Electromagnetic Vortex solitons in the magnetospheres of super-Eddington AGN

Propagation and dynamics of electromagnetic vortex solitons have been studied in the electron positron ion plasmas of super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGN). Existence and stability of such structures is demonstrated for highly transparent AGN plasma media. Possible implications of dynamical features and corresponding observational signatures are discussed.

On a spectral pattern of the Von-Neumann probes

In this paper we have extended our previous work \citep{probe1} and considered spectral characteristics of interstellar non-relativistic Type-II and Type-III Von-Neumann probes. It has been shown that by means of the proton capture, required for replication, strong bremstrahlung emission will be generated. We have found that for both types of civilizations the probes might be visible mainly in the infrared spectral band, but as it has been found the probes might be visible in the ultraviolet as well. For both cases it was shown that differential power has dips for equally spaced frequencies, which might be a significant fingerprint to identify such exotic interstellar objects.

Synchrotron emission from the depths of pulsar magnetospheres

In this paper we study the generation of high energy emission from normal pulsars. For this purpose we consider the particles accelerated in the outer magnetosphere sliding along the closed magnetic field lines. It has been shown that in due course of motion the initial small pitch angle increases and at a certain distance from the neutron star the synchrotron emission becomes significant. We found that a region covered from $150$ to $500$ stellar radii the emission pattern is characterised by energies in the interval $(0.1-10)$ MeV.

On the interstellar Von Neumann micro self-reproducing probes

In this paper we consider efficiency of self-reproducing extraterrestrial Von-Neumann micro scale robots and analyse the observational characteristics. By examining the natural scenario of moving in the HII clouds, it has been found that the timescale of replication might be several years and even less - making the process of observation quite promising. We have shown that by encountering the interstellar protons the probes might be visible at least in the infrared energy band and the corresponding luminosities might reach enormous values.

Pulsed VHE emission from the Crab Pulsar in the context of magnetocentrifugal particle acceleration

The Crab Pulsar has been recently detected at very high energies (VHE) with its pulsed VHE emission reaching up to $1.5$ TeV. The VHE peaks appear synchronised with the peaks at GeV energies and show VHE spectra following hard power-law functions. These new findings have been interpreted as evidence for a gamma-ray production that happens very close to the light cylinder. Motivated by these experimental results we consider the efficiency of magnetocentrifugal particle acceleration in the magnetosphere of the Crab Pulsar, reexamining and extending results obtained in a previous work (Osmanov & Rieger 2009). It is shown that efficient magnetocentrifugal acceleration close to the light cylinder could provide the required electron Lorentz factors of $5\times 10^6$ and that the resulting inverse Compton (IC) scattering off thermal photons might explain the enigmatic TeV emission of the pulsar. We estimate the corresponding VHE luminosity and provide a derivation of its spectral characteristics, that appear remarkably close to the observational results to encourage further studies.

Electrostatic ion perturbations in kinematically complex shear flows

The scope of the present paper is to determine how ion electrostatic wave perturbations in plasma flows are influenced by the presence of a kinematically complex velocity shear. For this purpose we consider a model based on the following set of physical equations: the equation of motion, the continuity equation and the Poisson equation for the electric potential governing the evolution of the system. After linearizing the equations, we solve them numerically. We find out that for a variety of specific values of parameters the system may exhibit quite interesting dynamic behaviour. In particular, we demonstrate that the system exhibits two different kinds of shear flow instabilities: (a)~when the wave vectors evolve exponentially, the ion sound modes become unstable as well; while, (b)~on the other hand, one can find areas in a parametric space where, when the wave vectors vary periodically, the physical system is subject to a strongly pronounced parametric instability. We also show the possibility of the generation of beat wave phenomena, characterized by a noteworthy quasi-periodic temporal behaviour. In the conclusion, we discuss the possible areas of applications and further directions of generalization of the presented work.

Millisecond newly born pulsars as efficient accelerators of electrons

The newly born millisecond pulsars are investigated as possible energy sources for creating ultra-high energy electrons. The transfer of energy from the star rotation to high energy electrons takes place through the Landau damping of centrifugally driven (via a two stream instability) electrostatic Langmuir waves. Generated in the bulk magnetosphere plasma, such waves grow to high amplitudes, and then damp, very effectively, on relativistic electrons driving them to even higher energies. We show that the rate of transfer of energy is so efficient that no energy losses might affect the mechanism of particle acceleration; the electrons might achieve energies of the order of 10^{18}eV for parameters characteristic of a young star.

On the novel mechanism of acceleration of cosmic particles

A novel model of particle acceleration in the rotating magnetospheres of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and pulsars is constructed. The particle energies may be boosted up to enormous energies in a several step mechanism. In the first stage, the Langmuir waves are centrifugally excited and amplified by means of a parametric process that efficiently pumps rotational energy to excite electrostatic fields. By considering the pulsars it is shown that the Langmuir waves very soon Landau damp on the relativistic electrons already present in a magnetosphere. It has been found that the process is so efficient that no energy losses might affect the mechanism of particle acceleration. Applying typical parameters for young pulsars we have shown that by means of this process the electrons might achieve energies of the order of $10^{18}$ eV. The situation in AGN magnetospheres is slightly different. In the second stage, the process of "Langmuir collapse" develops, creating appropriate conditions for transferring electric energy to boost up already high proton energies to much higher values. As in the previous case, one can show that various energy losses are relatively weak, and do not impose any significant constraints on maximum achievable proton energies of the order of $10^{21}$ eV.

On the search for artificial Dyson-like structures around pulsars

Assuming the possibility of existence of a supercivilization we extend the idea of Freeman Dyson considering pulsars instead of stars. It is shown that instead of a spherical shell the supercivilization must use ring-like constructions. We have found that a size of the "ring" should be of the order of $(10^{-4}-10^{-1})$AU with temperature interval $(300-600)$K for relatively slowly rotating pulsars and $(10-350)$AU with temperature interval $(300-700)$K for rapidly spinning neutron stars, respectively. Although for the latter the Dyson construction is unrealistically massive and cannot be considered seriously. Analyzing the stresses in terms of the radiation and wind flows it has been argued that they cannot significantly affect the ring construction. On the other hand, the ring in-plane unstable equilibrium can be restored by the energy which is small compared to the energy extracted from the star. This indicates that the search for infrared ring-like sources close to slowly rotating pulsars seems to be quite promising.

Very high energy emission of Crab-like pulsars driven by the Cherenkov drift radiation

In this paper we study the generation of very high energy (VHE) emission in Crab-like pulsars driven by means of the feedback of Cherenkov drift waves on distribution of magnetospheric electrons. We have found that the unstable Cherenkov drift modes lead to the quasi-linear diffusion (QLD), keeping the pitch angles from vanishing, which in turn, maintains the synchrotron mechanism. Considering the Crab-like pulsars it has been shown that the growth rate of the Cherenkov drift instability (ChDI) is quite high, indicating high efficiency of the process. Analyzing the mechanism for the typical parameters we have found that the Cherenkov drift emission from the extreme UV to hard $X$-rays is strongly correlated with the VHE synchrotron emission in the GeV band.

On the role of the curvature drift instability in the dynamics of electrons in active galactic nuclei

We study the influence of the centrifugally driven curvature drift instability (CDI) on the dynamics of relativistic electrons in the magnetospheres of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We generalize our previous work by considering relativistic particles with different initial phases. Considering the Euler, continuity, and induction equations, by taking into account the resonant conditions, we derive the growth rate of the CDI. We show that due to the centrifugal effects, the rotational energy is efficiently pumped directly into the drift modes, that leads to the generation of a toroidal component of the magnetic field. As a result, the magnetic field lines transform into such a configuration when particles do not experience any forces and since the instability is centrifugally driven, at this stage the CDI is suspended.

The generation of connected high and very high energy $γ$-rays and radio emission in active galactic nuclei

We consider relativistic electrons in magnetospheric flows close to a supermassive black hole and study the mechanism of quasi-linear diffusion (QLD) to investigate the correlation between $γ$-ray and radio emission in active galactic nuclei. Moving in the nonuniform magnetic field the particles experience a force that is responsible for the conservation of the adiabatic invariant. This force, together with the radiation reaction force, tends to decrease the pitch angles. Contrary to this, the QLD attempts to increase the pitch angle, and this maintains the synchrotron emission regime. To examine the balance between the QLD and the aforementioned dissipative factors we investigate the quasi-stationary state by applying the kinetic equation. Considering the magnetospheric plasma close to the supermassive black hole, we examined the efficiency of the QLD for different parameters. By examining the cyclotron instability, we show that despite the efficient dissipative factors, the cyclotron modes excite transverse and longitudinal-transversal waves which leads to the QLD. We find that the QLD provides a connection of emission in the $γ$-ray and radio domains. We show that under favourable conditions the radio emission from 22 MHz to 9 GHz on the mpc scale is associated with $γ$-ray emission from 900 GeV down to 9 GeV on the same scale.

The influence of corotation on the high energy synchrotron emission in Crab-like pulsars

For Crab-like pulsars we consider the synchrotron mechanism influenced by relativistic effects of rotation to study the production of the very high energy (VHE) pulsed radiation. The process of quasi-linear diffusion (QLD) is applied to prevent the damping of the synchrotron emission due to extremely strong magnetic field. By examining the kinetic equation governing the QLD, apart from the synchrotron radiative force, we taken into account the the so-called reaction force, that is responsible for corotation and influences plasma processes in the nearby zone of the light cylinder (LC) surface. We have found that the relativistic effects of rotation significantly change efficiency of the quasi-linear diffusion. In particular, examining magnetospheric parameters typical for Crab-like pulsars, it has been shown that unlike the situation, where relativistic effects of rotation are not important, on the LC surface, the relativistic electrons via the synchrotron mechanism may produce photons even in the TeV domain. It is shown that the VHE radiation is strongly correlated with the relatively low frequency emission.

On the simultaneous generation of high energy emission and submillimeter/infrared radiation from active galactic nuclei

For active galactic nuclei (AGNs) we study the role of the mechanism of quasi-linear diffusion (QLD) in producing the high energy emission in the MeV-GeV domains strongly connected with the submillimeter/infrared radiation. Considering the kinetic equation governing the stationary regime of the QLD we investigate the feedback of the diffusion on electrons. We show that this process leads to the distribution of particles by the pitch angles, implying that the synchrotron mechanism is no longer prevented by energy losses. Examining a reasonable interval of physical parameters, we show that it is possible to produce MeV-GeV gamma-rays, strongly correlated with submillimeter/infrared bands.

On the very high energy spectrum of the Crab pulsar

In the present paper we construct a self-consistent theory, interpreting the observations of the MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope of the very high energy (VHE) pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar. In particular, on the basis of the Vlasov's kinetic equation we study the process of the quasi-linear diffusion(QLD) developed by means of the cyclotron instability. This mechanism provides simultaneous generation of low (radio) and VHE (0.01-25GeV) emission on the light cylinder scales, in one location of the pulsar magnetosphere. A different approach of the synchrotron theory is considered, giving the spectral index of VHE emission ($β=2$) and the exponential cutoff energy (23 GeV) in a good agreement with the observational data.

Quasi-linear diffusion driving the synchrotron emission in active galactic nuclei

We study the role of the quasi-linear diffusion (QLD) in producing X-ray emission by means of ultra-relativistic electrons in AGN magnetospheric flows. We examined two regions: (a) an area close to the black hole and (b) the outer magnetosphere. The synchrotron emission has been studied for ultra-relativistic electrons and was shown that the QLD generates the soft and hard X-rays, close to the black hole and on the light cylinder scales respectively. By considering the cyclotron instability, we show that despite the short synchrotron cooling timescales, the cyclotron modes excite transverse and longitudinal-transversal waves. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that the synchrotron reaction force and a force responsible for the conservation of the adiabatic invariant tend to decrease the pitch angles, whereas the diffusion, that pushes back on electrons by means of the aforementioned waves, tends to increase the pitch angles. By examining the quasi-stationary state, we investigate a regime in which these two processes are balanced and a non-vanishing value of pitch angles is created.

Dynamical feedback of the curvature drift instability on its saturation process

We investigate the reconstruction of pulsar magnetospheres close to the light cylinder surface to study the curvature drift instability (CDI) responsible for the twisting of magnetic field lines in the mentioned zone. The influence of plasma dynamics on the saturation process of the CDI is studied. On the basis of the Euler, continuity, and induction equations, we derive the increment of the CDI and analyze parametrically excited drift modes. The dynamics of the reconstruction of the pulsar magnetosphere is studied analytically. We show that there is a possibility of a parametrically excited rotational-energy pumping-process in the drift modes. It is indicated by the generation of a toroidal component of the magnetic field that transforms the field lines into such a configuration, in which plasma particles do not experience any forces. At this stage, the instability process saturates and the further amplification of the toroidal component to the magnetic field lines is suspended.

Is very high energy emission from the BL Lac 1ES 0806+524 centrifugally driven?

We investigate the role of centrifugal acceleration of electrons in producing the very high energy (VHE) radiation from the BL Lac object 1ES 0806+524, recently detected by VERITAS. The efficiency of the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) of the accretion disk thermal photons against rotationally accelerated electrons is examined. By studying the dynamics of centrifugally induced outflows and by taking into account a cooling process due to the ICS, we estimate the maximum attainable Lorentz factors of particles and derive corresponding energetic characteristics of the emission. Examining physically reasonable parameters, by considering the narrow interval of inclination angles (0.7^o-0.95^o) of magnetic field lines with respect to the rotation axis, it is shown that the centrifugally accelerated electrons may lead to the observational pattern of the VHE emission, if the density of electrons is in a certain interval.
