An improved upper bound for the Waring rank of the determinant

The Waring rank of the generic $d \times d$ determinant is bounded above by $d \cdot d!$. This improves previous upper bounds, which were of the form an exponential times the factorial. Our upper bound comes from an explicit power sum decomposition. We describe some of the symmetries of the decomposition and set-theoretic defining equations for the terms of the decomposition.

Apolarity and direct sum decomposability of polynomials

A polynomial is a direct sum if it can be written as a sum of two non-zero polynomials in some distinct sets of variables, up to a linear change of variables. We analyze criteria for a homogeneous polynomial to be decomposable as a direct sum, in terms of the apolar ideal of the polynomial. We prove that the apolar ideal of a polynomial of degree $d$ strictly depending on all variables has a minimal generator of degree $d$ if and only if it is a limit of direct sums.

Some examples of forms of high rank

We describe some forms with greater Waring rank than previous examples. In $3$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater rank than the ranks of monomials, the previously highest known rank. This narrows the possible range of values of the maximum Waring rank of forms in $3$ variables. In $4$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater than generic rank. In degrees greater than or equal to $5$ these are the first examples showing that there exist forms with Waring rank strictly greater than the generic value.

Geometric lower bounds for generalized ranks

We revisit a geometric lower bound for Waring rank of polynomials (symmetric rank of symmetric tensors) of Landsberg and Teitler and generalize it to a lower bound for rank with respect to arbitrary varieties, improving the bound given by the "non-Abelian" catalecticants recently introduced by Landsberg and Ottaviani. This is applied to give lower bounds for ranks of multihomogeneous polynomials (partially symmetric tensors); a special case is the simultaneous Waring decomposition problem for a linear system of polynomials. We generalize the classical Apolarity Lemma to multihomogeneous polynomials and give some more general statements. Finally we revisit the lower bound of Ranestad and Schreyer, and again generalize it to multihomogeneous polynomials and some more general settings.

The monotone secant conjecture in the real Schubert calculus

The monotone secant conjecture posits a rich class of polynomial systems, all of whose solutions are real. These systems come from the Schubert calculus on flag manifolds, and the monotone secant conjecture is a compelling generalization of the Shapiro conjecture for Grassmannians (Theorem of Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko). We present some theoretical evidence for this conjecture, as well as computational evidence obtained by 1.9 teraHertz-years of computing, and we discuss some of the phenomena we observed in our data.

Arithmetic toric varieties

We study toric varieties over a field k that split in a Galois extension K/k using Galois cohomology with coefficients in the toric automorphism group. Part of this Galois cohomology fits into an exact sequence induced by the presentation of the class group of the toric variety. This perspective helps to compute the Galois cohomology, particularly for cyclic Galois groups. We use Galois cohomology to classify k-forms of projective spaces when K/k is cyclic, and we also study k-forms of surfaces.

Waring decompositions of monomials

A Waring decomposition of a polynomial is an expression of the polynomial as a sum of powers of linear forms, where the number of summands is minimal possible. We prove that any Waring decomposition of a monomial is obtained from a complete intersection ideal, determine the dimension of the set of Waring decompositions, and give the conditions under which the Waring decomposition is unique up to scaling the variables.

The Secant Conjecture in the real Schubert calculus

We formulate the Secant Conjecture, which is a generalization of the Shapiro Conjecture for Grassmannians. It asserts that an intersection of Schubert varieties in a Grassmannian is transverse with all points real, if the flags defining the Schubert varieties are secant along disjoint intervals of a rational normal curve. We present theoretical evidence for it as well as computational evidence obtained in over one terahertz-year of computing, and we discuss some phenomena we observed in our data.

Recent developments and open problems in linear series

In the week 3--9, October 2010, the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach hosted a mini workshop Linear Series on Algebraic Varieties. These notes contain a variety of interesting problems which motivated the participants prior to the event, and examples, results and further problems which grew out of discussions during and shortly after the workshop. A lot of arguments presented here are scattered in the literature or constitute folklore. It was one of our aims to have a usable and easily accessible collection of examples and results.

Combinatorial bounds on Hilbert functions of fat points in projective space

We study Hilbert functions of certain non-reduced schemes A supported at finite sets of points in projective space, in particular, fat point schemes. We give combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds for the Hilbert function of A using nothing more than the multiplicities of the points and information about which subsets of the points are linearly dependent. When N=2, we give these bounds explicitly and we give a sufficient criterion for the upper and lower bounds to be equal. When this criterion is satisfied, we give both a simple formula for the Hilbert function and combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds on the graded Betti numbers for the ideal defining A, generalizing results of Geramita-Migliore-Sabourin (2006). We obtain the exact Hilbert functions and graded Betti numbers for many families of examples, interesting combinatorially, geometrically, and algebraically. Our method works in any characteristic. AWK scripts implementing our results can be obtained at http://www.math.unl.edu/~bharbourne1/CHT/Example.html .

The Monodromy Conjecture for hyperplane arrangements

The Monodromy Conjecture asserts that if c is a pole of the local topological zeta function of a hypersurface, then exp(2πi c) is an eigenvalue of the monodromy on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber. A stronger version of the conjecture asserts that every pole is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the hypersurface. In this note we prove the weak version of the conjecture for hyperplane arrangements. Furthermore, we reduce the strong version to the following conjecture: -n/d is always a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of an indecomposable essential central hyperplane arrangement of d hyperplanes in the affine n-space.
