Unconventional hysteretic transition in a charge density wave

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

SN 2018hti: a nearby superluminous supernova discovered in a metal-poor galaxy

SN 2018hti is a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN~I) with an absolute $g$-band magnitude of $-22.2$ at maximum brightness, discovered in a metal-poor galaxy at a redshift of 0.0612. We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of this supernova, covering the phases from $\sim -35$ days to more than +340 days from the $r$-band maximum. Combining our $BVgri$-band photometry with {\it Swift} UVOT optical/ultraviolet photometry, we calculated the peak luminosity as $\sim 3.5\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Modeling the observed light curve reveals that the luminosity evolution of SN 2018hti can be produced by an ejecta mass of 5.8 $M_\odot$ and a magnetar with a magnetic field of $B=1.8\times10^{13}$~G having an initial spin period of $P_0=1.8$ ms. Based on such a magnetar-powered scenario and a larger sample, a correlation between the spin of the magnetar and the kinetic energy of the ejecta can be inferred for most SLSNe~I, suggesting a self-consistent scenario. Like for other SLSNe~I, the host galaxy of SN 2018hti is found to be relatively faint ($M_{g} = -17.75$ mag) and of low metallicity ($Z=0.3~Z_\odot$), with a star-formation rate of 0.3 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. According to simulation results of single-star evolution, SN 2018hti could originate from a massive, metal-poor star with a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) mass of 25--40 $M_\odot$, or from a less massive rotating star with $M_\mathrm{ZAMS} \approx 16$--25 $M_\odot$. For the case of a binary system, its progenitor could also be a star with $M_\mathrm{ZAMS} \gtrsim 25$ $M_\odot$.

Effect of symmetry mismatch on the domain structure of rhombohedral BiFeO3 thin films

Considerable work has focused on the use of epitaxial strain to engineer domain structures in ferroic materials. Here, we revisit the observed reduction of domain variants in rhombohedral BiFeO3 films on rare-earth scandate substrates. Prior work has attributed the reduction of domain variants to anisotropic in-plane strain, but our findings suggest that the monoclinic distortion of the substrate, resulting from oxygen octahedral rotation, is the driving force for variant selection. We study epitaxial BiFeO3 DyScO3 (110)o heterostructures with and without ultrathin, cubic SrTiO3 buffer layers as a means to isolate the effect of symmetry mismatch on the domain formation. Two variant stripe domains are observed in films grown directly on DyScO3, while four-variant domains are observed in films grown on SrTiO3 buffered DyScO3 when the buffer layer is >2 nm thick. This work provides insights into the role of the substrate beyond just lattice mismatch in manipulating and controlling domain structure evolution in materials.

Controlling Entanglement Dynamics by Choosing Appropriate Ratio between Cavity-Fiber Coupling and Atom-Cavity Coupling

The entanglement characteristics including the so-called sudden death effect between two identical two-level atoms trapped in two separate cavities connected by an optical fiber are studied. The results show that the time evolution of entanglement is sensitive not only to the degree of entanglement of the initial state but also to the ratio between cavity-fiber coupling () and atom-cavity coupling (). This means that the entanglement dynamics can be controlled by choosing specific v and g.

Study of charge dynamics in transparent single-walled carbon nanotube films

We report the transmission over a wide frequency range (far infrared - visible) of pristine and hole-doped, free-standing carbon nanotube films at temperatures between 50 K and 300 K. Optical constants are estimated by Kramers-Kronig analysis of transmittance. We see evidence in the far infrared for a gap below 10 meV. Hole doping causes a shift of spectral weight from the first interband transition into the far infrared. Temperature dependence in both the doped and undoped samples is restricted to the far-infrared region.
