Modulation property of flexural-gravity waves on a water surface covered by a compressed ice sheet

We study the nonlinear modulation property of flexural-gravity waves on a water surface covered by a compressed ice sheet of given thickness and density in a basin of a constant depth. For weakly nonlinear perturbations, we derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and investigate the conditions when a quasi-sinusoidal wave becomes unstable with respect to amplitude modulation. The domains of instability are presented in the planes of governing physical parameters; the shapes of the domains exhibit fairly complicated patterns. It is shown that under certain conditions the modulational instability can develop from shorter groups and for fewer wave periods than in the situation of deep-water gravity waves on a free water surface. The modulational instability can occur at the conditions shallower than that known for the free water surface kh = 1.363, where k is the wavenumber and h is the water depth. Estimates of parameters of modulated waves are given for the typical physical conditions of an ice-covered sea.

Reflectionless wave propagation on shallow water with variable bathymetry and current. II

We show that in the linear approximation there are three classes of reflectionless wave propagation on a surface of shallow water in the channel with spatially varying depth, width, and current speed. Two of these classes have been described in our previous paper (Churilov & Stepanyants, 2022), and the third one was discovered recently and is described here. The general analysis of the problem shows that within the approach used in both our papers, these three classes, apparently, exhaust all possible cases of exact solutions of the problem considered. We show that the reflectionless flow can be global at certain conditions, i.e. it can exist on the entire x-axis. There are also reflectionless flows which exist only on the limited intervals of the x-axis.

The inverse problem for the Gross - Pitaevskii equation

Two different methods are proposed for the generation of wide classes of exact solutions to the stationary Gross - Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The first method, suggested by the work by Kondrat'ev and Miller (1966), applies to one-dimensional (1D) GPE. It is based on the similarity between the GPE and the integrable Gardner equation, all solutions of the latter equation (both stationary and nonstationary ones) generating exact solutions to the GPE, with the potential function proportional to the corresponding solutions. The second method is based on the "inverse problem" for the GPE, i.e. construction of a potential function which provides a desirable solution to the equation. Systematic results are presented for 1D and 2D cases. Both methods are illustrated by a variety of localized solutions, including solitary vortices, for both attractive and repulsive nonlinearity in the GPE. The stability of the 1D solutions is tested by direct simulations of the time-dependent GPE.
