Experimental study of the $e^+e^-\to n\bar n$ process at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\to n\bar n$ is studied in the experiment at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector. The technique of the time measurements in the multichannel NaI(Tl) electromagnetic calorimeter is used to select nnbar events. The value of the measured cross section in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.894 to 2 GeV varies from 0.5 to 0.35 nb. The effective neutron timelike form factor is derived from the measured cross section and compared with the proton form factor. The ratio of the neutron electric and magnetic form factors is obtained from the analysis of the antineutron polar angle distribution and found to be consistent with unity.

MuMuPy: A Dimuonium-Matter Interaction Calculator

In this article, we present MuMuPy, a computational library and cloud-based tool for calculating cross sections for the interaction of dimuonium (true muonium) with matter. MuMuPy calculates corresponding form factors and allows one to find the probabilities of dimuonium transitions in the electric field of the nucleus. MuMuPy was developed in the context of the $μμ$-tron facility, the project of a low-energy electron-positron collider for production and experimental study of dimuonium, proposed in our home institute, Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The reliability of MuMuPy was verified by three independent methods, one of which was developed by the authors earlier.

A shadow of the repulsive Rutherford scattering and Hamilton vector

The fact that repulsive Rutherford scattering casts a paraboloidal shadow is rarely exploited in introductory mechanics textbooks. Another rarely used construction in such textbooks is the Hamilton vector, a cousin of the more famous Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector. We will show how the latter (Hamilton's vector) can be used to explain and clarify the former (paraboloidal shadow).

Asteroid impact, Schumann resonances and the end of dinosaurs

We estimate the expected magnitudes of the Schumann resonance fields immediately after the Chicxulub impact and show that they exceed their present-day values by about $5\times 10^4$ times. Long-term distortion of the Schumann resonance parameters is also expected due to the enviromental impact of the Chicxulub event. If Schumann resonances play a regulatory biological role, as some studies indicate, it is possible that the excitation and distortion of Schumann resonances as a result of the asteroid/comet impact was a possible stress factor, which, among other stress factors associated with the impact, contributed to the demise of dinosaurs.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to K^+ K^- π^0$ cross section with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-π^0$ is studied with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. Basing on data with an integrated luminosity of 26.4~pb$^{-1}$ we measure the $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-π^0$ cross section in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.28 up to 2 GeV. The measured mass spectrum of the $Kπ$ system indicates that the dominant mechanism of this reaction is the transition through the $K^{\ast}(892)K$ intermediate state. The cross section for the $ϕπ^0$ intermediate state is measured separately. The SND results are consistent with previous measurements in the BABAR experiment and have comparable accuracy. We study the effect of the interference between the $ϕπ^0$ and $K^\ast K$ amplitudes. It is found that the interference gives sizable contribution to the measured $e^+e^- \to ϕπ^0\to K^+K^-π^0$ cross section below 1.7 GeV.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \toπ^+π^- $ process cross section with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 collider in the energy region $0.525<\sqrt{s}<0.883$ GeV

The cross section of the process $e^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-$ has been measured in the Spherical Neutral Detector (SND) experiment at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider VEPP-2000 in the energy region $525 <\sqrt[]{s} <883$ MeV. The measurement is based on data with an integrated luminosity of about 4.6 pb$^{-1}$. The systematic uncertainty of the cross section determination is 0.8 % at $\sqrt{s}>0.600$ GeV. The $ρ$ meson parameters are obtained as $m_ρ= 775.3\pm 0.5\pm 0.6$ MeV, $Γ_ρ= 145.6\pm 0.6\pm 0.8$ MeV, $B_{ρ\to e^+ e^-}\times B_{ρ\toπ^+π^-} = (4.89\pm 0.02\pm 0.04)\times 10^{-5}$, and the parameters of the $e^+ e^-\toω\toπ^+π^-$ process, suppressed by $G$-parity, as $B_{ω\to e^+ e^-}\times B_{ω\toπ^+π^-}= (1.32\pm 0.06\pm 0.02)\times 10^{-6} $ and $ϕ_{ρω} = 110.7\pm 1.5\pm1.0$ degrees.

Photon splitting -- twenty years later

In 1995, a team of physicists from the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk was able to observe the splitting of a photon in the Coulomb field of an atomic nucleus for the first time, and reported the preliminary results of this experiment at two conferences. This was an extremely difficult experiment as the probability of the process is very small. It took another seven years to publish the final results. This story has been further developed recently. The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider observed in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions a process related to the photon splitting - light by light scattering. In addition, a team of Italian, Polish and British astrophysicists obtained the first observational evidence of the existence of vacuum birefringence in the magnetic field of an isolated neutron star - another physical phenomenon also related to the photon splitting. These new developments triggered this essay, written several years ago.

Finsler space-time in light of Segal's principle

ISIM(2) symmetry group of Cohen and Glashow's very special relativity is unstable with respect to small deformations of its underlying algebraic structure and according to Segal's principle cannot be a true symmetry of nature. However, like special relativity, which is a very good description of nature thanks to the smallness of the cosmological constant, which characterizes the deformation of the Poincare group, the very special relativity can also be a very good approximation thanks to the smallness of the dimensionless parameter characterizing the deformation of ISIM(2).

The $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-$ cross section is measured in the center-of-mass energy range $1.05-2.00$ GeV at the SND detector. The measurement is based on data with an integrated luminosity of 35 pb$^{-1}$ collected at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$-collider. The cross section for the process $e^+e^- \to ωη$ is measured in the center-of-mass energy range 1.34--2.00 GeV. The analysis is based on data collected with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured $e^+e^- \to ωη$ cross section is the most accurate to date. A significant discrepancy is observed between our data and previous BABAR measurement.

Study of the process $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ in the energy range $\sqrt{s} <2$ GeV with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ is studied in the energy range $1.45-2.00$ GeV using data with an integrated luminosity of 33 pb$^{-1}$ accumulated by the SND detector at the $e^+e^-$ collider VEPP-2000. The $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ cross section is measured for the first time. The cross section has a threshold near 1.75 GeV. Its value is about 2 nb in the energy range $1.8-2.0$ GeV. Study of the reaction $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ with the SND detector at the VEPP-2M collider

The process $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ has been studied in the experiment with the SND detector at the VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider. The $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ cross section has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.60 to 1.38 GeV. The cross section is well described by the vector meson dominance model. From the fit to the cross section data we have determined the branching fractions $B(ρ\toπ^0γ)=(4.20\pm0.52)\times10^{-4}$, $B(ω\toπ^0γ)=(8.88\pm0.18)\%$, $B(ϕ\toπ^0γ)=(1.367\pm0.072)\times10^{-3}$, and the relative phase between the $ρ$ and $ω$ amplitudes $φ_ρ=(-12.7\pm4.5)^\circ$. Our data on the process $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ are the most accurate to date.

arXiv in the classical Russian literature

The creation of arXiv, a highly democratic open access repository of research papers in high-energy physics more than twenty years ago was undoubtedly the most spectacular and landmark event for the high-energy physics community. However, we report a curious observation which indicates that the general cultural significance of this event extends far beyond the boundaries assumed at the beginning.

Expanding space, quasars and St. Augustine's fireworks

An attempt is made to explain time non-dilation allegedly observed in quasar light curves. The explanation is based on the assumption that quasar black holes are, in some sense, foreign for our Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe and do not participate in the Hubble flow. Although at first sight such a weird explanation requires unreasonably fine-tuned Big Bang initial conditions, we find a natural justification for it using the Milne cosmological model as an inspiration.

Gauge invariant formulation of 3$γ$ decay of particle-antiparticle bound states

We construct the gauge invariant three-photon decay amplitude of particle-antiparticle bound states modeled by the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations. Application to the quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) bound states is emphasized. An essential aspect of our formulation is that it applies to any underlying quantum field theoretic model of the $q\bar{q}$ system, and not just to models, like exact QCD, where the quark self-energy $Σ$ couples to the electromagnetic field solely via dressed quark propagators. In this way, applications to effective field theories and other QCD motivated models are envisioned. The three-photon decay amplitude is constructed by attaching currents to all possible places in the Feynman diagrams contributing to the dressed quark propagator. The gauge invariance of our construction is thus a direct consequence of respecting the underlying structure of the quantum field theory determining the dynamics. In the resultant expression for the three-photon decay amplitude, all the basic ingredients consisting of the bound state wave function, the final-state interaction $q\bar{q}$ $t$ matrix, the dressed quark propagator, and dressed quark currents, are determined by a universal Bethe-Salpeter kernel.

Invariance of the Noether charge

Surprisingly, an interesting property of the Noether charge that it is by itself invariant under the corresponding symmetry transformation is never discussed in quantum field theory or classical mechanics textbooks we have checked. This property is also almost never mentioned in articles devoted to Noether's theorem. Nevertheless, to prove this property in the context of Lagrangian formalism is not quite trivial and the proof, outlined in this article, can constitute an useful and interesting exercise for students.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to ηπ^+π^-$ cross section in the center-of-mass energy range 1.22--2.00 GeV with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 collider

In the experiment with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider the cross section for the process $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.22 to 2.00 GeV. Obtained results are in agreement with previous measurements and have better accuracy. The energy dependence of the $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ cross section has been fitted with the vector-meson dominance model. From this fit the product of the branching fractions $B(ρ(1450)\toηπ^+π^-)B(ρ(1450)\to e^+e^-)$ has been extracted and compared with the same products for $ρ(1450)\toωπ^0$ and $ρ(1450)\toπ^+π^-$ decays. The obtained cross section data have been also used to test the conservation of vector current hypothesis.

On a search for the $η\rightarrow e^+ e^-$ decay at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider

A sensitivity of the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider in a search for the rare decay $η\rightarrow e^+ e^-$ has been studied. The inverse reaction $e^+ e^- \rightarrow η$ is proposed for this search. We have analyzed a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 108 nb$^{-1}$ collected with the SND detector in the center-of-mass energy range 520-580 MeV and found no background events for the reaction $e^+ e^- \rightarrow η$ in the decay mode $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$. In the absence of background, a sensitivity to ${\cal B}(η\rightarrow e^+ e^-)$ of $10^{-6}$ can be reached during two weeks of VEPP-2000 operation. Such a sensitivity is better than the current upper limit on ${\cal B}(η\rightarrow e^+ e^-)$ by a factor of 2.3.

Search for the $η^{\prime}\to e^+e^-$ decay with the SND detector

A search for the process $e^+e^- \to η^\prime$ has been performed with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The data were accumulated at the center-of-mass energy of $957.78\pm 0.06$ MeV with an integrated luminosity of about 2.9 pb$^{-1}$. For reconstruction of the $η^\prime$ meson five decay chains have been used: $η^{\prime}\toηπ^+π^-$ followed by the $η$ decays to $γγ$ and $3π^0 $, and $η^{\prime} \to ηπ^0π^0$ followed by the $η$ decays to $π^+π^-π^0$, $γγ$, and $3π^0$. As a result, the upper limit has been set on the $η^\prime$ electronic width: $Γ_{η^{\prime}\to e^+e^-} < 0.0020$ eV at the 90\% confidence level.

Sums of generalized harmonic series for kids from five to fifteen

We examine the remarkable connection, first discovered by Beukers, Kolk and Calabi, between $ζ(2n)$, the value of the Riemann zeta-function at an even positive integer, and the volume of some $2n$-dimensional polytope. It can be shown that this volume is equal to the trace of a compact self-adjoint operator. We provide an explicit expression for the kernel of this operator in terms of Euler polynomials. This explicit expression makes it easy to calculate the volume of the polytope and hence $ζ(2n)$. In the case of odd positive integers, the expression for the kernel enables us to rediscover an integral representation for $ζ(2n+1)$, obtained by a different method by Cvijović and Klinowski. Finally, we indicate that the origin of the miraculous Beukers-Kolk-Calabi change of variables in the multidimensional integral, which is at the heart of this circle of ideas, can be traced to the amoeba associated with the certain Laurent polynomial. The paper is dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Arnold (1937-2010).

Relativistic mass and modern physics

At first sight, arguments for and against the notion of relativistic mass look like a notorious intra-Lilliputian quarrel between Big-Endians (those who broke their eggs at the larger end) and Little-Endians. However, upon closer inspection we discover that the relativistic mass notion is alien to the spirit of modern physics to a much greater extent than it seems. To demonstrate an abyss between the modern approach and archaic notions, in this paper we explore how the concept of mass is introduced in modern physics. This modern approach reveals a deep cohomological origin of mass.

Study of e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV with SND

The cross section for the process e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma has been measured in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV. The experiment has been performed at the e+e- collider VEPP-2000 with the SND detector. The measured e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section above 1.4 GeV is the most accurate to date. Below 1.4 GeV our data are in good agreement with the previous SND and CMD-2 measurements. Data on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section are well described by the VMD model with two excited rho-like states. From the measured cross section we have extracted the gamma^* --> omega pi0 transition form factor. It has been found that the VDM model cannot describe simultaneously our data and data obtained from the omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- decay. We have also tested CVC hypothesis comparing our results on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section with data on the tau- --> omega pi- nu_{tau} decay.

Thin disk of co-rotating dwarfs: a fingerprint of dissipative (mirror) dark matter?

Recent observations indicate that about half of the dwarf satellite galaxies around M31 orbit in a thin plane approximately aligned with the Milky Way. It has been argued that this observation along with several other features can be explained if these dwarf satellite galaxies originated as tidal dwarf galaxies formed during an ancient merger event. However if dark matter is collisionless then tidal dwarf galaxies should be free of dark matter - a condition that is difficult to reconcile with observations indicating that dwarf satellite galaxies are dark matter dominated. We argue that dissipative dark matter candidates, such as mirror dark matter, offer a simple solution to this puzzle.

Breaking the light speed barrier

As it is well known, classical special relativity allows the existence of three different kinds of particles: bradyons, luxons and tachyons. Bradyons have non-zero mass and hence always travel slower than light. Luxons are particles with zero mass, like the photon, and they always travel with invariant velocity. Tachyons are hypothetical superluminal particles that always move faster than light. The existence of bradyons and luxons is firmly established, while the tachyons were never reliably observed. In quantum field theory, the appearance of tachyonic degrees of freedom indicates vacuum instability rather than a real existence of the faster-than-light particles. However, recent controversial claims of the OPERA experiment about superluminal neutrinos triggered a renewed interest in superluminal particles. Driven by a striking analogy of the old Frenkel-Kontorova model of a dislocation dynamics to the theory of relativity, we conjecture in this note a remarkable possibility of existence of the fourth type of particles, elvisebrions, which can be superluminal. The characteristic feature of elvisebrions, distinguishing them from tachyons, is that they are outside the realm of special relativity and their energy remains finite (or may even turn to zero) when the elvisebrion velocity approaches the light velocity.

Comment on the sums $S(n)=\sum\limits_{k=-\infty}^\infty \frac{1}{(4k+1)^n}$

When physics helps mathematics: calculation of the sophisticated multiple integral

There exists a remarkable connection between the quantum mechanical Landau-Zener problem and purely classical-mechanical problem of a ball rolling on a Cornu spiral. This correspondence allows us to calculate a complicated multiple integral, a kind of multi-dimensional generalization of Fresnel integrals. A direct method of calculation is also considered but found to be successful only in some low-dimensional cases. As a byproduct of this direct method, an interesting new integral representation for $ζ(2)$ is obtained.

Citation entropy and research impact estimation

A new indicator, a real valued $s$-index, is suggested to characterize a quality and impact of the scientific research output. It is expected to be at least as useful as the notorious $h$-index, at the same time avoiding some its obvious drawbacks. However, surprisingly, the $h$-index is found to be quite a good indicator for majority of real-life citation data with their alleged Zipfian behaviour for which these drawbacks do not show up. The style of the paper was chosen deliberately somewhat frivolous to indicate that any attempt to characterize the scientific output of a researcher by just one number always has an element of a grotesque game in it and should not be taken too seriously. I hope this frivolous style will be perceived as a funny decoration only.

Problems in mechanics of particles and bodies

The textbook contains the problems in mechanics and special relativity for physics departments of universities. Many original problems were proposed by active scientists from the institutes of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science, while teaching at the Novosibirsk State University. The problems have been used in seminars, students' homework and in the written examinations at Novosibirsk State University. They are arranged according to the program of the introductory mechanics course, adopted at Novosibirsk State University. This part contains only problems. Answers and solutions of some problems can be also provided in a separate submission in future, if there would be enough interest in them. Previous versions of the textbook were published several times in the past. This submission is based only on the author's original materials and does not use any copyrighted files from the publishers.

Elementary derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession

An elementary pedagogical derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession is given based on the use of Hamilton vector. The Hamilton vector is an extra constant of motion of the Kepler/Coulomb problem related simply to the more popular Runge-Lenz vector. When a velocity-dependent Lorentz-like gravitomagnetic force is present, the Hamilton vector, as well as the canonical orbital momentum are no longer conserved and begin to precess. It is easy to calculate their precession rates, which are related to the Lense-Thirring precession of the orbit.

Mirror dark matter discovered?

Recent astrophysical data indicates that dark matter shows a controversial behaviour in galaxy cluster collisions. In case of the notorious Bullet cluster, dark matter component of the cluster behaves like a collisionless system. However, its behaviour in the Abell 520 cluster indicates a significant self-interaction cross-section. It is hard for the WIMP based dark matter models to reconcile such a diverse behaviour. Mirror dark matter models, on the contrary, are more flexible and for them diverse behaviour of the dark matter is a natural expectation.

Zeno meets modern science

``No one has ever touched Zeno without refuting him''. We will not refute Zeno in this paper. Instead we review some unexpected encounters of Zeno with modern science. The paper begins with a brief biography of Zeno of Elea followed by his famous paradoxes of motion. Reflections on continuity of space and time lead us to Banach and Tarski and to their celebrated paradox, which is in fact not a paradox at all but a strict mathematical theorem, although very counterintuitive. Quantum mechanics brings another flavour in Zeno paradoxes. Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are really paradoxical but now experimental facts. Then we discuss supertasks and bifurcated supertasks. The concept of localization leads us to Newton and Wigner and to interesting phenomenon of quantum revivals. At last we note that the paradoxical idea of timeless universe, defended by Zeno and Parmenides at ancient times, is still alive in quantum gravity. The list of references that follows is necessarily incomplete but we hope it will assist interested reader to fill in details.

Experimental study of the e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0 reaction by SND detector in the energy range sqrt{s}=0.42--1.38 GeV

The review of the SND results of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0$ process study in the energy range $\sqrt[]{s}=0.42$ -- 1.38 GeV at VEPP-2M collider, based on about $2\times 10^6$ selected events, is presented. The total cross section, parameters of the $ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$ resonances, and $ω^\prime$, $ω^{\prime\prime}$ states were obtained. It was found that $ρπ$ and $ωπ^0$ intermediate states describe the reaction dynamics. The experimental data cannot be described by a sum of only $ω$, $ϕ$, $ω^\prime$ and $ω^{\prime\prime}$ resonances contributions. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of the $ρ\to 3π$ decay, suppressed by $G$-parity, with relative probability $B(ρ\to 3π) = (1.01\pm^{0.54}_{0.36}\pm 0.034) \times 10^{-4}$.

Study of the $ππ$ mass spectra in the process $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-π^0$ at $\sqrt[]{s} \simeq 1020$ MeV

The invariant mass spectra of the $π^+π^-$ and $π^\pmπ^0$ pairs in the process $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-π^0$ were studied in the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s} \simeq 1020$ MeV. These studies were based on about $0.5 \times 10^6$ experimental events. The spectra were analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. It was found that the experimental data can be described with $e^+e^- \to ρπ\to π^+π^-π^0$ transition only. Upper limit on the branching ratio of the $ϕ(1020)\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay through intermediate states different from $ρπ$ was obtained at the 90 % confidence level: $B(ϕ\toπ^+π^-π^0)<6 \cdot 10^{-4}$. The $ρ$-meson mass and width which follow from the spectra analysis are $m_ρ=775.0\pm 1.3$ MeV, $Γ_ρ=150.4 \pm 3.0$ MeV. Neutral and charged $ρ$-mesons mass difference was found to equal $m_{ρ^\pm}-m_{ρ^0}=-1.3\pm2.3$ MeV. In the $π^+π^-$ mass spectrum the $ρ-ω$ interference was seen at two standard deviations level.

First Physical Results from SND Detector at VEPP-2M

The paper describes experiments with the SND detector at VEPP-2M collider, carried out during the period from October 1995 until June 1997. The total integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb^{-1} was collected in the energy range 2E=0.4-1.4 GeV (MHAD97 experiment), corresponding to 4*10^5 mu^+ mu^- pairs produced. Preliminary results of the 1996 phi-meson experiment (FI96) are presented. The total number of phi-mesons produced is 4*10^6. New data on rare decays of phi and eta (550) mesons, in particular B(phi -> eta gamma) = (1.30+-0.06+-0.07)%, B(phi -> pi^0 pi^0 gamma) = (1.1+-0.2)*10^{-4}, (M_{pi^0 pi^0} > 800 MeV), B(phi -> f^0 gamma) = (4.7+-1.0)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta pi^0 gamma) = (1.3+-0.5)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta' gamma) < 1.7*10^{-4}, B(phi -> 2 pi^0 ) < 6*10^{-4} were obtained.

Do Maxicharged particles exist?

The critical charge $Z_c$ is estimated for elementary particles using a Newton-Wigner position operator inspired model. Particles with $Z \sim Z_c$ (maxicharged particles), if they exist at all, can have unusual properties which turn them into elusive objects not easy to detect. Dirac's magnetic poles have a (magnetic) charge $g\gg Z_c$. This gives one more argument that it is unexpected that pointlike monopoles to be found in our world, where $ α^{-1}\simeq 137$.
