A Chandra view of SPT-CL J0217-5014: a massive galaxy cluster at a cosmic intersection at z=0.53

Galaxy clusters trace the densest regions of the cosmic web and are crucial laboratories for studying the thermodynamic and chemical evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM). We present a Chandra study of the massive galaxy cluster SPT-CL J0217-5014 ($z \sim 0.53$; $M_{\rm 500} \sim 3 \times 10^{14}~\rm M_{\odot}$), previously reported as a Swift serendipitous clusters with the highest Fe abundance ($\sim 1.3\pm 0.4$ $\rm Z_{\odot}$ within $\sim 1'.7$) and a potentially disturbed morphology. The X-ray morphology reveals a disturbed ICM with a surface brightness edge at $\sim 0'.26$ ($\sim 100$ kpc) to the west and a tail-like feature extending towards the east. The best-fit metal abundance within 1'.5 ($\sim 0.7\rm R_{500}$) is $0.61_{-0.23}^{+0.26}~\rm Z_{\odot}$. The derived central electron number density, entropy, and cooling time classify this system as a non-cool-core cluster, suggesting that merger activity has likely disrupted the possible pre-existing cool core. At larger radii ($\sim 1' - 2'$), we detect excess X-ray emission to the south, spatially aligned with a filamentary distribution of red galaxies, indicating ongoing accretion along an intracluster filament. Based on the DESI DR9 cross-matched optical clusters and photometric redshifts, we identify three nearby, lower-mass clusters that likely trace the large-scale structures, suggesting that SPT-CL~J0217-5014 is the primary node of a dynamically active environment where past mergers and anisotropic accretion along cosmic filaments have shaped the present-day ICM.

A Study of Gas Entropy Profiles of 47 Galaxy Clusters and Groups Out to the Virial Radius

Some observations such as those presented in Walker et al. show that the observed entropy profiles of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) deviate from the power-law prediction of adiabatic simulations. This implies that non-gravitational processes, which are absent in the simulations, may be important in the evolution of the ICM, and by quantifying the deviation, we may be able to estimate the feedback energy in the ICM and use it as a probe of the non-gravitational processes. To address this issue we calculate the ICM entropy profiles in a sample of 47 galaxy clusters and groups, which have been observed out to at least $\sim r_{500}$ with Chandra, XMM-Newton and/or Suzaku, by constructing a physical model to incorporate the effects of both gravity and non-gravitational processes to fit the observed gas temperature and surface brightness profiles via Bayesian statistics. After carefully evaluating the effects of systematic errors, we find that the gas entropy profiles derived with best-fit results of our model are consistent with the simulation-predicted power-law profile near the virial radius, while the flattened profiles reported previously can be explained by introducing the gas clumping effect, the existence of which is confirmed in 19 luminous targets in our sample. We calculate the total feedback energy per particle and find that it decreases from $\sim 10$ keV at the center to about zero at $\sim 0.35$$r_{200}$ and is consistent with zero outside $\sim 0.35$$r_{200}$, implying the upper limit of the feedback efficiency $\sim 0.02$ for the super-massive black holes hosted in the brightest cluster galaxies.

Constructing a Family Tree of Ten Indo-European Languages with Delexicalized Cross-linguistic Transfer Patterns

It is reasonable to hypothesize that the divergence patterns formulated by historical linguists and typologists reflect constraints on human languages, and are thus consistent with Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in a certain way. In this paper, we validate this hypothesis on ten Indo-European languages. We formalize the delexicalized transfer as interpretable tree-to-string and tree-to-tree patterns which can be automatically induced from web data by applying neural syntactic parsing and grammar induction technologies. This allows us to quantitatively probe cross-linguistic transfer and extend inquiries of SLA. We extend existing works which utilize mixed features and support the agreement between delexicalized cross-linguistic transfer and the phylogenetic structure resulting from the historical-comparative paradigm.

Effects of single- and multi-substituted Zn ions in doped-122 type iron-based superconductors

Recent experiments on Zn-substituted 122-type iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) at electron- and hole- doped region provide us with a testing ground for understanding the effect of Zn impurities in these systems. Our first-principle calculations of the electronic structure reveal that the Zn 3d orbitals are far below the Fermi level and chemically inactive, while the Zn 4s-orbital is partially occupied and its wave function overlapping with those 3d-orbitals of neighboring Fe-ions. This suggests that the impurity effect is originating in the Zn 4s-orbital, not its 3d-orbitals. Employing a phenomenological two-orbital lattice model for 122-FeSCs and the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we study how the Zn-impurities suppress the superconductivity in electron- and hole- doped compounds. Our obtained results qualitatively agree with the experimental measurements.

Experimental Detection of Entanglement Polytopes via Local Filters

Entanglement polytopes result in finitely many types of entanglement that can be detected by only measuring single-particle spectra. With high probability, however, the local spectra lie in more than one polytope, hence providing no information about the entanglement type. To overcome this problem, we propose to additionally use local filters. We experimentally demonstrate the detection of entanglement polytopes in a four-qubit system. Using local filters we can distinguish the entanglement type of states with the same single particle spectra, but which belong to different polytopes.

Phase diagram of the isovalent phosphorous-substituted 122-type iron pnictides

Recent experiments demonstrated that isovalent doping system gives the similar phase diagram as the heterovalent doped cases. For example, with the phosphorous (P)-doping, the magnetic order in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ compound is first suppressed, then the superconductivity dome emerges to an extended doping region but eventually it disappears at large $x$. With the help of a minimal two-orbital model for both BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$, together with the self-consistent lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation, we calculate the phase diagram against the P content $x$ in which the doped isovalent P-atoms are treated as impurities. We show that our numerical results can qualitatively compare with the experimental measurements.

Effect of edge decoration on the energy spectrum of semi-infinite lattices

Analytical studies of the effect of edge decoration on the energy spectrum of semi-infinite one-dimensional (1D) lattice chain with Peierls phase transition and zigzag edged graphene (ZEG) are presented by means of transfer matrix method, in the frame of which the sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of the edge states are determined. For 1D lattice chain, the zero-energy edge state exists when Peierls phase transition happens regardless whether the decoration exists or not, while the non-zero-energy edge states can be induced and manipulated through adjusting the edge decoration. On the other hand, the semi-infinite ZEG model with nearest-neighbor interaction can be mapped into the 1D lattice chain case. The non-zero-energy edge states can be induced by the decoration as well, and we can obtain the condition of the decoration on the edge for the existence of the novel edge states.
