A Simple Hubbard Model for the Excited States of $π$ Conjugated -acene Molecules

In this paper we present a model for the electronic excited states of $π$ conjugated -acene molecules such as tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene. We use a simple Hubbard model with a limited basis to describe the low lying excitations with reasonable quantitative accuracy. We are able to produce semi-analytic wavefunctions for the electronic states of the system, which allows us to compute the density correlation functions for various states such as the ground state, the first two singly excited states, and the lowest lying doubly excited state. We show that in this lowest lying doubly excited state, a state speculated to play a role in the singlet fission process, the electrons and holes behave in a triplet-like manner. We also compute the two-photon absorption of these -acenes, and show that per number density it is comparable to that of other organic molecules such as coronene and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC).

A Simple Hubbard Model for the Excited States of Dibenzoterrylene

We use a simple Hubbard model to characterize the electronic excited states of the dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecule; we compute the excited state transition energies and oscillator strengths from the ground state to several singlet excited states. We consider the lowest singlet and triplet states of the molecule, examine their wavefunctions, and compute the density correlation functions that describe these states. We find that the DBT ground state is mostly a closed shell singlet with very slight radical character. We predict a relatively small singlet-triplet splitting of 0.75 eV, which is less than the mid-sized -acenes but larger than literature predictions for this state; this is because the Hubbard interaction makes a very small correction to the singlet and triplet states.

Non-Trivial Excited State Coherence Due to Two Uncorrelated Partially Coherent Fields

We analyze a model where a closed $V$ system is excited by two uncorrelated partially coherent fields. We use a collisionally broadened CW laser, which is a good model for an experimentally realizable partially coherent field, and show that it is possible to generate excited state coherences even if the two fields are uncorrelated. This transient coherence can be increased if splitting between the excited states is reduced relative to the radiation coherence time, $τ_{d}$. For small excited state splitting, one can use this scheme to generate a long lived coherent response in the system.

Reinvigorating Excited State Coherences in $V$ Level Systems with the use of Trap States

We investigate potential schemes to reinvigorate coherences between excited states in a $V$ level system under various excitation conditions. Coherent pulsed, cw and noisy pulsed excitation are considered and the existence of a trap state is shown to allow for the resurgence of excited state coherence in the two pulsed scenarios. With a short trap time (strong decoherence), it is possible to restart excited state coherence in the pulsed scenarios. In the case of cw excitation with relaxation back to the ground state, the coherences between the excited states do not vanish in the long time limit but instead approach a non-zero value.

Transient Quantum Coherent Response to a Partially Coherent Radiation Field

The response of an arbitrary closed quantum system to a partially coherent electric field is investigated, with a focus on the transient coherences in the system. As a model we examine, both perturbatively and numerically, the coherences induced in a three level $V$ system. Both rapid turn-on and pulsed turn-on effects are investigated. The effect of a long and incoherent pulse is also considered, demonstrating that during the pulse the system shows a coherent response which reduces after the pulse is over. Both the pulsed scenario and the thermally broadened CW case approach a mixed state in the long time limit, with rates dictated by the adjacent level spacings and the coherence time of the light, and via a mechanism that is distinctly difference from traditional decoherence. These two excitation scenarios are also explored for a minimal "toy" model of the electronic levels in pigment protein complex PC645 by both a collisionally broadened CW laser and by a noisy pulse, where unexpectedly long transient coherence times are observed and explained. The significance of environmentally induced decoherence is noted.
