Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Is there an effect of a nontrivial $c_T$ during inflation?

Recently, we have shown that the propagation speed $c_T$ of the primordial gravitational waves (GWs) might be nontrivially varying during inflation, which could induce local oscillations in the power spectrum of primordial GWs. In this paper, we numerically confirm that, although with a disformal redefinition of the metric the nontrivial $c_T$ may be set as unity, the power spectrum in the frame with $c_T=1$ is completely the same as that in the original disformal frame, i.e., the oscillating shape in the power spectrum is still reserved, since here the effect of $c_T$ is actually encoded in the nontrivially varying Hubble parameter. In addition, we also clarify how to obtain a blue-tilted GWs spectrum by imposing a rapidly decreasing $c_T$ during inflation.

Oscillation in power spectrum of primordial gravitational wave as a signature of higher-order stringy corrections

In low-energy effective string theory, $α'$ corrections involve the coupling of the dilaton field to Gauss-Bonnet term. We assume that the dilaton potential is fine tuned so that the dilaton field may oscillate rapidly for a while around the minimum of its potential but the inflation background is not affected. By numerical method, we find that if the dilaton starts to oscillate at the time of about $\sim 60$ e-folds before the end of inflation, $α^\prime$ correction may bring unusual oscillations to the inflationary gravitational wave spectrum, which might be measurably imprinted in the CMB B-mode polarization.

Propagating speed of primordial gravitational waves and inflation

We show that if the propagating speed of gravitational waves (GWs) gradually diminishes during inflation, the power spectrum of primordial GWs will be strongly blue, while that of the primordial scalar perturbation may be unaffected. We also illustrate that such a scenario is actually a disformal dual to the superinflation, but it does not have the ghost instability. The blue tilt obtained is $0<n_T\lesssim 1$, which may significantly boost the stochastic GWs background at the frequency band of Advanced LIGO/Virgo, as well as the space-based detectors.

G-Bounce Inflation: Towards Nonsingular Inflation Cosmology with Galileon Field

We study a nonsingular bounce inflation model, which can drive the early universe from a contracting phase, bounce into an ordinary inflationary phase, followed by the reheating process. Besides the bounce that avoided the Big-Bang singularity which appears in the standard cosmological scenario, we make use of the Horndesky theory and design the kinetic and potential forms of the lagrangian, so that neither of the two big problems in bouncing cosmology, namely the ghost and the anisotropy problems, will appear. The cosmological perturbations can be generated either in the contracting phase or in the inflationary phase, where in the latter the power spectrum will be scale-invariant and fit the observational data, while in the former the perturbations will have nontrivial features that will be tested by the large scale structure experiments. We also fit our model to the CMB TT power spectrum.

Oscillating modulation to B-mode polarization from varying propagating speed of primordial gravitational waves

In low-energy effective string theory and modified gravity theories, the propagating speed $c_T$ of primordial gravitational waves may deviate from unity. We find that the step-like variation of $c_T$ during slow-roll inflation may result in an oscillating modulation to the B-mode polarization spectrum, which can hardly be imitated by adjusting other cosmological parameters, and the intensity of the modulation is determined by the dynamics of $c_T$. Thus provided that the foreground contribution is under control, high-precision CMB polarization observations will be able to put tight constraint on the variation of $c_T$, and so the corresponding theories.

Pre-inflationary primordial perturbations

The large-scale power deficit in the cosmic microwave background fluctuations might be relevant with the physics of pre-inflation, a bounce, or a superinflationary phase preceding slow-roll inflation, which can provide a singular-free realization of inflation. We investigate the primordial perturbations from such pre-inflationary evolutions, which generally may consist of multiple phases with different background dynamics, and give a universal formula for the power spectrum of primordial perturbations in terms of the recursive Bogoliubov coefficients. We also apply our formula to corresponding cases and show how the intensity of large-scale power suppression is affected by the pre-inflationary physics.
