Positive definite functions on a regular domain

We define positive and strictly positive definite functions on a domain and study these functions on a list of regular domains. The list includes the unit ball, conic surface, hyperbolic surface, solid hyperboloid, and simplex. Each of these domains is embedded in a quadrant or a union of quadrants of the unit sphere by a distance preserving map, from which characterizations of positive definite and strictly positive definite functions are derived for these regular domains.

$\ell^1$-summability and Fourier series of B-splines with respect to their knots

We study the $\ell^1$-summability of functions in the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ and so-called $\ell^1$-invariant functions. Those are functions on the torus whose Fourier coefficients depend only on the $\ell^1$-norm of their indices. Such functions are characterized as divided differences that have $\cos θ_1,\ldots,\cosθ_d$ as knots for $(θ_1\,\ldots, θ_d) \in \mathbb{T}^d$. It leads us to consider the $d$-dimensional Fourier series of univariate B-splines with respect to its knots, which turns out to enjoy a simple bi-orthogonality that can be used to obtain an orthogonal series of the B-spline function.

Monomial and Rodrigues orthogonal polynomials on the cone

We study two families of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $w(t)(t^2-\|x\|^2)^{μ-\frac12}$, $μ> -\frac 12$, on the cone $\{(x,t): \|x\| \le t, \, x \in \mathbb{R}^d, t >0\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. The first family consists of monomial polynomials $\mathsf{V}_{\mathbf{k},n}(x,t) = t^{n-|\mathbf{k}|} x^\mathbf{k} + \cdots$ for $\mathbf{k} \in \mathbb{N}_0^d$ with $|\mathbf{k}| \le n$, which has the least $L^2$ norm among all polynomials of the form $t^{n-|\mathbf{k}|} x^\mathbf{k} + \mathsf{P}$ with $°\mathsf{P} \le n-1$, and we will provide an explicit construction for $\mathsf{V}_{\mathbf{k},n}$. The second family consists of orthogonal polynomials defined by the Rodrigues type formulas when $w$ is either the Laguerre weight or the Jacobi weight, which satisfies a generating function in both cases. The two families of polynomials are partially biorthogonal.

Optimal charging of a superconducting quantum battery

Quantum batteries are miniature energy storage devices and play a very important role in quantum thermodynamics. In recent years, quantum batteries have been extensively studied, but limited in theoretical level. Here we report the experimental realization of a quantum battery based on superconducting qubits. Our model explores dark and bright states to achieve stable and powerful charging processes, respectively. Our scheme makes use of the quantum adiabatic brachistochrone, which allows us to speed up the {battery ergotropy injection. Due to the inherent interaction of the system with its surrounding, the battery exhibits a self-discharge, which is shown to be described by a supercapacitor-like self-discharging mechanism. Our results paves the way for proposals of new superconducting circuits able to store extractable work for further usage.

Scalable Method for Eliminating Residual $ZZ$ Interaction between Superconducting Qubits

Unwanted $ZZ$ interaction is a quantum-mechanical crosstalk phenomenon which correlates qubit dynamics and is ubiquitous in superconducting qubit systems. It adversely affects the quality of quantum operations and can be detrimental in scalable quantum information processing. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a practically extensible approach for complete cancellation of residual $ZZ$ interaction between fixed-frequency transmon qubits, which are known for long coherence and simple control. We apply to the intermediate coupler that connects the qubits a weak microwave drive at a properly chosen frequency in order to noninvasively induce an ac Stark shift for $ZZ$ cancellation. We verify the cancellation performance by measuring vanishing two-qubit entangling phases and $ZZ$ correlations. In addition, we implement a randomized benchmarking experiment to extract the idling gate fidelity which shows good agreement with the coherence limit, demonstrating the effectiveness of $ZZ$ cancellation. Our method allows independent addressability of each qubit-qubit connection, and is applicable to both nontunable and tunable couplers, promising better compatibility with future large-scale quantum processors.

Laguerre expansions on conic domains

We study the Fourier orthogonal expansions with respect to the Laguerre type weigh functions on the conic surface of revolution and the domain bounded by such a surface. The main results include a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels, which is the kernel of the orthogonal projection operator and a pseudo convolution structure on the conic domain; the latter is shown to be bounded in an appropriate $L^p$ space and used to study mean convergence of the Cesàro means of the Laguerre expansions on conic domains.

Phase sensitive Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference in superconducting quantum circuit

Superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) architecture composed of superconducting qubit and resonator is a powerful platform for exploring quantum physics and quantum information processing. By employing techniques developed for superconducting quantum computing, we experimentally investigate phase-sensitive Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference phenomena in a circuit QED. Our experiments cover a large range of LZS transition parameters, and demonstrate the LZS induced Rabi-like oscillation as well as phase-dependent steady-state population.

Demonstration of Controlled-Phase Gates between Two Error-Correctable Photonic Qubits

To realize fault-tolerant quantum computing, it is necessary to store quantum information in logical qubits with error correction functions, realized by distributing a logical state among multiple physical qubits or by encoding it in the Hilbert space of a high-dimensional system. Quantum gate operations between these error-correctable logical qubits, which are essential for implementation of any practical quantum computational task, have not been experimentally demonstrated yet. Here we demonstrate a geometric method for realizing controlled-phase gates between two logical qubits encoded in photonic fields stored in cavities. The gates are realized by dispersively coupling an ancillary superconducting qubit to these cavities and driving it to make a cyclic evolution depending on the joint photonic state of the cavities, which produces a conditional geometric phase. We first realize phase gates for photonic qubits with the logical basis states encoded in two quasiorthogonal coherent states, which have important implications for continuous-variable-based quantum computation. Then we use this geometric method to implement a controlled-phase gate between two binomially encoded logical qubits, which have an error-correctable function.

Experimental implementation of universal nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates in a superconducting circuit

Using geometric phases to realize noise-resilient quantum computing is an important method to enhance the control fidelity. In this work, we experimentally realize a universal nonadiabatic geometric quantum gate set in a superconducting qubit chain. We characterize the realized single- and two-qubit geometric gates with both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods. The measured average fidelities for the single-qubit rotation gates and two-qubit controlled-Z gate are 0.9977(1) and 0.977(9), respectively. Besides, we also experimentally demonstrate the noise-resilient feature of the realized single-qubit geometric gates by comparing their performance with the conventional dynamical gates with different types of errors in the control field. Thus, our experiment proves a way to achieve high-fidelity geometric quantum gates for robust quantum computation.

Hahn polynomials for hypergeometric distribution

Orthogonal polynomials for the multivariate hypergeometric distribution are defined on lattices in polyhedral domains in $\RR^d$. Their structures are studied through a detailed analysis of classical Hahn polynomials with negative integer parameters. Factorization of the Hahn polynomials is explored and used to explain the relation between the index set of orthogonal polynomials and the lattice set in polyhedral domain. In the multivariate case, these constructions lead to nontrivial families of hypergeometric polynomials vanishing on lattice polyhedra. The generating functions and bispectral properties of the orthogonal polynomials are also discussed.

Hahn polynomials on polyhedra and quantum integrability

Orthogonal polynomials with respect to the hypergeometric distribution on lattices in polyhedral domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which include hexagons in ${\mathbb R}^2$ and truncated tetrahedrons in ${\mathbb R}^3$, are defined and studied. The polynomials are given explicitly in terms of the classical one-dimensional Hahn polynomials. They are also characterized as common eigenfunctions of a family of commuting partial difference operators. These operators provide symmetries for a system that can be regarded as a discrete extension of the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere. Moreover, the discrete system is proved to possess all essential properties of the continuous system. In particular, the symmetry operators for the discrete Hamiltonian define a representation of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra on the space of orthogonal polynomials, and an explicit set of $2d-1$ generators for the symmetry algebra is constructed. Furthermore, other discrete quantum superintegrable systems, which extend the quantum harmonic oscillator, are obtained by considering appropriate limits of the parameters.

Intertwining operator associated to symmetric groups and summability on the unit sphere

An integral representation of the intertwining operator for the Dunkl operators associated with symmetric groups is derived for the class of functions of a single component. The expression provides a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels of $h$-harmonics associated with symmetric groups when one of the components is a coordinate vector. The latter allows us to establish a sharp result for the Cesàro summability of $h$-harmonic series on the unit sphere.

Non-homogeneous wave equation on a cone

The wave equation $\left(\partial_{tt} - c^2 Δ_x\right) u(x,t) = e^{-t} f(x,t)$ is shown to have a unique solution if $u$ and its partial derivatives in $x$ are in $L^2(e^{-t})$ on the cone, and the solution can be explicit given in the Fourier series of orthogonal polynomials on the cone. This provides a particular solution for the boundary value problems of the non-homogeneous wave equation on the cone, which can be combined with a solution to the homogeneous wave equation in the cone to obtain the full solution.

Orthogonal structure on a quadratic curve

Orthogonal polynomials on quadratic curves in the plane are studied. These include orthogonal polynomials on ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas, and two lines. For an integral with respect to an appropriate weight function defined on any quadratic curve, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is constructed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Convergence of the Fourier orthogonal expansions is also studied in each case. As an application, we see that the resulting bases can be used to interpolate functions on the real line with singularities of the form $|x|$, $\sqrt{x^2+ ε^2}$, or $1/x$, with exponential convergence.

Experimental Quantum Randomness Processing

Coherently manipulating multipartite quantum correlations leads to remarkable advantages in quantum information processing. A fundamental question is whether such quantum advantages persist only by exploiting multipartite correlations, such as entanglement. Recently, Dale, Jennings, and Rudolph negated the question by showing that a randomness processing, quantum Bernoulli factory, using quantum coherence, is strictly more powerful than the one with classical mechanics. In this Letter, focusing on the same scenario, we propose a theoretical protocol that is classically impossible but can be implemented solely using quantum coherence without entanglement. We demonstrate the protocol by exploiting the high-fidelity quantum state preparation and measurement with a superconducting qubit in the circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture and a nearly quantum-limited parametric amplifier. Our experiment shows the advantage of using quantum coherence of a single qubit for information processing even when multipartite correlation is not present.

Minimal Cubature rules and polynomial interpolation in two variables II

As a complement to \cite{X12}, minimal cubature rules of degree $4m+1$ for the weight functions $$ \mathcal{W}_{α,β,\pm \frac12}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2α+1} |x-y|^{2β+1} ((1-x^2)(1-y^2))^{\pm \frac12} $$ on $[-1,1]^2$ are shown to exist and near minimal cubature rules of the same degree with one node more than minimal are constructed explicitly. The Lagrange interpolation polynomials on the nodes of the near minimal cubature rules are also studied.

Wronskians of Fourier and Laplace Transforms

Associated with a given suitable function, or a measure, on $\mathbb{R}$, we introduce a correlation function, so that the Wronskian of the Fourier transform of the function is the Fourier transform of the corresponding correlation function, and the same holds for the Laplace transform. We obtain two types of results. First, we show that Wronskians of the Fourier transform of a nonnegative function on $\mathbb{R}$ are positive definite functions and the Wronskians of the Laplace transform of a nonnegative function on $\mathbb{R}_+$ are completely monotone functions. Then we establish necessary and sufficient conditions in order that a real entire function, defined as a Fourier transform of a positive kernel $K$, belongs to the Laguerre-Pólya class, which answers an old question of Pólya. The characterization is given in terns of a density property of the correlation kernel related to $K$, via classical results of Laguerre and Jensen and employing Wiener's $L^1$ Tauberian theorem. As a consequence we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the Riemann hypothesis in terms of a density of the translations of the correlation function related to the Riemann $ξ$-function.

Generalized characteristic polynomials and Gaussian cubature rules

For a family of near banded Toeplitz matrices, generalized characteristic polynomials are shown to be orthogonal polynomials of two variables, which include the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind on the deltoid as a special case. These orthogonal polynomials possess maximal number of real common zeros, which generate a family of Gaussian cubature rules in two variables.

Orthogonal expansions for generalized Gegenbauer weight function on the unit ball

Orthogonal polynomials and expansions are studied for the weight function $h_κ^2(x) \|x\|^{2ν} (1-\|x\|^2)^{μ-1/2}$ on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $h_κ$ is a reflection invariant function, and for related weight function on the simplex of $\mathbb{R}^d$. A concise formula for the reproducing kernels of orthogonal subspaces is derived and used to study summability of the Fourier orthogonal expansions.

Positivity and Fourier integrals over regular hexagon

Let $f \in L^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$ and let $\widehat f$ be its Fourier integral. We study summability of the partial integral $S_{ρ,\mathsf{H}}(x)=\int_{\{\|y\|_\mathsf{H} \le ρ\}} e^{i x\cdot y}\widehat f(y) dy$, where $\|y\|_\mathsf{H}$ denotes the uniform norm taken over the regular hexagonal domain. We prove that the Riesz $(R,δ)$ means of the inverse Fourier integrals are nonnegative if and if $δ\ge 2$. Moreover, we describe a class of $\|\cdot\|_\mathsf{H}$-radial functions that are positive definite on $\mathbb{R}^2$.

An integral identity with applications in orthogonal polynomials

For $\boldsymbol{\large λ} = (λ_1,\ldots,λ_d)$ with $λ_i > 0$, it is proved that \begin{equation*} \prod_{i=1}^d \frac{ 1}{(1- r x_i)^{λ_i}} = \frac{Γ(|\boldsymbol{\large λ}|)}{\prod_{i=1}^{d} Γ(λ_i)} \int_{\mathcal{T}^d} \frac{1}{ (1- r \langle x, u \rangle)^{|\boldsymbol{\large λ}|}} \prod_{i=1}^d u_i^{λ_i-1} du, \end{equation*} where $\mathcal{T}^d$ is the simplex in homogeneous coordinates of $\mathbb{R}^d$, from which a new integral relation for Gegenbuer polynomials of different indexes is deduced. The latter result is used to derive closed formulas for reproducing kernels of orthogonal polynomials on the unit cube and on the unit ball.

Best Polynomial Approximation on the Unit Sphere and the Unit Ball

This is a survey on best polynomial approximation on the unit sphere and the unit ball. The central problem is to describe the approximation behavior of a function by polynomials via smoothness of the function. A major effort is to identify a correct gadget that characterizes smoothness of functions, either a modulus of smoothness or a $K$- functional, the two of which are often equivalent. We will concentrate on characterization of best approximations, given in terms of direct and converse theorems, and report several moduli of smoothness and $K$-functionals, including recent results that give a fairly satisfactory characterization of best approximation by polynomials for functions in $L^p$ spaces, the space of continuous functions, and Sobolev spaces.

Slater determinants of orthogonal polynomials

The symmetrized Slater determinants of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a non-negative Borel measure are shown to be represented by constant multiple of Hankel determinants of two other families of polynomials, and they can also be written in terms of Selberg type integrals. Applications include positive determinants of polynomials of several variables and Jensen polynomials and its derivatives for entire functions.

The Hardy-Rellich inequality and uncertainty principle on the sphere

Let $Δ_0$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that the Hardy-Rellich inequality of the form $$ \int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} \left | f (x)\right|^2 dσ(x) \leq c_d \min_{e\in \mathbb{S}^{d-1}} \int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (1- \langle x, e \rangle) \left |(-Δ_0)^{\frac{1}{2}}f(x) \right |^2 dσ(x) $$ holds for $d =2$ and $d \ge 4$ but does not hold for $d=3$ with any finite constant, and the optimal constant for the inequality is $c_d = 8/(d-3)^2$ for $d =2, 4, 5$ and, under additional restrictions on the function space, for $d\ge 6$. This inequality yields an uncertainty principle of the form $$ \min_{e\in\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} \int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (1- \langle x, e \rangle) |f(x)|^2 dσ(x) \int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}\left |\nabla_0 f(x)\right |^2 dσ(x) \ge c'_d $$ on the sphere for functions with zero mean and unit norm, which can be used to establish another uncertainty principle without zero mean assumption, both of which appear to be new. This paper is published in Constructive Approximation, 40(2014): 141-171. An erratum is now appended.

Tight Frame with Hahn and Krawtchouk Polynomials of Several Variables

Finite tight frames for polynomial subspaces are constructed using monic Hahn polynomials and Krawtchouk polynomials of several variables. Based on these polynomial frames, two methods for constructing tight frames for the Euclidean spaces are designed. With ${\mathsf r}(d,n):= \binom{n+d-1}{n}$, the first method generates, for each $m \ge n$, two families of tight frames in ${\mathbb R}^{{\mathsf r}(d,n)}$ with ${\mathsf r}(d+1,m)$ elements. The second method generates a tight frame in ${\mathbb R}^{{\mathsf r}(d,N)}$ with $1 + N \times{\mathsf r}(d+1, N)$ vectors. All frame elements are given in explicit formulas.

Uncertainty principle on weighted spheres, balls and simplexes

For a family of weight functions $h_κ$ that are invariant under a reflection group, the uncertainty principle on the unit sphere in the form of $$ \min_{1 \le i \le d} \int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (1- x_i) |f(x)|^2 h_κ^2(x) dσ\int_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}\left |\nabla_0 f(x)\right |^2 h_κ^2(x) dσ\ge c $$ is established for invariant functions $f$ that have unit norm and zero mean, where $\nabla_0$ is the spherical gradient. In the same spirit, uncertainty principles for weighted spaces on the unit ball and on the standard simplex are established, some of them hold for all admissible functions instead of invariant functions.

Hahn, Jacobi, and Krawtchouck polynomials of several variables

Hahn polynomials of several variables can be defined by using the Jacobi polynomials on the simplex as a generating function. Starting from this connection, a number of properties for these two families of orthogonal polynomials are derived. It is shown that the Hahn polynomials appear as connecting coefficients between several families of orthogonal polynomials on the simplex. Closed-form formulas are derived for the reproducing kernels of the Hahn polynomials and Krawtchouck polynomials. As an application, the Poisson kernels for the Hahn polynomials and the Krawtchouck polynomials are shown to be nonnegative.

Spectral approximation on the unit ball

Spectral approximation by polynomials on the unit ball is studied in the frame of the Sobolev spaces $W^{s}_p(\ball)$, $1<p<\infty$. The main results give sharp estimates on the order of approximation by polynomials in the Sobolev spaces and explicit construction of approximating polynomials. One major effort lies in understanding the structure of orthogonal polynomials with respect to an inner product of the Sobolev space $W_2^s(\ball)$. As an application, a direct and efficient spectral-Galerkin method based on our orthogonal polynomials is proposed for the second and the fourth order elliptic equations on the unit ball, its optimal error estimates are explicitly derived for both procedures in the Sobolev spaces and, finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretic results.

Discrete Fourier Analysis and Chebyshev Polynomials with $G_2$ Group

The discrete Fourier analysis on the $30^{\degree}$-$60^{\degree}$-$90^{\degree}$ triangle is deduced from the corresponding results on the regular hexagon by considering functions invariant under the group $G_2$, which leads to the definition of four families generalized Chebyshev polynomials. The study of these polynomials leads to a Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem that contains two parameters, whose solutions are analogues of the Jacobi polynomials. Under a concept of $m$-degree and by introducing a new ordering among monomials, these polynomials are shown to share properties of the ordinary orthogonal polynomials. In particular, their common zeros generate cubature rules of Gauss type.

Weighted Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball

For the weight function $W_μ(x) = (1-|x|^2)^μ$, $μ> -1$, $λ> 0$ and $b_μ$ a normalizing constant, a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to the inner product $$ \la f,g \ra = {b_μ[\int_{\BB^d} f(x) g(x) W_μ(x) dx + λ\int_{\BB^d} \nabla f(x) \cdot \nabla g(x) W_μ(x) dx]} $$ are constructed in terms of spherical harmonics and a sequence of Sobolev orthog onal polynomials of one variable. The latter ones, hence, the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $\la \cdot,\cdot\ra$, can be generated through a recursive formula.

Positive cubature rules of degree 4 and 5 on the $d$-dimensional simplex are constructed and used to construct cubature rules of index 8 or degree 9 on the unit sphere. The latter ones lead to explicit isometric embedding among the classical Banach spaces. Orthogonal polynomials and expansions for a family of weight functions in two variables

Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on $[-1,1]^2$, $$ \CW_{\a,\b,\g}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} (1-x^2)^\g(1-y^2)^{\g}, $$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of $\g = \pm 1/2$, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.

Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on a simplex

The Jacobi polynomials on the simplex are orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $W_\bg(x) = x_1^{\g_1} ... x_d^{\g_d} (1- |x|)^{\g_{d+1}}$ when all $\g_i > -1$ and they are eigenfunctions of a second order partial differential operator $L_\bg$. The singular cases that some, or all, $\g_1,...,\g_{d+1}$ are -1 are studied in this paper. Firstly a complete basis of polynomials that are eigenfunctions of $L_\bg$ in each singular case is found. Secondly, these polynomials are shown to be orthogonal with respect to an inner product which is explicitly determined. This inner product involves derivatives of the functions, hence the name Sobolev orthogonal polynomials.

A Solvable Mixed Charge Ensemble on the Line: Global Results

We consider an ensemble of interacting charged particles on the line consisting of two species of particles with charge ratio 2 : 1 in the presence of the harmonic oscillator potential. The system is assumed to be at temperature corresponding to β= 1 and the sum of the charges is fixed. We investigate the distribution of the number as well as the spatial density of each species of particle in the limit as the total charge increases to \infty. These results will follow from the fact that the system of particles forms a Pfaffian point process. We produce the skew-orthogonal polynomials necessary to simplify the related matrix kernels.

Discrete Fourier analysis on fundamental domain of $A_d$ lattice and on simplex in $d$-variables

A discrete Fourier analysis on the fundamental domain $Ω_d$ of the $d$-dimensional lattice of type $A_d$ is studied, where $Ω_2$ is the regular hexagon and $Ω_3$ is the rhombic dodecahedron, and analogous results on $d$-dimensional simplex are derived by considering invariant and anti-invariant elements. Our main results include Fourier analysis in trigonometric functions, interpolation and cubature formulas on these domains. In particular, a trigonometric Lagrange interpolation on the simplex is shown to satisfy an explicit compact formula and the Lebesgue constant of the interpolation is shown to be in the order of $(\log n)^d$. The basic trigonometric functions on the simplex can be identified with Chebyshev polynomials in several variables already appeared in literature. We study common zeros of these polynomials and show that they are nodes for a family of Gaussian cubature formulas, which provides only the second known example of such formulas.
