction could cause capturing of the string having low energy by the black hole or trapping in its vicinity; with high enough energy, the string can escape (scatter) to infinity. The role of the cosmic repulsion becomes important in vicinity of the so-called static radius where the gravitational attraction is balanced by the cosmic repulsion-it is demonstrated both in terms of the effective potential of the string motion and the basin boundary method reflecting its chaotic character, that a potential barrier exists along the static radius behind which no trapped oscillations may exist. The trapped states of the string loops, governed by the interplay of the gravitating mass M and the cosmic repulsion, are allowed only in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with the cosmological parameter λ<λ_trap 0.00497. The trapped oscillations can extend close to the radius of photon circular orbit, down to r_mt 3.3M.

Role of electric charge in shaping equilibrium configurations of fluid tori encircling black holes

Astrophysical fluids may acquire non-zero electrical charge because of strong irradiation or charge separation in a magnetic field. In this case, electromagnetic and gravitational forces may act together and produce new equilibrium configurations, which are different from the uncharged ones. Following our previous studies of charged test particles and uncharged perfect fluid tori encircling compact objects, we introduce here a simple test model of a charged perfect fluid torus in strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields. In contrast to ideal magnetohydrodynamic models, we consider here the opposite limit of negligible conductivity, where the charges are tied completely to the moving matter. This is an extreme limiting case which can provide a useful reference against which to compare subsequent more complicated astrophysically-motivated calculations. To clearly demonstrate the features of our model, we construct three-dimensional axisymmetric charged toroidal configurations around Reissner-Nordström black holes and compare them with equivalent configurations of electrically neutral tori.

Recurrence plots and chaotic motion around Kerr black hole

We study the motion of charged test particles around a Kerr black hole immersed in the asymptotically uniform magnetic field, concluding that off-equatorial stable orbits are allowed in this system. Being interested in dynamical properties of these astrophysically relevant orbits we employ rather novel approach based on the analysis of recurrences of the system to the vicinity of its previous states. We use recurrence plots (RPs) as a tool to visualize recurrences of the trajectory in the phase space. Construction of RPs is simple and straightforward regardless of the dimension of the phase space, which is a major advantage of this approach when compared to the "traditional" methods of the numerical analysis of dynamical systems (for instance the visual survey of Poincaré surfaces of section, evaluation of the Lyapunov spectra etc.). We show that RPs and their quantitative measures (obtained from recurrence quantification analysis -- RQA) are powerful tools to detect dynamical regime of motion (regular vs. chaotic) and precisely locate the transitions between these regimes.

Transition from Regular to Chaotic Circulation in Magnetized Coronae near Compact Objects

Accretion onto black holes and compact stars brings material in a zone of strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields. We study dynamical properties of motion of electrically charged particles forming a highly diluted medium (a corona) in the regime of strong gravity and large-scale (ordered) magnetic field. We start our work from a system that allows regular motion, then we focus on the onset of chaos. To this end, we investigate the case of a rotating black hole immersed in a weak, asymptotically uniform magnetic field. We also consider a magnetic star, approximated by the Schwarzschild metric and a test magnetic field of a rotating dipole. These are two model examples of systems permitting energetically bound, off-equatorial motion of matter confined to the halo lobes that encircle the central body. Our approach allows us to address the question of whether the spin parameter of the black hole plays any major role in determining the degree of the chaoticness. To characterize the motion, we construct the Recurrence Plots (RP) and we compare them with Poincaré surfaces of section. We describe the Recurrence Plots in terms of the Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA), which allows us to identify the transition between different dynamical regimes. We demonstrate that this new technique is able to detect the chaos onset very efficiently, and to provide its quantitative measure. The chaos typically occurs when the conserved energy is raised to a sufficiently high level that allows the particles to traverse the equatorial plane. We find that the role of the black-hole spin in setting the chaos is more complicated than initially thought.
