Nonlinear Stability of MHD Contact Discontinuities with Surface Tension

We consider the motion of two inviscid, compressible, and electrically conducting fluids separated by an interface across which there is no fluid flow in the presence of surface tension. The magnetic field is supposed to be nowhere tangential to the interface. This leads to the characteristic free boundary problem for contact discontinuities with surface tension in three-dimensional ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We prove the nonlinear structural stability of MHD contact discontinuities with surface tension in Sobolev spaces by a modified Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main ingredient of our proof is deriving the resolution and tame estimate of the linearized problem in usual Sobolev spaces of sufficiently large regularity. In particular, for solving the linearized problem, we introduce a suitable regularization that preserves the transport-type structure for the linearized entropy and divergence of the magnetic field.

On weak stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics

By using an equivalent form of the uniform Lopatinski condition for 1-shocks, we prove that the stability condition found by the energy method in [A. Morando, Y. Trakhinin, P. Trebeschi, Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, Math. Ann. 378 (2020) 1471-1504] for the rectilinear shock waves in two-dimensional flows of compressible isentropic inviscid elastic materials is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability (implying structural nonlinear stability of corresponding curved shock waves). The key point of our spectral analysis is a delicate study of the transition between uniform and weak stability. Moreover, we prove that the rectilinear shock waves are never violently unstable, i.e., they are always either uniformly or weakly stable.

Local Existence of Contact Discontinuities in Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics

We study the free boundary problem for a contact discontinuity for the system of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. A surface of contact discontinuity is a characteristic of this system with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the velocity and the magnetic field are continuous whereas the density, the entropy and the temperature may have a jump. For the two-dimensional case, we prove the local-in-time existence in Sobolev spaces of a unique solution of the free boundary problem provided that the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity.

Stability of an incompressible plasma-vacuum interface with displacement current in vacuum

We study the free boundary problem for a plasma-vacuum interface in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Unlike the classical statement when the vacuum magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, to better understand the influence of the electric field in vacuum we do not neglect the displacement current in the vacuum region and consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. Under the necessary and sufficient stability condition for a planar interface found in [Trakhinin Y. arXiv:1812.08675], we prove an energy a priori estimate for the linearized constant coefficient problem. The process of derivation of this estimate is based on various methods, including a secondary symmetrization of the vacuum Maxwell equations, the derivation of a hyperbolic evolutionary equation for the interface function and the construction of a degenerate Kreiss-type symmetrizer for an elliptic-hyperbolic problem for the total pressure.

Structural stability of shock waves and current-vortex sheets in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics

We study the structural stability of shock waves and current-vortex sheets in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (SMHD) in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous solutions satisfying corresponding jump conditions. The equations of SMHD form a symmetric hyperbolic system which is formally analogous to the system of 2D compressible elastodynamics for particular nonphysical deformations. Using this analogy and the recent results in [Morando A., Trakhinin Y., Trebeschi P. Math. Ann. (2019), https://doi.org/10.1007/s00208-019-01920-6] for shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, we prove that shock waves in SMHD are structurally stable if and only if the fluid height increases across the shock front. For current-vortex sheets the fluid height is continuous whereas the tangential components of the velocity and the magnetic field may have a jump. Applying a so-called secondary symmetrization of the symmetric system of SMHD equations, we find a condition sufficient for the structural stability of current-vortex sheets.

On well-posedness of the plasma-vacuum interface problem: the case of non-elliptic interface symbol

We consider the plasma-vacuum interface problem in a classical statement when in the plasma region the flow is governed by the equations of ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics, while in the vacuum region the magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics. The local-in-time existence and uniqueness of the solution to this problem in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces was proved in [P. Secchi, Y. Trakhinin, Nonlinearity 27 (2014), 105-169], provided that at each point of the initial interface the plasma density is strictly positive and the magnetic fields on either side of the interface are not collinear. The non-collinearity condition appears as the requirement that the symbol associated to the interface is elliptic. We now consider the case when this symbol is not elliptic and study the linearized problem, provided that the unperturbed plasma and vacuum non-zero magnetic fields are collinear on the interface. We prove a basic a priori $L^2$ estimate for this problem under the (generalized) Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial q/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the unperturbed total pressure satisfied at each point of the interface. By constructing an Hadamard-type ill-posedness example for the frozen coefficients linearized problem we show that the simultaneous failure of the non-collinearity condition and the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition leads to Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Well-posedness of the linearized problem for contact MHD discontinuities

We study the free boundary problem for contact discontinuities in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). They are characteristic discontinuities with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the magnetic field and the velocity are continuous whereas the density and the entropy may have a jump. Under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial p/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure satisfied at each point of the unperturbed contact discontinuity, we prove the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of the linearized problem for 2D planar MHD flows.

Influence of vacuum electric field on the stability of a plasma-vacuum interface

We study the free boundary problem for the plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics. Unlike the classical statement, when the vacuum magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, we do not neglect the displacement current in the vacuum region and consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. We show that a sufficiently large vacuum electric field can make the planar interface violently unstable. We find and analyze a sufficient condition on the vacuum electric field that precludes violent instabilities. Under this condition satisfied at each point of the unperturbed nonplanar plasma-vacuum interface, we prove the well-posedness of the linearized problem in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces.

Symmetrizations of RMHD equations and stability of relativistic current-vortex sheets

We consider the equations of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) in the case of special relativity. For the fluid rest frame a nonconservative reformulation of the RMHD equations gives a symmetric system for the vector of primitive (physical) variables. By applying the Lorentz transformation to this system we find a concrete form of symmetric matrices in the LAB-frame. The resulting symmetric system in terms of primitive variables is important for the study of various initial boundary value problems for the RMHD equations. We also find a so-called secondary symmetrization whose direct consequence is the extension of the sufficient stability condition obtained earlier for non-relativistic planar current-vortex sheets to the relativistic case. As in non-relativistic settings, this implies the local-in-time existence of corresponding smooth nonplanar current-vortex sheets.

Well-posedness of the plasma-vacuum interface problem

We consider the free boundary problem for the plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In the plasma region the flow is governed by the usual compressible MHD equations, while in the vacuum region we consider the pre-Maxwell dynamics for the magnetic field. At the free-interface, driven by the plasma velocity, the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic field on both sides is tangent to the boundary. The plasma-vacuum system is not isolated from the outside world, because of a given surface current on the fixed boundary that forces oscillations. Under a suitable stability condition satisfied at each point of the initial interface, stating that the magnetic fields on either side of the interface are not collinear, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the nonlinear plasma-vacuum interface problem in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces. The proof is based on the results proved in the companion paper arXiv:1112.3101, about the well-posedness of the homogeneous linearized problem and the proof of a basic a priori energy estimate. The proof of the resolution of the nonlinear problem given in the present paper follows from the analysis of the elliptic system for the vacuum magnetic field, a suitable tame estimate in Sobolev spaces for the full linearized equations, and a Nash-Moser iteration.

Stability of relativistic plasma-vacuum interfaces

We study the plasma-vacuum interface problem in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics for the case when the plasma density does not go to zero continuously, but jumps. In the vacuum region we consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. We show that a sufficiently large vacuum electric field can make the planar interface violently unstable. By using a suitable secondary symmetrization of the vacuum Maxwell equations, we find a sufficient condition that precludes violent instabilities. Under this condition we derive an energy a priori estimate in the anisotropic weighted Sobolev space $H^1_*$ for the variable coefficients linearized problem for nonplanar plasma-vacuum interfaces.

Well-posedness of the linearized plasma-vacuum interface problem

We consider the free boundary problem for the plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In the plasma region the flow is governed by the usual compressible MHD equations, while in the vacuum region we consider the pre-Maxwell dynamics for the magnetic field. At the free-interface we assume that the total pressure is continuous and that the magnetic field is tangent to the boundary. The plasma density does not go to zero continuously at the interface, but has a jump, meaning that it is bounded away from zero in the plasma region and it is identically zero in the vacuum region. Under a suitable stability condition satisfied at each point of the plasma-vacuum interface, we prove the well-posedness of the linearized problem in conormal Sobolev spaces.

On the well-posedness of a linearized plasma-vacuum interface problem in ideal compressible MHD

We study the initial-boundary value problem resulting from the linearization of the plasma-vacuum interface problem in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We suppose that the plasma and the vacuum regions are unbounded domains and the plasma density does not go to zero continuously, but jumps. For the basic state upon which we perform linearization we find two cases of well-posedness of the "frozen" coefficient problem: the "gas dynamical" case and the "purely MHD" case. In the "gas dynamical" case we assume that the jump of the normal derivative of the total pressure is always negative. In the "purely MHD" case this condition can be violated but the plasma and the vacuum magnetic fields are assumed to be non-zero and non-parallel to each other everywhere on the interface. For this case we prove a basic a priori estimate in the anisotropic weighted Sobolev space $H^1_*$ for the variable coefficient problem.
