Jacobian Calabi-Yau 3-fold and charge completeness in six-dimensional theory

We study aspects of an equivalent relation of the charge completeness in six-dimensional (6D) $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theory and a standard assumption on the global structure of the gauge group involving F-theory geometry, recently proved by Morrison and Taylor. We constructed and analyzed a novel 6D supergravity theory, realized as F-theory, on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Our construction yields a novel 6D theory with Mordell-Weil torsion $\mathbb{Z}_4\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4$. Furthermore, we deduce the gauge group and matter fields arising in the 6D F-theory model on the constructed elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We also discuss the relations of the 6D F-theory model constructed in this study to stable degeneration and the dual heterotic string.

Path integrals in JT gravity and Virasoro constraints

We examine the large-$g$ asymptotic Weil-Petersson volume formulas deduced in the previous literature. The volume formulas have application to computing the partition functions and the correlation functions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We utilize two approaches to assess the validity of the formulas. The first approach is to examine the asymptotic volume formulas from the perspective of the Witten conjecture. If the volume formulas are correct, the generating function of the intersection indices deduced from the asymptotic volume formulas would satisfy constraints that are analogous to the Virasoro constraints. We confirmed that the intersection indices computed from the large-$g$ asymptotic volume formulas satisfy variants of the string and dilaton equations. This implies that the generating function of the intersection indices deduced from the asymptotic volume formulas indeed satisfies constraints analogous to first two of the Virasoro constraints. As another approach, we also examined the asymptotic volume formulas by studying the behavior of the higher-order spectral form factors. Our analyses suggest that the large-$g$ asymptotic Weil-Petersson volume formulas yield plausible estimations.

$\frac{1}{2}$ Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Calabi-Yau 3-folds as double covers, and F-theory with U(1)s

In this study, we introduce a new class of rational elliptic 3-folds, which we refer to as "1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds". We construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds by utilizing these rational elliptic 3-folds. The construction yields a novel approach to build elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds of various Mordell-Weil ranks. Our construction of Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be considered as a three-dimensional generalization of the operation of gluing pairs of 1/2 K3 surfaces to yield elliptic K3 surfaces. From one to seven $U(1)$s form in six-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory on the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Seven tensor multiplets arise in these models.

$\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds and four-dimensional F-theory on Calabi-Yau 4-folds with U(1) factors

In this study, four-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory models with multiple U(1) gauge group factors are constructed. A class of rational elliptic 4-folds, which we call as "$\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds," is introduced, and we construct the elliptically fibered 4-folds by utilizing them. This yields a novel approach for building families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds with positive Mordell-Weil ranks. The introduced $\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds possess the characteristic property wherein the sum of the ranks of the singularity type and the Mordell-Weil group is always equal to six. This interesting property enables us to construct the elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds of various positive Mordell-Weil ranks. From one to six U(1) factors form in four-dimensional F-theory on the resulting Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We also propose the geometric condition on the base 3-fold of the built Calabi-Yau 4-folds that allows four-dimensional F-theory models that have heterotic duals to be distinguished from those that do not.

A note on transition in discrete gauge groups in F-theory

We observe a new puzzling physical phenomenon in F-theory on the multisection geometry, wherein a model without a gauge group transitions to another model with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_n$ gauge group via Higgsing. This phenomenon may suggest an unknown aspect of F-theory compactification on multisection geometry lacking a global section. A possible interpretation of this puzzling physical phenomenon is proposed in this note. We also propose a possible interpretation of another unnatural physical phenomenon observed for F-theory on four-section geometry, wherein a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group transitions to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ gauge group via Higgsing as described in the previous literature.

Singularities of 1/2 Calabi-Yau 4-folds and classification scheme for gauge groups in four-dimensional F-theory

In a previous study, we constructed a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds possessing a geometric structure that allowed them to be split into a pair of rational elliptic 4-folds. In the present study, we introduce a method of classifying the singularity types of this class of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds. In brief, we propose a method to classify the non-Abelian gauge groups formed in four-dimensional (4D) $N=1$ F-theory for this class of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds. To demonstrate our method, we explicitly construct several elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds belonging to this class and study the 4D F-theory thereupon. These constructions include a 4D model with two U(1) factors.

Types of gauge groups in six-dimensional F-theory on double covers of rational elliptic 3-folds

In this study, we analyze gauge groups in six-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory models. We construct elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds possessing various singularity types as double covers of "1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds", a class of rational elliptic 3-folds, by applying the method discussed in a previous study to classify the singularity types of the 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds. One to three U(1) factors are formed in six-dimensional F-theory on the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The singularity types of the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds corresponding to the non-Abelian gauge group factors in six-dimensional F-theory are deduced. The singularity types of the Calabi-Yau 3-folds constructed in this work consist of $A$- and $D$-type singularities.

F-theory models with $U(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2,\, \mathbb{Z}_4$ and transitions in discrete gauge groups

We examine the proposal in the previous paper to resolve the puzzle in transitions in discrete gauge groups. We focus on a four-section geometry to test the proposal. We observed that a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group enlarges and $U(1)$ also forms in F-theory along any bisection geometries locus in the four-section geometry built as the complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ fibered over any base. Furthermore, we demonstrate that giving vacuum expectation values to hypermultiplets breaks the enlarged $U(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group down to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ gauge group via Higgsing. We thus confirmed that the proposal in the previous paper is consistent when a four-section splits into a pair of bisections in the four-section geometry. This analysis may be useful for understanding the Higgsing processes occurring in the transitions in discrete gauge groups in six-dimensional F-theory models. We also discuss the construction of a family of six-dimensional F-theory models in which $U(1)\times\mathbb{Z}_4$ forms.

Unbroken $E_7\times E_7$ nongeometric heterotic strings, stable degenerations and enhanced gauge groups in F-theory duals

Eight-dimensional non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_8\mathfrak{e}_7$ were constructed by Malmendier and Morrison as heterotic duals of F-theory on K3 surfaces with $Λ^{1,1}\oplus E_8\oplus E_7$ lattice polarization. Clingher, Malmendier and Shaska extended these constructions to eight-dimensional non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$ as heterotic duals of F-theory on $Λ^{1,1}\oplus E_7\oplus E_7$ lattice polarized K3 surfaces. In this study, we analyze the points in the moduli of non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$, at which the non-Abelian gauge groups on the F-theory side are maximally enhanced. The gauge groups on the heterotic side do not allow for the perturbative interpretation at these points. We show that these theories can be described as deformations of the stable degenerations, as a result of coincident 7-branes on the F-theory side. From the heterotic viewpoint, this effect corresponds to the insertion of 5-branes. These effects can be used to understand nonperturbative aspects of nongeometric heterotic strings. Additionally, we build a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds by fibering elliptic K3 surfaces, which belong to the F-theory side of the moduli of non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$, over $\mathbb{P}^1$. We find that highly enhanced gauge symmetries arise on F-theory on the built elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

$SU(n) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ in F-theory on K3 surfaces without section as double covers of Halphen surfaces

We investigate F-theory models with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry and $SU(n)$ gauge symmetries. We utilize a class of rational elliptic surfaces lacking a global section, known as Halphen surfaces of index 2, to yield genus-one fibered K3 surfaces with a bisection, but lacking a global section. We consider F-theory compactifications on these K3 surfaces times a K3 surface to build such models. We construct Halphen surfaces of index 2 with type $I_n$ fibers, and we take double covers of these surfaces to obtain K3 surfaces without a section with two type $I_n$ fibers, and K3 surfaces without a section with a type $I_{2n}$ fiber. We study these models to advance the understanding of gauge groups that form in F-theory compactifications on the moduli of bisection geometries. Our results also show that the Halphen surfaces of index 2 can have type $I_n$ fibers up to $I_9$. We construct an example of such a surface and determine the complex structure of the Jacobian of this surface. This allows us to precisely determine the non-Abelian gauge groups that arise in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered K3 surfaces obtained as double covers of this Halphen surface of index 2, with a type $I_9$ fiber times a K3 surface. We also determine the $U(1)$ gauge symmetries for compactifications when K3 surfaces as double covers of Halphen surfaces with type $I_9$ fiber are ramified over a smooth fiber.

Gauge Groups and Matter Fields on Some Models of F-theory without Section

We investigate F-theory on an elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-fold without a section to the fibration. To construct an elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-fold without a section, we introduce families of elliptic K3 surfaces which do not admit a section. A product K3 $\times$ K3, with one of the K3's chosen from these families of elliptic K3 surfaces without a section, realises an elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-fold without a section. We then compactify F-theory on such K3 $\times$ K3's. We determine the gauge groups and matter fields which arise on 7-branes for these models of F-theory compactifications without a section. Since each K3 $\times$ K3 constructed does not have a section, gauge groups arising on 7-branes for F-theory models on constructed K3 $\times$ K3's do not have $U(1)$-part. Interestingly, exceptional gauge group $E_6$ appears for some cases.

Negative anomalous dimensions in N=4 SYM

We elucidate aspects of the one-loop anomalous dimension of $so(6)$-singlet multi-trace operators in $\mathcal{N}=4\ SU(N_c)$ SYM at finite $N_c$. First, we study how $1/N_c$ corrections lift the large $N_c$ degeneracy of the spectrum, which we call the operator submixing problem. We observe that all large $N_c$ zero modes acquire non-positive anomalous dimension starting at order $1/N_c^2$, and they mix only among the operators with the same number of traces at leading order. Second, we study the lowest one-loop dimension of operators of length equal to $2N_c$. The dimension of such operators becomes more negative as $N_c$ increases, which will eventually diverge in a double scaling limit. Third, we examine the structure of level-crossing at finite $N_c$ in view of unitarity. Finally we find out a correspondence between the large $N_c$ zero modes and completely symmetric polynomials of Mandelstam variables.

Multi-matrix models and Noncommutative Frobenius algebras obtained from symmetric groups and Brauer algebras

It has been understood that correlation functions of multi-trace operators in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM can be neatly computed using the group algebra of symmetric groups or walled Brauer algebras. On the other hand such algebras have been known to construct 2D topological field theories (TFTs). After reviewing the construction of 2D TFTs based on symmetric groups, we construct 2D TFTs based on walled Brauer algebras. In the construction, the introduction of a dual basis manifests a similarity between the two theories. We next construct a class of 2D field theories whose physical operators have the same symmetry as multi-trace operators constructed from some matrices. Such field theories correspond to non-commutative Frobenius algebras. A matrix structure arises as a consequence of the noncommutativity. Correlation functions of the Gaussian complex multi-matrix models can be translated into correlation functions of the two-dimensional field theories.

The Noether-Lefschetz Problem and Gauge-Group-Resolved Landscapes: F-Theory on K3 x K3 as a Test Case

Four-form flux in F-theory compactifications not only stabilizes moduli, but gives rise to ensembles of string vacua, providing a scientific basis for a stringy notion of naturalness. Of particular interest in this context is the ability to keep track of algebraic information (such as the gauge group) associated with individual vacua while dealing with statistics. In the present work, we aim to clarify conceptual issues and sharpen methods for this purpose, using compactification on ${\rm K3} \times {\rm K3}$ as a test case. Our first approach exploits the connection between the stabilization of complex structure moduli and the Noether-Lefschetz problem. Compactification data for F-theory, however, involve not only a four-fold (with a given complex structure) $Y_4$ and a flux on it, but also an elliptic fibration morphism $Y_4 \longrightarrow B_3$, which makes this problem complicated. The heterotic-F-theory duality indicates that elliptic fibration morphisms should be identified modulo isomorphism. Based on this principle, we explain how to count F-theory vacua on ${\rm K3} \times {\rm K3}$ while keeping the gauge group information. Mathematical results reviewed/developed in our companion paper are exploited heavily. With applications to more general four-folds in mind, we also clarify how to use Ashok-Denef-Douglas' theory of the distribution of flux vacua in order to deal with statistics of sub-ensembles tagged by a given set of algebraic/topological information. As a side remark, we extend the heterotic/F-theory duality dictionary on flux quanta and elaborate on its connection to the semistable degeneration of a K3 surface.

Non-planar operator mixing by Brauer representations

We study the action of the dilatation operator on the basis of local operators constructed from the elements of the walled Brauer algebra, with non-planar corrections fully taken into account. We will see that the operator mixing can be neatly expressed in terms of the irreducible representations of the algebra. In particular we focus on a role of the integer that determines the number of boxes in the representations.

On the Classification of Elliptic Fibrations modulo Isomorphism on K3 Surfaces with large Picard Number

Motivated by a problem originating in string theory, we study elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces with large Picard number modulo isomorphism. We give methods to determine upper bounds for the number of inequivalent K3 surfaces sharing the same frame lattice. For any given Neron--Severi lattice $S_X$, such a bound on the `multiplicity' can be derived by investigating the quotient of the isometry group of $S_X$ by the automorphism group. The resulting bounds are strongest for large Picard numbers and multiplicities of unity do indeed occur for a number of K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Under a few extra conditions, a more refined analysis is also possible by explicitly studying the embedding of $S_X$ into the even unimodular lattice ${\rm II}_{1,25}$ and exploiting the detailed structure of the isometry groups of $S_X$ and ${\rm II}_{1,25}$. We illustrate these methods in examples and derive bounds for the number of elliptic fibrations on Kummer surfaces of Picard numbers 17 and 20. As an intermediate step, we also discuss coarser classification schemes and review known results.

Correlation functions and representation bases in free N=4 Super Yang-Mills

We study exact correlation functions of N=4 SYM at zero coupling. It has been known that it is convenient to label local gauge invariant operators by irreducible representations of symmetric groups/Brauer algebras. We first review the construction of representation bases from the viewpoint of the enhanced symmetry structure of the free theory. We present a basis of multi-matrix models using elements of Brauer algebras, generalising our previous construction for two matrices. We will compute multi-point functions of the basis with the exact N-dependence. In particular we study three-point functions of a class of BPS operators, and we find that they are given by a branching rule of the Brauer algebra. The three-point functions take a factorised form if representations on the operators satisfy a relation.

Non-holomorphic multi-matrix gauge invariant operators based on Brauer algebra

We present an orthogonal basis of gauge invariant operators constructed from some complex matrices for the free matrix field, where operators are expressed with the help of Brauer algebra. This is a generalisation of our previous work for a signle complex matrix. We also discuss the matrix quantum mechanics relevant to N=4 SYM on S^{3} times R. A commuting set of conserved operators whose eigenstates are given by the orthogonal basis is shown by using enhanced symmetries at zero coupling.

On Higher Dimensional Fuzzy Spherical Branes

Matrix descriptions of higher dimensional spherical branes are investigated. It is known that a fuzzy 2k-sphere is described by the coset space SO(2k+1)/U(k) and has some extra dimensions. It is shown that a fuzzy 2k-sphere is comprised of n^{\frac{k(k-1)}{2}} spherical D(2k-1)-branes and has a fuzzy 2(k-1)-sphere at each point. We can understand the relationship between these two viewpoints by the dielectric effect. Contraction of the algebra is also discussed.
