StylePart: Image-based Shape Part Manipulation

Due to a lack of image-based "part controllers", shape manipulation of man-made shape images, such as resizing the backrest of a chair or replacing a cup handle is not intuitive. To tackle this problem, we present StylePart, a framework that enables direct shape manipulation of an image by leveraging generative models of both images and 3D shapes. Our key contribution is a shape-consistent latent mapping function that connects the image generative latent space and the 3D man-made shape attribute latent space. Our method "forwardly maps" the image content to its corresponding 3D shape attributes, where the shape part can be easily manipulated. The attribute codes of the manipulated 3D shape are then "backwardly mapped" to the image latent code to obtain the final manipulated image. We demonstrate our approach through various manipulation tasks, including part replacement, part resizing, and viewpoint manipulation, and evaluate its effectiveness through extensive ablation studies.

Time-dependent Corotation Resonance in Barred Galaxies

The effective potential neighboring the corotation resonance region in barred galaxies is shown to be strongly time-dependent in any rotating frame because of the competition of nearby perturbations of similar strengths with differing rotation speeds. Contrary to the generally adopted assumption, that in the bar rotating frame the corotation region should possess four stationary equilibrium points (Lagrange points), with high quality N-body simulations we localize the instantaneous equilibrium points and find that they circulate or oscillate broadly in azimuth with respect to the pattern speeds of the inner or outer perturbations. This implies that at the particle level the Jacobi integral is not well conserved around the corotation radius. That is, angular momentum exchanges decouple from energy exchanges, enhancing the chaotic diffusion of stars through the corotation region.

On the Formation of Elliptical Rings in Disk Galaxies

N-body simulations of galactic collisions are employed to investigate the formation of elliptical rings in disk galaxies. The relative inclination between disk and dwarf galaxies is studied with a fine step of five degrees. It is confirmed that the eccentricity of elliptical ring is linearly proportional to the inclination angle. Deriving from the simulational results, an analytic formula which expresses the eccentricity as a function of time and inclination angle is obtained. This formula shall be useful for the interpretations of the observations of ring systems, and therefore reveals the merging histories of galaxies.

Possible Transit Timing Variations of the TrES-3 Planetary System

Five newly observed transit light curves of the TrES-3 planetary system are presented. Together with other light curve data from literature, 23 transit light curves in total, which cover an overall timescale of 911 epochs, have been analyzed through a standard procedure. From these observational data, the system's orbital parameters are determined and possible transit timing variations are investigated. Given that a null transit-timing-variation produces a fit with reduced chi^2=1.52, our results agree with previous work, that transit timing variations might not exist in these data. However, a 1-frequency oscillating transit-timing-variation model, giving a fit with a reduced chi^2=0.93, does possess a statistically higher probability. It is, thus, concluded that future observations and dynamical simulations for this planetary system will be very important.

The Axis-Symmetric Ring Galaxies: AM 0053-353, AM 0147-350, AM 1133-245, AM 1413-243, AM 2302-322, ARP 318, and Head-On Penetrations

Axis-symmetric ring systems can be identified from the new catalog of collisional ring galaxies in Madore et al. (2009). These are O-type-like collisional ring galaxies. Head-on collisions by dwarf galaxies moving along the symmetric axis were performed through N-body simulations to address their origins. It was found that the simulations with smaller initial relative velocities between two galaxies, or the cases with heavier dwarf galaxies, could produce rings with higher density contrasts. There are more than one generation of rings in one collision and the lifetime of any generation of rings is about one dynamical time. It was concluded that head-on penetrations could explain these O-type-like ring galaxies identified from the new catalog in Madore et al. (2009), and the simulated rings resembling the observational O-type-like collisional rings are those at the early stage of one of the ring-generations.
