The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Determination of $|V_{cb}|$ using N$^3$LO perturbative corrections to $Γ(B \to X_c \ell ν)$ and 1S masses

We determine $|V_{cb}|$ using the third-order perturbative series for the inclusive semileptonic $B$ decay width and for the masses of the bottomonium 1S states. We use the masses of $η_b(1S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ as short-distance masses and point out that there is a sizable difference of $|V_{cb}|$ between the two 1S mass schemes. This is the dominant error of our determination and stems from insufficiency to describe theoretically the observed mass splitting of the bottomonium 1S states. We also study the significance of the $\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^2)$ non-perturbative effects in HQET with respect to the current perturbative accuracy. Our result $|V_{cb}|=0.0425 (11)$ is consistent with the PDG value determined from the inclusive decays and has a slightly larger error.

Renormalon subtraction in OPE using Fourier transform: Formulation and application to various observables

Properly separating and subtracting renormalons in the framework of the operator product expansion (OPE) is a way to realize high precision computation of QCD effects in high energy physics. We propose a new method (FTRS method), which enables to subtract multiple renormalons simultaneously from a general observable. It utilizes a property of Fourier transform, and the leading Wilson coefficient is written in a one-parameter integral form whose integrand has suppressed (or vanishing) renormalons. The renormalon subtraction scheme coincides with the usual principal-value prescription at large orders. We perform test analyses and subtract the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^4)$ renormalon from the Adler function, the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^2)$ renormalon from the $B\to X_ul\barν$ decay width, and the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ and ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^2)$ renormalons from the $B,\,D$ meson masses. The analyses show good consistency with theoretical expectations, such as improved convergence and scale dependence. In particular we obtain $\barΛ_{\rm FTRS}=0.495\pm0.053~\text{GeV}$ and$ (μ_π^2)_{\rm FTRS}=-0.12\pm 0.23~\text{GeV}^2$ for the non-perturbative parameters of HQET. We explain the formulation and analyses in detail.

On renormalons of static QCD potential at $u=1/2$ and $3/2$

We investigate the $u=1/2$ [$\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$] and $u=3/2$ [$\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^3)$] renormalons in the static QCD potential in position space and momentum space using the OPE of the potential-NRQCD effective field theory. This is an old problem and we provide a formal formulation to analyze it. In particular we present detailed examinations of the $u=3/2$ renormalons. We clarify how the $u=3/2$ renormalon is suppressed in the momentum-space potential in relation with the Wilson coefficient $V_A(r)$. We also point out that it is not straightforward to subtract the IR renormalon and IR divergences simultaneously in the multipole expansion. Numerical analyses are given, which clarify the current status of our knowledge on the perturbative series. The analysis gives a positive reasoning to the method for subtracting renormalons used in recent $α_s(M_Z)$ determination from the QCD potential.

Bound-state effects on kinematical distributions of top quarks at hadron colliders

First we present a theoretical framework to compute the fully differential cross sections for the top-quark productions and their subsequent decays at hadron colliders, incorporating the bound-state effects which are important in the t\bar{t} threshold region. We include the bound-state effects such that the cross sections are correct in the LO approximation both in the threshold and high-energy regions. Then, based on this framework we compute various kinematical distributions of top quarks as well as of their decay products at the LHC, by means of Monte-Carlo event-generation. These are compared with the corresponding predictions based on conventional perturbative QCD. In particular, we find a characteristic bound-state effect on the (bW^+)-(\bar{b}W^-) double-invariant-mass distribution, which is deformed to the lower invariant-mass side in a correlated manner.

Computation of Heavy Quarkonium Spectrum in Perturbative QCD

Non-relativistic bound state theories for QED and QCD have become fairly mature and amenable to a textbook-level understanding and computation. In this talk we give an introductory review of the following subjects related to the recent computation of the heavy quarkonium spectrum using perturbative QCD: (1) Technological developments in higher-order computation, (2) Physics predictions, (3) Challenge towards analytic evaluation of the 3-loop static QCD potential.

On enhanced corrections from quasi-degenerate states to heavy quarkonium observables

It is well known that in perturbation theory existence of quasi-degenerate states can rearrange the order counting. For a heavy quarkonium system, naively, enhanced effects ($l$-changing mixing effects) could contribute already to the first-order and third-order corrections to the wave function and the energy level, respectively, in expansion in $α_s$. We present a formulation and note that the corresponding (lowest-order) corrections vanish due to absence of the relevant off-diagonal matrix elements. As a result, in the quarkonium energy level and leptonic decay width, the enhanced effects are expected to appear, respectively, in the fifth- and fourth-order corrections and beyond.

A Scale-invariant Higgs Sector and Structure of the Vacuum

In view of the current status of measured Higgs boson properties, we consider a question whether only the Higgs self-interactions can deviate significantly from the Standard-Model (SM) predictions. This may be possible if the Higgs effective potential is irregular at the origin. As an example we investigate an extended Higgs sector with singlet scalar(s) and classical scale invariance. We develop a perturbative formulation necessary to analyze this model in detail. The behavior of a phenomenologically valid potential in the perturbative regime is studied around the electroweak scale. We reproduce known results: The Higgs self-interactions are substantially stronger than the SM predictions, while the Higgs interactions with other SM particles are barely changed. We further predict that the interactions of singlet scalar(s), which is a few to several times heavier than the Higgs boson, tend to be fairly strong. If probed, these features will provide vivid clues to the structure of the vacuum. We also examine Veltman's condition for the Higgs boson mass.

Study of top quark pair production near threshold at the ILC

We report on a study of top pair production at the International Linear Collider (ILC) around center of mass energy (E$_{\rm CM}$) = 350 GeV using an ILD detector simulator based on the Detailed Baseline Design (DBD) configuration. Here we will report on a result of 6-Jet final state, $t\ bar{t} \rightarrow bWbW \rightarrow bqqbqq$. A result for the 4-Jet final state, $t\ bar{t} \rightarrow bWbW \rightarrow bqqblν$, which has almost the same statics as that of the 6-Jet final state will be included in the future. For an energy scan of 11 center of mass energy points (340 - 350GeV) and two beam polarization combinations (P($e^+,\ e^-$) = ($\pm$0.3, $\mp$0.8)) with 10 fb$^{-1}$ each, the statistical errors on the top quark Yukawa coupling, its mass and width are estimated. The results are $δy_t$ = 4.2%, $δm_t$ = 16 MeV in potential subtracted scheme (PS), and $δΓ_t$ = 21 MeV.

Measuring the top Yukawa coupling at the ILC at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV

We report on the feasibility of the direct measurement of the top Yukawa coupling g_t at the International Linear Collider (ILC) during its first phase of operation with a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. The signal and background models incorporate the non-relativistic QCD corrections which enhance the production cross section near the t-tbar threshold. The e+e- -> t tbar H signal is reconstructed in the 6-jet + lepton and the 8-jet modes. The results from the two channels are combined. The background processes considered are e+e- -> t bbar W- / tbar b W+ (which includes e+e- -> t tbar), e+e- -> t tbar Z, and e+e- -> t tbar g* -> t tbar b bar. We use a realistic fast Monte-Carlo detector simulation. Signal events are selected using event shape variables, through jet clustering, and by identifying heavy flavor jets. Assuming a Higgs mass of 120 GeV, polarized electron and positron beams with (Pe-,Pe+) = (-0.8,+0.3), and an integrated luminosity of 1 ab-1, we estimate that the e+e- -> t tbar H events can be seen with a statistical significance of 5.2 sigma, corresponding to the relative top Yukawa coupling measurement accuracy of |Delta g_t / g_t| = 10%.

Tests of a Family Gauge Symmetry Model at 10^3 TeV Scale

Based on a specific model with U(3) family gauge symmetry at $10^3$ TeV scale, we show its experimental signatures to search for. Since the gauge symmetry is introduced with a special purpose, its gauge coupling constant and gauge boson mass spectrum are not free. The current structure in this model leads to family number violations via exchange of extra gauge bosons. We investigate present constraints from flavor changing processes and discuss visible signatures at LHC and lepton colliders.
