$SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_R$ models with modular $A_4$ symmetry

We study $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_R$ models with modular $A_4$ symmetry that provide unified description of the quark and lepton sector including the flavor structures. The models are distinguished by the assignments of the modular weight on matter superfields. We carry out numerical $χ^2$ analysis and search for parameter sets that accomodate the experimental results. We provide a benchmark point for each model to illustrate implications of our models.

The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

The Phonon Background from Gamma Rays in Sub-GeV Dark Matter Detectors

High-energy photons with $\mathcal{O}$(MeV) energies from radioactive contaminants can scatter in a solid-state target material and constitute an important low-energy background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection searches. This background is most noticeable for energy deposits in the $1 - 100$ meV range due to the partially coherent scattering enhancement in the forward scattering direction. We comprehensively quantify the resulting single- and multi-phonon background in Si, Ge, GaAs, SiC, and Al$_2$O$_3$ target materials, which are representative of target materials of interest in low-mass dark matter searches. We use a realistic representation of the high-energy photon background, and contrast the expected background phonon spectrum with the expected dark matter signal phonon spectrum. An active veto is needed to suppress this background sufficiently in order to allow for the detection of a dark matter signal, even in well-shielded environments. For comparison we also show the expected single- and multi-phonon event rates from coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering due to solar neutrinos, and find that they are sub-dominant to the photon-induced phonon background.

Upper bound on the smuon mass from vacuum stability in the light of muon $g-2$ anomaly

We derive an upper bound on the smuon mass assuming that the muon $g-2$ anomaly is explained by the supersymmetric (SUSY) contribution. In the minimal SUSY standard model, the SUSY contribution to the muon $g-2$ is enhanced when the Higgsino mass parameter is large. Then, the smuon-smuon-Higgs trilinear coupling is enhanced, which may destabilize the electroweak vacuum. We calculate precisely the decay rate of the electroweak vacuum in such a case. We include one-loop effects which are crucial to determine the overall normalization of the decay rate. Requiring that the theoretical prediction of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is consistent with the observed value at the $1$ and $2σ$ levels (equal to the central value of the observed value), we found that the lightest smuon mass should be smaller than $1.38$ and $1.68\ {\rm TeV}$ ($1.20\ {\rm TeV}$) for $\tanβ=10$ (with $\tanβ$ being the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs bosons), respectively, and the bound is insensitive to the value of $\tanβ$.

Detection capability of Migdal effect for argon and xenon nuclei with position sensitive gaseous detectors

Migdal effect is attracting interests because of the potential to enhance the sensitivities of direct dark matter searches to the low mass region. In spite of its great importance, the Migdal effect has not been experimentally observed yet. A realistic experimental approach towards the first observation of the Migdal effect in the neutron scattering was studied with Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, potential background rate was studied together with the event rate of the Migdal effect by a neutron source. It was found that a table-top sized $\sim (30\rm cm )^3$ position-sensitive gaseous detector filled with argon or xenon target gas can detect characteristic signatures of the Migdal effect with sufficient rates (O($10^2\sim10^3$) events/day). A simulation result of a simple experimental set-up showed two significant background sources, namely the intrinsic neutrons and the neutron induced gamma-rays. These background rates were found to be much higher than those of the Migdal effect in the neutron scattering. As a consequence of this study, it is concluded that the experimental observation of the Migdal effect in the neutron scattering can be realized with a good understanding and reduction of the background.

High Scale Validity of the DFSZ Axion Model with Precision

With the assumption of classical scale invariance at the Planck scale, the DFSZ axion model can generate the Higgs mass terms of the appropriate size through technically natural parameters and may be valid up to the Planck scale. We discuss the high scale validity of the Higgs sector, namely the absence of Landau poles and the vacuum stability. The Higgs sector is identical to that of the type-II two Higgs doublet model with a limited number of the Higgs quartic couplings. We utilize the state-of-the-art method to calculate vacuum decay rates and find that they are enhanced at most by 10^10 compared with the tree level evaluation. We also discuss the constraints from flavor observables, perturbative unitarity, oblique parameters and collider searches. We find that the high scale validity tightly constrains the parameter region, but there is still a chance to observe at most about 10% deviation of the $125~{\rm GeV}$ Higgs couplings to the fermions.

Maximum value of the spin-independent cross section in the THDM+a

We investigate the maximum value of the spin-independent cross section ($σ_\text{SI}$) in a dark matter (DM) model called the two-Higgs doublet model + a (THDM+a). This model can explain the measured value of the DM energy density by the freeze-out mechanism. Also, $σ_\text{SI}$ is suppressed by the momentum transfer at the tree level, and loop diagrams give the leading contribution to it. The model prediction of $σ_\text{SI}$ highly depends on values of $c_1$ and $c_2$ that are the quartic couplings between the gauge singlet CP-odd state ($a_0$) and Higgs doublet fields ($H_1$ and $H_2$), $c_1 a_0^2 H_1^\dagger H_1$ and $c_2 a_0^2 H_2^\dagger H_2$. We discuss the upper and lower bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$ by studying the stability of the electroweak vacuum, the condition for the potential bounded from the below, and the perturbative unitarity. We find that the condition for the stability of the electroweak vacuum gives upper bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$. The condition for the potential to be bounded from below gives lower bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$. It also constrains the mixing angle between the two CP-odd states. The perturbative unitarity bound gives the upper bound on the Yukawa coupling between the dark matter and $a_0$ and the quartic coupling of $a_0$. Under these theoretical constraints, we find that the maximum value of the $σ_\text{SI}$ is $\sim 5\times 10^{-47}$ cm$^2$ for $m_A = $ 600 GeV, and the LZ and XENONnT experiments can see the DM signal predicted in this model near future.

To be, or not to be finite? The Higgs potential in Gauge-Higgs Unification

In this paper, we investigate the finiteness of the Higgs effective potential in an ${\rm SU}(\mathcal N)$ Gauge-Higgs Unification (GHU) model defined on ${\bf M}^4\times S^1$. We obtain the Higgs effective potential at the two-loop level and find that it is finite. We also discuss that the Higgs effective potential is generically divergent for three- or higher-loop levels. As an example, we consider an ${\rm SU}(\mathcal N)$ gauge theory on ${\bf M}^5\times S^1$, where the one-loop corrections to the four-Fermi operators are divergent. We find that the Higgs effective potential depends on their counter terms at the three-loop level.

Fast-Rolling Relaxion

We discuss new mechanisms to stop the relaxion field during inflation. They can be realized in a generic model, including the original model but in a quite different parameter region. We consider a fast-rolling relaxion field, which can go over the bumps created by QCD-like dynamics. Then, in one of the mechanisms, we stop it with a parametric resonance of the Higgs field. The mechanisms are free from a super-Planckian field excursion or a gigantic number of e-folds of inflation. The relaxion has a mass around the weak scale and mixes with the Higgs boson, which enhances the testability of our mechanisms.

Renormalization-Scale Uncertainty in the Decay Rate of False Vacuum

We study radiative corrections to the decay rate of false vacua, paying particular attention to the renormalization-scale dependence of the decay rate. The decay rate exponentially depends on the bounce action. The bounce action itself is renormalization scale dependent. To make the decay rate scale-independent, radiative corrections, which are due to the field fluctuations around the bounce, have to be included. We show quantitatively that the inclusion of the fluctuations suppresses the scale dependence, and hence is important for the precise calculation of the decay rate. We also apply our analysis to a supersymmetric model and show that the radiative corrections are important for the Higgs-stau system with charge breaking minima.

Higgs Mixing in the NMSSM and Light Higgsinos

We explore the effects of Higgs mixing in the general next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). Extended to include a gauge singlet, the Higgs sector can naturally explain the observed Higgs boson mass in TeV scale supersymmetry without invoking large stop mixing. This is particularly the case when the singlet scalar is light so that singlet-doublet mixing increases the mass of the SM-like Higgs boson. In such a case the Higgs mixing has interesting implications following from the fact that the higgsino mass parameter and the singlet coupling to Higgs bilinear crucially depend on the Higgs boson masses and mixing angles. For the mixing compatible with the current LHC data on the Higgs signal rates, the higgsinos are required to be relatively light, around or below a few hundred GeV, as long as the heavy doublet Higgs boson has a mass smaller than about 250\sqrt{\tanβ} GeV and the singlet-like Higgs boson is consistent with the LEP constraint. In addition, the Higgs coupling to photons can receive a sizable contribution of either sign from the charged-higgsino loops combined with singlet-doublet mixing.

Peccei-Quinn invariant extension of the NMSSM

We study a Peccei-Quinn invariant extension of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM), which turns out to be free from the tadpole and domain wall problems. Having a non-renormalizable coupling to the axion superfield, the SM singlet added to the Higgs sector can naturally generate an effective Higgs mu term around the weak scale. In the model, the lightest neutralino is dominated by the singlino, which gets a mass only through mixing with the neutral Higgsinos. We explore the phenomenological consequences resulting from the existence of such a relatively light neutralino. The coupling of the SM singlet to the Higgs doublets is constrained by the experimental bound on the invisible Z-boson decay width. Under this constraint, we examine the properties of the SM-like Higgs boson paying attention to its mass and decays. We also demonstrate a UV completion of the model in SU(5) grand unified theory with a missing-partner mechanism.

Singlet-doublet Higgs mixing and its implications on the Higgs mass in the PQ-NMSSM

We examine the implications of singlet-doublet Higgs mixing on the properties of a Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson within the Peccei-Quinn invariant extension of the NMSSM (PQ-NMSSM). The SM singlet added to the Higgs sector connects the PQ and visible sectors through a PQ-invariant non-renormalizable Kähler potential term, making the model free from the tadpole and domain-wall problems. For the case that the lightest Higgs boson is dominated by the singlet scalar, the Higgs mixing increases the mass of a SM-like Higgs boson while reducing its signal rate at collider experiments compared to the SM case. The Higgs mixing is important also in the region of parameter space where the NMSSM contribution to the Higgs mass is small, but its size is limited by the experimental constraints on the singlet-like Higgs boson and on the lightest neutralino constituted mainly by the singlino whose Majorana mass term is forbidden by the PQ symmetry. Nonetheless the Higgs mixing can increase the SM-like Higgs boson mass by a few GeV or more even when the Higgs signal rate is close to the SM prediction, and thus may be crucial for achieving a 125 GeV Higgs mass, as hinted by the recent ATLAS and CMS data. Such an effect can reduce the role of stop mixing.
